Traumatic atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation after surgical correction of prominent ears: Case report and review of the literature

2019

International audience; Corrective surgery of prominent ears may be justified for social or aesthetic reasons during childhood or adulthood. Post-operative complications occur in approximately 0 to 8.4% of cases. This case describes a rare atlanto-axoid rotatory subluxation after bilateral surgical correction of prominent ears under general anesthesia. Orthopedic treatment was done after two months of medical roaming outside of our center. The one-year post-operative clinic consultation and radiological exam were normal. Only the psychological impact of the episode remained. Traumatic atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation is a rare complication but should be considered after post-operative tor…

Benefits of Direct Colposcopic Vision for Optimal LLETZ Procedure: A Prospective Multicenter Study.

2015

International audience; Objective The aim of the study was to assess whether direct colposcopic ă vision (DCV) of the cervix during large loop excision of the ă transformation zone (LLETZ) is associated with a decrease in the volume ă and dimensions of specimens or affects margin status at histology. ă Materials and Methods A prospective multicenter observational study of ă 216 women who underwent LLETZ for grades 2 and 3 cervical ă intraepithelial neoplasia was conducted. The volume and dimensions ă (circumference, length, and thickness) of the surgical specimens were ă measured before fixation. Data were compared according to the use of ă colposcopy during LLETZ. The following 3 groups we…

Effective Management of Severe Asthma with Biologic Medications in Adult Patients: A Literature Review and International Expert Opinion

2021

International audience; Severe asthma often remains uncontrolled despite effective treatments and evidence-based guidelines. A group of global experts in asthma and biologic medications from nine countries considered the most relevant clinical variables to manage severe asthma in adult patients and guide treatment choice. The resulting recommendations address the investigation of biomarker levels (blood eosinophil count along with fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide [FeNO]), clinical features (oral corticosteroid [OCS] dependency, specific comorbid disease entities associated with severe type 2 asthma), and safety considerations. Current evidence suggests that biomarkers, inclu…

Patient‐reported outcomes in adults with type 1 diabetes in global real‐world clinical practice: the SAGE study

2021

International audience; Aims: This secondary analysis of the SAGE study aimed to evaluate the association between glycaemic control and patient-reported outcomes (PROs), in adults with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) across different age groups and regions.Materials and methods: SAGE was a multinational, cross-sectional, observational study in adults with T1DM. Data were collected at a single visit, analysed according to predefined age groups (26-44, 45-64, and ≥65 years), and reported across different regions. PRO questionnaires were applied to assess hypoglycaemia fear (Hypoglycemia Fear Survey-II [HFS-II]), diabetes-related distress (Problem Areas In Diabetes [PAID]), insulin treatment satisfacti…

Concentrations, optical properties and sources of humic-like substances (HULIS) in fine particulate matter in Xi'an, Northwest China

2021

Humic-like substances (HULIS) are ubiquitous in the atmospheric environment, which affects both human health and climate. We present here the mass concentration and optical characteristics of HULIS isolated from aerosol samples collected in Xi'an, China. Both mass concentration and absorption coefficient (Abs365) of HULIS show clear seasonal differences, with the highest average in winter (3.91 μgC m-3 and 4.78 M m-1, respectively) and the lowest in summer (0.65 μgC m-3 and 0.55 M m-1, respectively). The sources of HULIS_C and light absorption of HULIS were analyzed by positive matrix factorization (PMF) and four major sources were resolved, including secondary formation, biomass burning, c…

Atrial Fibrillation Is Associated with a Marker of Endothelial Function and Oxidative Stress in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction

2015

International audience; Background Atrial fibrillation (AF), whether silent or symptomatic, is a frequent and severe complication of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous eNOS inhibitor, is a risk factor for endothelial dysfunction. We addressed the relationship between ADMA plasma levels and AF occurrence in AMI.Methods 273 patients hospitalized for AMI were included. Continuous electrocardiographic monitoring (CEM) !48 hours was recorded and ADMA was measured by High Performance Liquid Chromatography on admission blood sample. Results The incidence of silent and symptomatic AF was 39(14%) and 29 (11%), respectively. AF patients were markedly o…

Red Orange: Experimental Models and Epidemiological Evidence of Its Benefits on Human Health

2013

In recent years, there has been increasing public interest in plant antioxidants, thanks to the potential anticarcinogenic and cardioprotective actions mediated by their biochemical properties. The red (or blood) orange (Citrus sinensis(L.) Osbeck) is a pigmented sweet orange variety typical of eastern Sicily (southern Italy), California, and Spain. In this paper, we discuss the main health-related properties of the red orange that include anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and cardiovascular protection activities. Moreover, the effects on health of its main constituents (namely, flavonoids, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, hydroxycinnamic acids, and anthocyanins) are described. The red orange juice…

Anti-Aging Effects of GDF11 on Skin

2020

International audience; Human skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. The epidermis has four major cell layers made up of keratinocytes in varying stages of progressive differentiation. Skin aging is a multi-factorial process that affects every phase of its biology and function. The expression profiles of inflammation-related genes analyzed in resident immune cells demonstrated that these cells have a strong ability to regenerate adult skin stem cells and to produce endogenous substances such as growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF11). GDF11 appears to be the key to progenitor proliferation and/or differentiation. The preservation of youthful phenot…

Macular pigment change during eye ageing : analysis from population based study, Montrachet study

2018

Given the limits of the literature on the environmental nutritional impact in ocular aging witch is partially due to the lack of data in general population notably in French elderly, first, we were interested in the relationships of diet, plasma xanthophylls and macular pigment optical density as well as its spatial distribution and second of plasma fatty acids and dry eye disease signs in the 1153 Montrachet study participants.Firstly, we reported the high consumption of squash, the high plasma lutein and zeaxanthin levels and also the high plasma lutein level, the high macular pigment optical density level in nonsmokers subjects. In addition, the macular pigment values we provided in the …
