'Forgotten Missionaries: St Augustine of Canterbury in Anglo-Saxon and Post-Conquest England’
2014
The essay provides a full overview of the alternate fortune of the cult of St Augustine of Canterbury and other missionaries, who hold a distinctive place in Anglo-Saxon hagiography. The essay takes into examination both literary and liturgical witnesses and both pre- and post-Conquest texts, in Latin and the vernacular. The narrative of the mission and of Augustine himself offered by Bede, although inevitably partial, shaped all the successive representations of the saint in the few literary witnesses dating from the Anglo-Saxon period. The Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum will remain the major source also in post-Conquest England and be largely drawn upon by Goscelin. For its part, …
2018
The Order of St. John always paid special attention to the publications documenting its military activities, in order to justify both its mission in defence of the faith and its requests to Christian princes for human and material resources. This editorial investment was particularly strong after the dramatic sieges of Rhodes (1480, 1522) and Malta (1565) by the Ottomans. In 1619, just a few years after the Order’s new landing in Malta, "Il glorioso trionfo della sacrosanta religion militare de’ nobili, valorosi e invitti cavalieri di S. Giovanni Gierosolimitano" was published in Italian and Spanish. This article analyses the narrative strategies used in this text within the context of coev…
This paper takes remark by the publication of «Humanae ac divinae litterae». Scritti di cultu…
Desiderio, crudeltà e conversione nell’«Agnes» di Rosvita di Gandersheim
2015
In her last hagiographical poem, «Agnes», Hrotsvit of Gandersheim (935-973) elaborates in 459 rhymed hexameters a story already told in many hagiographical an hymnological texts, the story of young roman virgin Agnes (it was told by pope Damasus, Prudentius, Ambrosius, Beda, and the anonymous «Passio Agnetis»). The paper presents and analizes Hrotsvit’s «Agnes» in his literary, historical, hagiographical, religious components and particularly insists on the themes of “desire”, “cruelty”, “conversion” and “martyrdom” which occur in it.
2016
This is an analysis of the trajectory of one of the two great families of our Medieval and Renaissance flos sanctorum. This family is formed of three works: the handwritten Compilación B (an abridged version of the Legenda aurea of Iacopo da Varazze), the Flos Sanctorum con sus ethimologías (an incunabulum of unknown date and printer) and the Leyenda de los santos, a work that thrived with several editions published since the end of the 15th century until 1579. This article explores the relationship between these three works and also analyses the specific affiliation of their principal manuscript copies and editions, concluding with how the texts have evolved from these first manuscript ver…
The traces of the cult of St. Raymond of Penyafort in the preaching of Fabian Birkowski. A contribution to studies on the Dominicans' hagiographic wr…
2021
O obecności jego kultu wśród dominikanów świadczą m.in. omówione w ar…
The secularization of Marian miracles in Miquel Peres’ La vida de la Verge Maria
2017
In this paper I discuss the whole of Ma…
2014
The legend of saint Maria Aegyptiaca knew a large diffusion in hagiographical tradition, between East and West, from VI-VII century to the end of the Middle Ages. Together with Maria, father Zosima is the most important figure of the legend (a true “deuteragonist” of the narrative plot). He meets the heremitic woman in the wilderness of Palaestina and has a particular relation with her, founded on deference and devotion, till the death and the engraving of the old Maria. The type of father Zosima, in the various versions of the story, obtains different cures by the poets and the authors. By some select specimens (essentially taked from Hildebertus of Lavardin’s «Vita beate Marie Egiptiace» …
