Growth vs. level effect of population change on economic development: An inspection into human-capital-related mechanisms

We analyze the role of demographic changes in the economic development process by studying the transitional and the long-run impact of both the rate of population growth and the initial population size on the levels of per capita human capital and income. Estimating the long-term economic impacts of Spanish universities on the national economy

In contrast to previous studies on the economic impact of universities that focus on the demand side, this study centres on universities' effects on the supply side of the economy. Through a case study of the Spanish University System, this paper proposes a methodology based on counterfactual scenarios and growth accounting to estimate the long-term impacts of universities on their regional economies. Our study evaluates the stylized impacts of universities' activities on human capital, salaries and occupation of the working age population, on generation of technological capital and, finally, on the GDP growth of the Spanish economy in the period 1989–2010.

Abstract In this article we show how the use of more reliable data on average years of schooling can change the conclusions about the magnitude of international R&D spillovers based on previous evidence, while pointing to a superior role of human capital.
Technology spillover and TFP growth: A spatial Durbin model

Beginning with a model in which technological progress is reflected by product variety, we provide a structural approach to estimate technology spillovers allowing for spatial interdependencies. To this end, we first present a theoretical model of TFP growth by decomposing TFP into quality and variety components. We address the quality component by introducing a country׳s distance to the technological frontier. Quality is assumed to be a negative function of the technological gap of country i with respect to its own technological frontier. Screen media usage, sleep time and academic performance in adolescents: clustering a self-organizing maps analysis.

Screen media usage, sleep time and socio-demographic features are related to adolescents' academic performance, but interrelations are little explored. This paper describes these interrelations and behavioral profiles clustered in low and high academic performance. A nationally representative sample of 3,095 Spanish adolescents, aged 12 to 18, was surveyed on 15 variables linked to the purpose of the study. A Self-Organizing Maps analysis established non-linear interrelationships among these variables and identified behavior patterns in subsequent cluster analyses. Besides enrichment at personal level entailed by the increase in the cognitive and intellectual levels of the person associated with education, a large number of studies have verified the greater the human capital of a person, the greater is his employability, his participation in the labour market, his functional and geographical mobility and, thereby, his productivity. Business legacy planning for mega events: The case of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

Abstract This study aimed to explore the processes of business networking which lays the foundation for business legacy outcomes initiated by the award of a mega event in a region. Building on the work of Spilling ( 1996 ) on mega event business impacts, we interviewed 24 stakeholders in Qatar from sport organizations about business planning and impacts of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Abstract This article presents an empirical analysis of determinants of the survival of firm or self-employed workers in the Spanish translation sector. In the midst of a global downturn, the survival of firm and self-employed workers is a key factor for the progress of the economy and for a better and more stable future. The analysis explores the combination of variables including human capital, contingency and economic investment that potentially drive translation and interpreting firms to survive.
