Control systems for indoor lighting and computer simulation: analysis and comparison between software packages capabilities and results on a real cas…
2018
In the last years, computer capabilities have evolved rapidly and also the way to simulate building physics phenomena is changed and more developed. Each simulation software is developed with a less or more similar aim, using different algorithms and models and being used by people with different profile: specialist, architects, engineers, installers, etc. This paper deals with the analysis of capability of some of the most utilised software used to predict indoor lighting, including natural daylight contribution and assessment of energy consumption and savings related to specific design options. Furthermore, two of the analysed software have been tested simulating a case studying. Results …
A Standard Siren Measurement of the Hubble Constant from GW170817 without the Electromagnetic Counterpart
2019
We perform a statistical standard siren analysis of GW170817. Our analysis does not utilize knowledge of NGC 4993 as the unique host galaxy of the optical counterpart to GW170817. Instead, we consider each galaxy within the GW170817 localization region as a potential host; combining the redshift from each galaxy with the distance estimate from GW170817 provides an estimate of the Hubble constant, $H_0$. We then combine the $H_0$ values from all the galaxies to provide a final measurement of $H_0$. We explore the dependence of our results on the thresholds by which galaxies are included in our sample, as well as the impact of weighting the galaxies by stellar mass and star-formation rate. Co…
Utility of Hovmöller diagrams to diagnose Rossby wave trains
2011
The study investigates and compares various methods that aim to diagnose Rossby wave trains with the help of Hovm¨ oller diagrams. Three groups of methods are distinguished: The first group contains trough-and-ridge Hovm¨ oller diagrams of the meridional wind; they provide full phase information, but differ in the method for latitudinal averaging or weighting. The second group aims to identify Rossby wave trains as a whole, discounting individual troughs and ridges. The third group contains diagnostics which focus on physical mechanisms during the different phases of a Rossby wave train life cycle; they include the analysis of eddy kinetic energy and methods for quantifying Rossby wave brea…
Carbon Stocks in Peri-Urban Areas: A Case Study of Remote Sensing Capabilities
2014
Peri-urban areas are the extension of cities into contiguous areas, where households and farms coexist. Carbon stocks (CSs) assessment, a concept here extended to urban features, has not yet been studied in depth over peri-urban areas due to uncertainties in such CSs quantification, level of detail required about construction materials, and the high spatial variability of those stocks. Remote sensing (RS)-based techniques have been successfully utilized in urban areas for assessing phenomena such as soil sealing, sprawl patterns, and dynamics of surface imperviousness, especially focusing on land cover classification at high to medium spatial scales. Over the floodplain study area of Emilia…
Assessing the electricity consumption of outdoor lighting systems in the presence of automatic control: The OL-BAC factors method
2020
Abstract Building automation systems are able to influence significantly buildings’ energy performance. The BAC factors method, presented for the first time by the International Standard EN 15232, is the most used and simple instrument for evaluating the impact of such systems in terms of reduction of the electrical and thermal energy consumption of buildings services. Nevertheless, Standard EN 15232 does not take into consideration the automation of lighting systems serving buildings’ external areas like passages, gardens, entrance walkways, etc. In some cases, such areas can be very extended and, as a consequence, responsible for a not negligible percentage of the overall electricity cons…
Mitigating the Climate Change Impacts of Aviation through Behavioural Change
2020
Aviation plays a crucial role for economic development and social welfare, but at the same time it also significantly contributes to climate change. Therefore, if the industry wants to follow the same growth path as it has in the past, it will need to mitigate its environmental impacts more seriously or it may otherwise face regulatory restrictions. The current literature has discussed five mitigation strategies. These are technological changes, market-based changes, operational changes, regulatory changes and behavioural changes. While several authors have regarded behavioural changes as the measure with the greatest mitigation potential, it is also the measure that has received far less a…

Communication strategies used by 'British Petroleum (BP)' to deal with legitimacy before and after the Deepwater Horizon Accident
2016
Oil spills pose serious threats to the legitimacy of the companies involved and the oil industry in general. The objective of this study is to conduct research on the communication strategies used by ‘British Petroleum’ (BP) to maintain its legitimacy before the Deepwater Horizon (DH) oil spill caused in April 2010 and to repair its legitimacy after the DH accident. There is existing literature on the legitimacy theory and the communication strategies as well as DH accident and its causes. A qualitative study based on the sustainability reports of BP from 2006 to 2015 and its press releases in relation to the DH accident from April 2010 to April 2016 is conducted to discover its preferred c…
Dialogues on Bakhtin : interdisciplinary readings
1998
The ideas of Mikhail Bakhtin have received a great amount of scholarly interest both in his homeland and in the West, giving rise to a special discipline devoted to the study of the legacy of the Bakhtin Circle. Despite the huge amount of material published on Bakhtin, the appropriation of Bakhtin’s ideas has remained a rather controversial issue, and thus, there are competing views, especially between Russian and Western scholars, on what Bakhtin’s project was. Furthermore, the relevance of Bakhtin is not limited to ’Bakhtinology proper’, nor to literary criticism, cultural studies, and philosophy, which are traditionally considered Bakhtin’s home ground. It has become trendy to apply Bakh…
