Efficacy of Surgical Techniques in Hallux Abductus Valgus by Application of Scale American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society: literature review
2018
Variable pulmonary manifestations in Chitayat syndrome: Six additional affected individuals
2020
Hand hyperphalangism leading to shortened index fingers with ulnar deviation, hallux valgus, mild facial dysmorphism and respiratory compromise requiring assisted ventilation are the key features of Chitayat syndrome. This condition results from the recurrent heterozygous missense variant NM_006494.2:c.266A>G; p.(Tyr89Cys) in ERF on chromosome 19q13.2, encoding the ETS2 repressor factor (ERF) protein. The pathomechanism of Chitayat syndrome is unknown. To date, seven individuals with Chitayat syndrome and the recurrent pathogenic ERF variant have been reported in the literature. Here, we describe six additional individuals, among them only one presenting with a history of assisted ventil…
Outcomes After Chevron Osteotomy with and Without Additional Akin Osteotomy: A Retrospective Comparative Study
2023
Abstract Background Chevron osteotomy is one of the most common approaches to hallux valgus corrective surgery. This procedure is often combined with Akin osteotomy of the proximal phalanx of the hallux. There are no definitive guidelines specifying the indications for a given osteotomy technique nor data on postoperative loss of correction or the effect of the type of first-ray surgery on the development of adjacent-joint arthritis. The aim of this study was to assess radiographic treatment outcomes via chevron osteotomy with and without Akin osteotomy. Methods The study evaluated 117 patients treated in the period 2016–2019. Ninety-nine of those patients underwent distal chevron osteotomy…
Starpdisciplinārie pētījumi medicīnas koledžās : tēžu krājums
2021
Plantar pressures determinants in mild Hallux Valgus.
2010
While podobarometric techniques have been applied to the study of pressures in Hallux Valgus (HV), little is known about its clinical and radiological determinants. So, the aim of the present study was to determine the plantar pressure pattern in participants with mild HV, comparing to a control group, and their clinical and anthropometric determinants. Biofoot/IBV(®) in-shoe system was used to evaluate 79 participants with mild HV. Computerized measurements of the 1st intermetatarsal angle (IMA) and the hallux abductus angle (HAA) were made on antero-posterior radiographs. The clinical outcome was assessed using the AOFAS score. The dependent baropodometric variables and the independent cl…
Hallux Valgus Correction in Young Patients with Minimally Invasive Technique
2012
The term hallux valgus was introduced into the literature in 1871 when Hueter (Hueter, 1871, as cited in Kelikian, 1965) defined the deformity as an abduction contracture in which the great toe is turned away from the mid-line of the body(fig. 1). The adjective valgus implies a static deformity and should not be used interchangeably with abductus which refers to movement caused by muscle function.
EMG and force production of the flexor hallucis longus muscle in isometric plantarflexion and the push-off phase of walking
2015
Large forces are generated under the big toe in the push-off phase of walking. The largest flexor muscle of the big toe is the flexor hallucis longus (FHL), which likely contributes substantially to these forces. This study examined FHL function at different levels of isometric plantarflexion torque and in the push-off phase at different speeds of walking. FHL and calf muscle activity were measured with surface EMG and plantar pressure was recorded with pressure insoles. FHL activity was compared to the activity of the calf muscles. Force and impulse values were calculated under the big toe, and were compared to the entire pressed area of the insole to determine the relative contribution of…
Radiographic Outcomes of Hallux Valgus Deformity Correction With Chevron and Scarf Osteotomies
2023
There is no gold standard in the treatment of hallux valgus deformity. The purpose of our study was to compare various aspects of radiographic assessment following scarf and chevron osteotomies and try to determine which technique helps achieve a more pronounced intermetatarsal angle (IMA) and hallux valgus angle (HVA) correction and produces lower rates of complications, including adjacent-joint arthritis. This study included patients who underwent hallux valgus correction with the scarf (n = 32) or chevron (n = 181) method with a follow-up period of over 3 years. We evaluated the following parameters: HVA, IMA, duration of hospital stay, complications, development of adjacent-joint arthri…
A novel global postural alteration? Qualitative assessment of hallux valgus and swallowing disorder in human posture: A preliminary investigation on …
2020
Hallux Valgus (HV) and Swallowing Disorder (SD) are two multifactorial postural and biomechanical alterations. It is very important to look for the incidence of these two conditions in order to promote psycho-physical and postural well-being. Our study aimed to clinically assess the presence of HV and SD in a large group with different ages spans. Fours skilled professionals performed the assessment following clinical criteria. A total of 61 volunteers subjects (163.5 ± 14.1 cm; 59.7 ± 15.7 kg; 22.9 ± 13.2 yrs.) were selected for the study. The 51% of the sample showed the HV alteration, 30% and 73% respectively for male and female. Regarding ages cluster, the HV was present in 44% under 20…
Intraosseous Fixation Compared to Plantar Plate Fixation for First Metatarsocuneiform Arthrodesis
2014
Background: Metatarsocuneiform (MTC) fusion is a treatment option for management of hallux valgus. We compared the biomechanical characteristics of an internal fixation device with plantar plate fixation. Methods: Seven matched pairs of feet from human cadavers were used to compare the intramedullary (IM) device plus compression screw to plantar plate combined with a compression screw. Specimen constructs were loaded in a cyclic 4-point bending test. We obtained initial/final stiffness, maximum load, and number of cycles to failure. Bone mineral density was measured with peripheral quantitative computed tomography. Performance was compared using time to event analysis with number of cycles …
