Climate change impact on SWAT simulated streamflow in western Kenya
2009
12 pages (3/4 p.); International audience; Weather and climate extremes such as droughts and floods have far reaching impacts in Kenya. They have had implications in a variety of sectors including agriculture, water resources, health, energy, and disaster management among others. Lake Victoria and its catchment support millions of people and any impact on its ability to support the livelihoods of the communities in this region is of major concern. Thus, the main objective of this study was to assess the potential future climatic changes on the Nzoia catchment in the Lake Victoria basin, and how they might affect streamflow. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool was used to investigate the impa…

Speleothem records decadal to multidecadal hydroclimate variations in southwestern Morocco during the last millennium
2017
Abstract This study presents the first well-dated high resolution stable isotope ( δ 18 O and δ 13 C ) and trace element (Mg and Sr) speleothem records from southwestern Morocco covering the last 1000 yrs. Our records reveal substantial decadal to multidecadal swings between dry and humid periods, consistent with regional paleorecords with prevailing dry conditions during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA), wetter conditions during the second part of the Little Ice Age (LIA), and a trend towards dry conditions during the current warm period. These coherent regional climate signals suggest common climate controls. Statistical analyses indicate that the climate of southwestern Morocco remaine…
THE PROBLEM OF MISSING DATA IN HYDROCLIMATIC TIME SERIES. APPLICATION OF SPATIAL INTERPOLATION TECHNIQUES TO CONSTRUCT A COMPREHENSIVE ARCHIVE OF HYD…
2011
Planning, management and e ective control of water resource systems, require a considerable amount of hydrological data variables such as rainfall, temperature, stream- ow, etc.. Such data are required when a hydrological model has to be developed, as well. Very often hydrological data sequences at a given gauge have gaps or are incomplete, or are not characterized by a good quality or are not su ciently length. This can severely a ect, for example, the reliability of the design of a hydropower plant, the construction of dams, etc. Furthermore, the problem of missing values is a common obstacle in time series analysis and speci cally in the context of rainfall, temperature and rainfall runo…
Influence of the Madden-Julian Oscillation on Southern African summer rainfall
2007
Rain-causing mechanisms over Southern Africa (south of 15˚S) involve both tropical and temperate dynamics. Most studies focused on the synoptical timescale, while the intraseasonal (20-120 days) variability has more been neglected to date. This study aims at determining whether the dominant mode of intraseasonal variability in the Tropics, namely the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), has a significant impact on Southern African rainfall and associated atmospheric dynamics. The examination of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) over Southern Africa shows indeed significant intraseasonal fluctuations at the 30-60 day timescale, i.e. in the pe- riods that are typically reminiscent of the MJO. In ord…
