Complete hyperfine Paschen-Back regime at relatively small magnetic fields realized in potassium nano-cell
2015
A one-dimensional nano-metric-thin cell (NC) filled with potassium metal has been built and used to study optical atomic transitions in external magnetic fields. These studies benefit from the remarkable features of the NC allowing one to use $\lambda/2$- and $\lambda$-methods for effective investigations of individual transitions of the K D_1 line. The methods are based on strong narrowing of the absorption spectrum of the atomic column of thickness L equal to $\lambda/2$ and to $\lambda$(with $\lambda = 770\un{nm}$ being the resonant laser radiation wavelength). In particular, for a $\pi$-polarized radiation excitation the $\lambda$-method allows us to resolve eight atomic transitions (in…
Potentials for modeling cold collisions between Na (3S) and Rb (5S) atoms
2005
The experimental characterization of the electronic states correlated to the asymptote of ground state Na (3S) and Rb (5S) atoms was expanded by spectroscopic data on $a\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{3}\ensuremath{\Sigma}^{+}$ state levels using a high resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy technique. The hyperfine splitting of the $a\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{3}\ensuremath{\Sigma}^{+}$ state levels was partially resolved and analyzed for both $\mathrm{Na}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ and $\mathrm{Na}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ isotopomers. Transitions to high lying levels of the $a\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{3}\ensuremath{\Sigma}^{+}$ and $X\phantom{\rul…
Angular momentum alignment-to-orientation conversion in the ground state of Rb atoms at room temperature
2020
We investigated experimentally and theoretically angular momentum alignment-to-orientation conversion created by the joint interaction of laser radiation and an external magnetic field with atomic rubidium at room temperature. In particular we were interested in alignment-to-orientation conversion in atomic ground state. Experimentally the laser frequency was fixed to the hyperfine transitions of $D_1$ line of rubidium. We used a theoretical model for signal simulations that takes into account all neighboring hyperfine levels, the mixing of magnetic sublevels in an external magnetic field, the coherence properties of the exciting laser radiation, and the Doppler effect. The experiments were…
Nonlinear magneto-optical resonances atD1excitation ofRb85andRb87in an extremely thin cell
2010
Nonlinear magneto-optical resonances have been measured in an extremely thin cell (ETC) for the ${D}_{1}$ transition of rubidium in an atomic vapor of natural isotopic composition. All hyperfine transitions of both isotopes have been studied for a wide range of laser power densities, laser detunings, and ETC wall separations. Dark resonances in the laser induced fluorescence (LIF) were observed as expected when the ground-state total angular momentum ${F}_{g}$ was greater than or equal to the excited-state total angular momentum ${F}_{e}$. Unlike the case of ordinary cells, the width and contrast of dark resonances formed in the ETC dramatically depended on the detuning of the laser from th…
Atomic physics of positronium with intense slow positron beams
2002
Abstract The theory of quantum electrodynamics has presented a complete calculation of the energy levels of positronium (Ps, e + e − ) up to the order R ∞ α 4 . The annihilation rates for para -Ps (1 1 S 0 ) and ortho -Ps (1 1 S 1 ) are completely known up to the order R ∞ α 5 and R ∞ α 6 , respectively. The present experimental uncertainty for spectroscopic results is 5–100 times larger than the theoretical uncertainty. For the annihilation rates the experimental situation is even worse. The theoretical predictions have presently reached a level of precision which is a challenge to experimentalists! The experimental uncertainty for the fine- and hyperfine transitions in the Ps atom is dete…
New determination of the electron's mass.
2001
A new independent value for the electron's mass in units of the atomic mass unit is presented, ${m}_{e}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.0005485799092(4)\mathrm{u}$. The value is obtained from our recent measurement of the $g$ factor of the electron in ${}^{12}{\mathrm{C}}^{5+}$ in combination with the most recent quantum electrodynamical (QED) predictions. In the QED corrections, terms of order ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}^{2}$ were included by a perturbation expansion in $Z\ensuremath{\alpha}$. Our total precision is three times better than that of the accepted value for the electron's mass.
HYPERFINE STRUCTURE CONSTANTS OF ENERGETICALLY HIGH-LYING LEVELS OF ODD PARITY OF ATOMIC VANADIUM
2014
High-resolution Fourier transform spectra of a vanadium-argon plasma have been recorded in the wavelength range of 365-670 nm (15,000-27,400 cm–1). Optical bandpass filters were used in the experimental setup to enhance the sensitivity of the Fourier transform spectrometer. In total, 138 atomic vanadium spectral lines showing resolved or partially resolved hyperfine structure have been analyzed to determine the magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants A of the involved energy levels. One of the investigated lines has not been previously classified. As a result, the magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants A for 90 energy levels are presented: 35 of them belong to the configuration…
Singlet and triplet potentials of the ground-state atom pair Rb+Cs studied by Fourier-transform spectroscopy
2011
A comprehensive study of the $X {}^{1}\ensuremath{\Sigma}{}^{+}$ and $a {}^{3}\ensuremath{\Sigma}{}^{+}$ electronic states of the Rb and Cs atom pair in RbCs is presented. Abundant spectroscopic data for the $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$$^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ and $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$$^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ isotopologues were obtained from Fourier-transform spectra of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) from the $B {}^{1}\ensuremath{\Pi}$ and $(4){}^{1}\ensuremath{\Sigma}{}^{+}$ states to the $a {}^{3}\ensuremath{\Sigma}{}^{+}$ (4549 transitions) and $X {}^{1}\ensuremath{\Sigma}{}^{+}$ (15 709 transitions) states. The $X {}^{1}\ensuremath{\Sigma}{}^{+}$ state data were complemented by about 15 500 transitions obta…
Constraints on Exotic Spin-Dependent Interactions Between Matter and Antimatter from Antiprotonic Helium Spectroscopy.
2018
Heretofore undiscovered spin-0 or spin-1 bosons can mediate exotic spin-dependent interactions between standard-model particles. Here we carry out the first search for semileptonic spin-dependent interactions between matter and antimatter. We compare theoretical calculations and spectroscopic measurements of the hyperfine structure of antiprotonic helium to constrain exotic spin- and velocity-dependent interactions between electrons and antiprotons.
Light-induced polarization effects in atoms with partially resolved hyperfine structure and applications to absorption, fluorescence, and nonlinear m…
2009
The creation and detection of atomic polarization is examined theoretically, through the study of basic optical-pumping mechanisms and absorption and fluorescence measurements, and the dependence of these processes on the size of ground- and excited-state hyperfine splittings is determined. The consequences of this dependence are studied in more detail for the case of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in the Faraday geometry (an effect requiring the creation and detection of rank-two polarization in the ground state) with alkali atoms. Analytic formulas for the optical rotation signal under various experimental conditions are presented.
