Il motivo della “conversione” nel «Gallicanus» di Rosvita di Gandersheim
2017
This paper focuses on the subject of conversion in Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim’s dramatic plays (or «dramatic dialogues») and, chiefly, in the first of them, the Gallicanus. The play is divided in two parts and is entirely founded on hagiograhical sources, regarding some episodes about the conversion of Gallican, emperor Constantine’s commander-in-chief (BHL 3236: Conversio Gallicani principis militiae), and the martyrdom of primicerii John and Paul (BHL 3242: Passio martyrum Iohannis et Pauli). Through a strict analysis of Hrotsvitha’s play’s matter, can be highlighted the different typologies of the conversion’s theme, which involves a spiritual renovation, and the treatment of dramatic plo…

This paper takes remark by the publication of «Humanae ac divinae litterae». Scritti di cultu…
Hagiography in Anglo-Saxon England: Adopting and Adapting Saints’ Lives into Old English Prose (Textes et Études du Moyen Âge, 73)
2014
This volume gathers fourteen new essays devoted to Old English prose saints’ lives from the late Anglo-Saxon period. Moving from diverse methodological approaches and building on the most recent developments in primary and secondary scholarship, the contributions comprehensively consider the texts and contexts of the vernacular hagiographic output both by Ælfric, the major hagiographer of his day, and by anonymous authors. Attention is devoted also to the post-Conquest legacy of Anglo-Saxon hagiography, as Ælfric’s Lives of Saints continued to be read, copied, edited, and readapted throughout the eleventh and twelfth centuries. In the new stress on the Latin source-texts, among which the lo…

La Religion triomphante, militante et martyre. Piété et valeurs guerrières dans les représentations de l’ordre de Malte
2018
The Order of St. John always paid special attention to the publications documenting its military activities, in order to justify both its mission in defence of the faith and its requests to Christian princes for human and material resources. This editorial investment was particularly strong after the dramatic sieges of Rhodes (1480, 1522) and Malta (1565) by the Ottomans. In 1619, just a few years after the Order’s new landing in Malta, "Il glorioso trionfo della sacrosanta religion militare de’ nobili, valorosi e invitti cavalieri di S. Giovanni Gierosolimitano" was published in Italian and Spanish. This article analyses the narrative strategies used in this text within the context of coev…
When the Past Makes Saints: The Knights of Malta from Sinners to Martyrs in "Il glorioso trionfo della sacrosanta religion militare di S. Giovanni Gi…
2022
After the fall of Rhodes (1522), the Order of St. John needed to recover its reputation as militia Christi and to redraft its chivalrous ideals within the context of the Catholic Renewal. However, this so-called Religion met this challenge partially and late, although it represented its glorious past as a gallery of saints and martyrs, even if they were not always officially recognised by the Church. This past, since its origin in the Holy Land, casted a shadow of sanctity into the present, confirming this Religion as being semper eadem. Such a representation is found in the book Il glorioso trionfo della sacrosanta religion militare di S. Giovanni Gierosolimitano, published in 1619 in Ital…

La Leyenda de los santos : orígenes medievales e itinerario renacentista
2016
This is an analysis of the trajectory of one of the two great families of our Medieval and Renaissance flos sanctorum. This family is formed of three works: the handwritten Compilación B (an abridged version of the Legenda aurea of Iacopo da Varazze), the Flos Sanctorum con sus ethimologías (an incunabulum of unknown date and printer) and the Leyenda de los santos, a work that thrived with several editions published since the end of the 15th century until 1579. This article explores the relationship between these three works and also analyses the specific affiliation of their principal manuscript copies and editions, concluding with how the texts have evolved from these first manuscript ver…
