Ighv Mutational Status By Deep Next Generation Sequencing Refines Ighv Sanger Sequencing Classification in Patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia

2019

Introduction: Determination of the mutational status of rearranged immunoglobulin heavy chain variable (IgHV) genes in patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL), is considered one of the most important prognostic factors: patients with unmutated IgHV (UM; ≥98% of identity to the germline) genes have a more aggressive disease course and develop more frequently unfavourable genetic deletions or mutations than patients with mutated IgHV (M; ≤98%). Mutational status, is currently determined by Sanger sequencing (Sseq) that allows the analysis of the major clone, however, international guidelines recommend caution in assigning mutational status in cases with "Borderline" IgHV identity (9…

Hydrogeological and geotechnical modeling of the foundation soils of Maredolce Lake in Palermo, aided by geophysical surveys

2019

The cultural heritage of Maredolce (Palermo) includes an Arab-Norman castle that originally stood on the shores of an artificial lake carved out of a basin dug out of the calcarenite and filled with water thanks to the channeling of the springs of San Ciro upstream. Subsequently, the lowering of the water table and the high hydraulic permeability of the outcropping rocks caused the lake to dry up. Recently, a project of enhancement of the cultural heritage required the restoration of the lake. The geophysical study presented here, including the integrated use of different techniques such as electrical and seismic tomography, Multichannel Analysis of the Surface Waves and ambient vibration r…

The integration of surface and subsurface stratigraphic data with HVSR measures for studies of seismic microzonation: the case of Oliveri (ME)

2013

Because of its high seismic hazard the urban area of Oliveri has been subject of a study on seismic microzonation at first level (OPCM 3907/2010). The urban area develops on a large coastal plain made of Late Pleistocene and Holocene mixed fluvial/marine sediments, that mainly consist of silty sands and gravels. The eastern part of this plain is dominated by the alluvial deposits of the Elicona torrent. The coastal and alluvial sediments overlap a complexly deformed substrate made of Hercynian metamorphites (Aspromonte unit), the Capo d’Orlando Flysch, the Antisicilide Argille Scagliose and Pleistocene clays and calcarenites. This area is affected by high uplift rates as recently estimated …

Participants’ home as an interview context when studying sensitive family issues

2013

This article considers the meaning of the participants’ home as an interview context when studying sensitive family issues. The article is based on two qualitative family studies by the authors on foster children’s perspectives on their home and their family relations and client families’ experiences of preventive family support. Both studies address sensitive family issues, in particular Finnish child welfare. The first author’s interview data consist of interviews with foster children, social network maps and diaries and the second author’s data of interviews with six client families. Most of the interviews were conducted at the participants’ homes, but in the second author's study two in…

Searches for rare or forbidden semileptonic charm decays

2011

We present searches for rare or forbidden charm decays of the form $X_c^+\to h^\pm\ell^\mp\ell^{(\prime)+}$, where $X_c^+$ is a charm hadron ($D^+$, $D^+_s$, or $\Lambda_c^+$), $h^\pm$ is a pion, kaon, or proton, and $\ell^{(\prime)\pm}$ is an electron or muon. The analysis is based on $384 fb^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at or close to the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the BaBar detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. No significant signal is observed for any of the 35 decay modes that are investigated. We establish 90% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fractions between $1 \times 10^{-6}$ and $44 \times 10^{-6}$ depending on the channel. In most…

Geological modeling of Altavilla Milicia (Sicily) using HVSR data

2014

At today the use of inversion of HVSR curves is mainly limited to derive average parameters of the shear wave velocity, although recently they have been used also for a detailed reconstruction of the roof of the seismic bedrock (Di Stefano et al. 2014). Since ambient vibrations may contain waves travelling in all directions, as body waves and Rayleigh and Love waves, a limit of this method lies in the uncertain composition of seismic noise, in the lack of knowledge about the microseismic field and in the subjective choices regarding the data processing. This work aims to verify the potential and limits of the HVSR inversion for the purposes of geological reconstruction of the subsoil in hea…

Cluster analysis of HVSR peak datasets to detect geological structures

2014

A modified centroid-based algorithm has been applied to HVSR (Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio) datasets (Nakamura, 2000) acquired for studies of seismic microzoning in various urban centers of Sicilian towns also aimed to obtain detailed reconstruction of the roof of the seismic bedrock (Di Stefano et al. 2014). HVSR data were previously properly processed to extract frequency and amplitude of peaks by a code based on clustering of HVSR curves determined in sliding time windows. In centroid-based clustering, clusters are represented by a central vector, which may not necessarily be a member of the data set. After fixing the number of clusters, the algorithm find the cluster centers an…

Modelling Indoor Radiative Heath Exchanges for Effective People Thermal Comfort and HVAC Design.

2017

Radiative heat exchanges inside buildings are responsible of a relevant part of the thermal balance of people occupying such confined spaces and, in turn, of their thermal comfort sensations. Mean radiant temperature of the internal surfaces is supposed to affect considerably this balance but, usually, it is computed by means of too simplified relationships that significantly affect the comfort evaluations. These simplified approaches can be also accountable of a less effective design of HVAC systems. Unfortunately, an accurate evaluation of the mean radiant temperature, especially when high intensity sources are present in a given internal space, depends on the angle factors between human …

Monitoring and energy performance assessment of an advanced DEC HVAC system in Morocco

2017

This work addresses the energy performance of a solar Desiccant and Evaporative Cooling (DEC) system working with the freescoo technology. Freescoo is an innovative solar air conditioning concept for ventilation, cooling, dehumidification and heating of buildings in residential and tertiary sectors. The monitoring of the system started in November 2016 and will continue until the end of 2017. Energy performances are evaluated according to the monitoring procedure for solar cooling systems developed by the Task 38 and 48 of the International Energy Agency experts. The analysis based on monitoring data shows that, for typical operating conditions in cooling mode, the electricity saving in com…
