Activity and body orientation of Gallotia galloti in different habitats and daily times
2011
Abstract In lizards, site selection is related to the acquisition of resources such as refuges, mates or prey, but also to the exploitation of sites suitable for thermoregulation. The latter process may be affected by lizard posture and body axis orientation in relation to the sun as a way to optimize heat exchange throughout the day. Specific postures and body orientations could also contribute to more efficient signal transmission in social contexts. In this paper we analyze activity and body axis orientation of adult males and females of the lacertid Gallotia galloti in two localities of Tenerife with different structural habitats. We performed transects at both sampling localities in t…
Thresholds in selection of breeding habitat by the Eurasian treecreeper (Certhia familiaris)
2005
Abstract Assessment of habitat thresholds is a topical issue in ecology, both from theoretical and applied perspectives. We examined how forest structure influences selection of breeding habitat in the Eurasian treecreeper (Certhia familiaris). It is an old-growth forest passerine, which can be considered an umbrella species. Habitat selection data, covering five breeding seasons, were collected from a study area across three spatial scales: (a) territory core scale (a radius of 30 m), (b) territory scale (a radius of 200 m) and (c) large scale (a radius of 500 m). Logistic regression analyses revealed that the radii of 30 and 200 m from the nest were the most important spatial scales for t…
Representatives of the Magnoliaceae juss. family growing upon different climatic conditions from the botanical gardens collections of Taras Shevchenk…
2016
Has been described the phenology of deciduous magnolias growing ex situ in botanical gardens of Acad. O.V Fomin SRC "Institute of Biology" National Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv and the University and Latvia (Riga). 9 species, 1 variety and 3 hybrids identical for both collections of botanical gardens were selected and used for phenological observations. The studied plants were resistant to winter and summer climatic factors, were marked the parameters that determine their plasticity in less precipitation in Ukraine and Latvia, as compared to the places of their natural habitat, and expanding the use of exotic species in landscaping design of the megapolises.
Pollination biology in an endangered rocky mountain toadflax (Linaria cavanillesii)
2013
Knowledge about the reproductive system of species inhabiting rocky habitats is scarce. The reproductive biology (floral biology, experimental pollination, insect visits, inbreeding depression, and seed predation) of the rupicolous Linaria cavanillesii was analyzed under field and experimental conditions. Self-compatibility was revealed by the high fruit set, seed set, and seed mass in the pollination experiment. Furthermore, results disclose that this species does not need insect visitors for seed production since fruit set after autonomous self-pollination was similar to that by hand cross-pollination. Self-offsprings were not affected by a strong degree of inbreeding depression in early …
Relationships between economic profitability and habitat quality of Siberian jay in uneven-aged Norway spruce forest
2012
Abstract In the southern and central parts of Finland, Siberian jay (Perisoreus infaustus) lives in large non-fragmented spruce-dominated forests. Due to the reduction of such forests, Siberian jay has disappeared from the southern parts of Finland. This study analyzed continuous-cover uneven-aged forest management as a way to maintain Siberian jay habitats simultaneously with timber production. Continuous cover management is able to provide the necessary spatial and temporal continuity of forest features important to the viability of Siberian jay populations. The study analyzed the relationship between habitat quality of Siberian jay and profitability of uneven-aged management of Norway sp…
The diet of spotted cuscus (Spilocuscus maculatus) in natural and captivity habitat
2010
Saragih EW, Sadsoeitoeboen MJ, Pattiselanno F. 2010. The diet of spotted cuscus (Spilocuscus maculatus) in natural andcaptivity habitat. Nusantara Bioscience 2: 78-83. The ex-situ conservation of cuscus (Spilocuscus maculatus) under captivatingcondition is an alternative solution to protect cuscus from extinction. Diets became the main factor in order to support the domesticationprocess. Particular studies on habitat and diet of cuscus have been carried out however there is still limited information on the nutritionaspects of cuscus food. This study aimed to determine the diet type, palatability and nutrient in both natural habitat and captivatingcondition. The results indicated that there …

Effect of Combining Impact-Aerobic and Strength Exercise, and Dietary Habits on Body Composition in Breast Cancer Survivors Treated with Aromatase In…
2023
This study examines both the effect of a twice-weekly combined exercise—1 h session of strength and 1 h session of impact-aerobic—on body composition and dietary habits after one year of treatment with aromatase inhibitors (AI) in breast cancer survivors. Overall, forty-three postmenopausal women with a BMI ≤ 35 kg/m2, breast cancer survivors treated with AI, were randomized into two groups: a control group (CG) (n = 22) and a training group (IG) (n = 21). Body composition, i.e., abdominal, visceral, and subcutaneous adipose tissue) was measured by magnetic resonance. In addition, some questionnaires were used to gather dietary data and to measure adherence to the Mediterranean diet. After …
Assessment of selected body composition parameters and nutritional habits of American football players in Poland: a prospective and observational stu…
2021
Introduction: American football is becoming a more and more popular sport in Poland. People practicing this sport have specific nutritional needs. A balanced and rational diet is very important in the process of training an athlete. Not only composition of the body, but also the proper diet is important of the results achieved, deciding on the athlete’s success or failure. The aim of the study is to assess the body composition and nutritional behavior of American football players. Materials and methods: The study was conducted among 46 participants from the American football club ‘Towers Opole’. They were split into 2 groups, senior (n = 31) and junior (n = 15). The following measurements w…
