Iron Bioavailability in Fortified Fruit Beverages Using Ferritin Synthesis by Caco-2 Cells

The bioavailability of iron from fortified fruit beverages was estimated by an in vitro system including enzymatic digestion, iron uptake by Caco-2 cells, and ferritin formation determined via an enzyme immunoassay (ELISA). Thus, the aim of the present study was to assess iron bioavailability as influenced by the presence of known dietary promoter and inhibitory factors in fortified fruit beverages containing iron and/or zinc and/or skimmed milk. No negative effect (p > 0.05) derived from micronutrient interaction can be ascribed to zinc supplementation on iron availability. Transfers of small analytes in a multiphasic stirred fruit yoghurt model

International audience; The transfer of small analytes in a multiphasic stirred fruit yoghurt model, made of a pectin gel aimed to mimic fruit pieces and of a dairy gel done with milk acidified by glucono-δ-lactone hydrolysis, have been studied. The concentration gradients between the pectin gel and the dairy gel were the driving force for the migration of small analytes (i.e. water, protons and colorants). Water migrated from the dairy to the pectin gel, causing modifications in the water content of both gels and an equilibration of their water activity at 0.938±0.003. Functional investigation and applications of the acetylesterase activity of the Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck peel

The hydrolysis of acetyl moieties on a set of commercially relevant substrates was performed by employing the whole tissue of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck peel as an efficient biocatalyst in mild reaction conditions with high degree of regioselectivity. The reaction is done in aqueous media and the product is easily recovered. Optimal reaction conditions were deduced and two practical applications were investigated: the elaboration of acetylglicerols and the preparation of vitamin K1 precursor. Peel waste (flavedo and albedo) from orange juice manufacturing was successfully employed as a biocatalyst.

Mesoporous silica microparticles gated with a bulky azo derivative for the controlled release of dyes/drugs in colon.

[EN] Mesoporous silica microparticles were prepared, loaded with the dye safranin O (M-Saf) or with the drug budesonide (M-Bud) and capped by the grafting of a bulky azo derivative. Cargo release from M-Saf at different pH values (mimicking those found in the gastrointestinal tract) in the absence or presence of sodium dithionite (a reducing agent mimicking azoreductase enzyme present in the colon) was tested. Negligible safranin O release was observed at pH 6.8 and 4.5, whereas a moderate delivery at pH 1.2 was noted and attributed to the hydrolysis of the urea bond that linked the azo derivative onto the external surface of the inorganic scaffold. Glycosidic aroma compounds of some Portuguese grape cultivars

In order to evaluate the potential aroma of some Portuguese grapes, several glycosidically bound aroma compounds of ten grape varieties grown in Evora, Alentejo, Portugal, were released, identified and quantified using gas chromatography–mass spectrophotometry. White varieties were Arinto, Perrum, Rabo-de-Ovelha, Roupeiro and Antao Vaz. Red varieties were Trincadeira, Aragonez, Tinta Caiada, Moreto and Castelao. In this literature review, the integration of both acidic and alkaline pretreatment phases of hardwood and softwood chips with chemical pulping is discussed. Activated carbon from hydrolysis lignin: Effect of activation method on carbon properties

This study presents the effects of different activation methods to produce activated carbon from the hydrolysis lignin. Pretreatment of the feedstock with common mineral acids (HCL, HNO3, and H3PO4), different steam rates for physical activation, and different chemical activating agents (ZnCl2, Na2CO3, and KOH) for chemical activation were investigated. The pretreated biomass was carbonized and activated in one-stage process and the surface characteristics, such as total pore volume, pore size distribution and specific surface area, were investigated. Lignin-based activated carbon-supported metal oxide catalysts in lactic acid production from glucose

Abstract In this study, heterogeneous biomass-based activated carbon-supported metal oxide catalysts were prepared and tested for lactic acid production from glucose in aqueous solution. Activated carbons were produced from hydrolysis lignin by chemical (ZnCl2) or steam activation and modified with a nitric acid treatment and Sn, Al, and Cr chlorides to obtain carbon-based metal oxide catalysts. The modification of the carbon support by nitric acid treatment together with Sn and Al oxides led to an increase in lactic acid yield.
