Coronal Loops: Observations and Modeling of Confined Plasma
2010
Coronal loops are the building blocks of the X-ray bright solar corona. They owe their brightness to the dense confined plasma, and this review focuses on loops mostly as structures confining plasma. After a brief historical overview, the review is divided into two separate but not independent sections: the first illustrates the observational framework, the second reviews the theoretical knowledge. Quiescent loops and their confined plasma are considered, and therefore topics such as loop oscillations and flaring loops (except for non-solar ones which provide information on stellar loops) are not specifically addressed here. The observational section discusses loop classification and popula…
Land Surface Temperature From the Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer: Validation Over Inland Waters and Vegetated Surfaces
2009
The land surface temperature (LST) product of the Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) was validated with ground measurements at the following two thermally homogeneous sites: Lake Tahoe, CA/NV, USA, and a large rice field close to Valencia, Spain. The AATSR LST product is based on the split-window technique using the 11- and 12- mum channels. The algorithm coefficients are provided for 13 different land-cover classes plus one lake class (index i). Coefficients are weighted by the vegetation-cover fraction (f). In the operational implementation of the algorithm, i and f are assigned from a global classification and monthly fractional vegetation-cover maps with spatial resolution…
Determination of sea surface temperature using combined TOVS and AVHRR data. Application to the Canary Islands area, Spain
1996
Abstract The determination of sea surface temperature from satellite is performed by means of multi-channel algorithms with channels 4 and 5 of AVHRRNOAA or using radiative transfer models and radiosounding profiles of air temperature and humidity. In this work, an alternative to the current algorithms has been established. A new method combining the information supplied by sensors of TOVS and AVHRR systems onboard NOAA satellites is proposed. It is based on the split-window technique, the coefficients A and B being determined as a function of the water vapour content, which is calculated using the TOVS sensors. The T4 and T5 temperatures are supplied by the AVHRR system. Then, combining bo…
Android tool to evaluate grounding resistance
2015
In the absence of sources of rapidly varying field, the study of the potential distribution determined, in a linear medium, by a geometrically complex grounding may be conducted by applying the method of superposition of the effects, known as method of subareas of Maxwell. Such approach can be usefully employed in an educational tool intended for students of electrical engineering.
Guidelines and Conceptual Design of the Grounding System of the DTT Experimental Facility
2022
The Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) is an experimental nuclear fusion reactor currently under construction at the ENEA research center in Frascati and whose first plasma is expected in 2025. The present article shows the conceptual philosophy and the guidelines behind the design of the grounding system of the DTT. The article focuses on the main target of the grounding system and on the main technical standards to refer to for the design.
Transient behaviour of a “mixed” overhead-cable EHV line under lightning events
2009
Recently, in many countries have been undergone or are planning links with AC extra-high voltage (EHV) underground cables. Cable lines offer the possibility of a reduced environment impact and for this reason they are often the only alternative for the reinforcement or the expansion of power system accepted by public opinion. The coexistence of overhead and cable line in the so called ¿mixed¿ lines, however, raises several questions regarding their behaviour both in steady state and in transient. The purpose of this work is to investigate the transient behaviour of a mixed overhead-cable EHV line under lightning events, describing the effects of the following overvoltages on the system. The…
Homomorphic Approach to RF-Inhomogeneity Removal Based on Gabor Filter
2007
In this paper a bias correction algorithm for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is presented. The magnetic resonance (MR) images affected by this artifact, also called RF-inhomogeneity, exhibit irregular spatial brightness variations caused by magnetic field inhomogeneity. Here we present an original algorithm based on E2D - HUM, already proposed by some of the authors, where a modified Gabor filter is introduced in the elaboration chain to provide directional capabilities to suppress the artifact. The process of restoration doesn't care about the structure of the image and it has been applied to MR images of different parts of body like knee, abdomen, pelvis and brain. A comparison with oth…
On some parameters related to weak noncompactness in L1(μ,E)
2009
A weak measure of noncompactness γU is defined in a Banach space in terms of convex compactness. We obtain relationships between the measure γU(A) of a bounded set A in the Bochner space L1(μ,E) and two parameters Π(A) and Λ1(A).
On some parameters related to weak noncompactness in L1(μ,E)
2009
A measure of weak noncompactness γU is defined in a Banach space X in terms of convex compactness. We obtain relationships between the measure γU(A) of a bounded set A in the Bochner space L1(μ,E) and two parameters Π(A) and Λ1(A) related, respectively, to uniform integrability and weak-tightness. The criterion for relative weak compactness in L1(μ,E) is recovered.
Graphical Schemes Designed to Display and Study the Long-term Variations of Schumann Resonance
2019
This work proposes and illustrates a graphical approach aimed at studying a wide range of features of the ELF horizontal magnetic field signal recorded at the Sierra Nevada station (Spain). In addition to the traditional long-term variations in the parameters of the first three Schumann resonances (their amplitudes, central frequencies and widths), many other properties such as the saturations of the magnetometers, anomalous values for the parameters or spectra with any kind of particularities are taken into consideration in this work. These features can provide us with complementary information about the long-term variation of Schumann resonances, give an estimation of the extent up to whi…
