Visual scale factor for speed perception rendering in car driving simulation

2010

Speed perception is an important task that the driver must perform continuously to control his/her vehicle. It appears that many factors influence this perception: height of the point of view, field of view, realism of the environment, but also realism of audio and proprioceptive rendering. If some high-performance car driving simulators are able to render motion satisfactorily according to all these criteria, it is not always the case. As a result, speed perception is thus often under estimated, leading into producing higher speeds than in real conditions. Perceptual validity is then not good enough to study driver's behavior. To solve this problem, a technique has recently seen the light,…

Late Quaternary history ofHippophaë rhamnoidesL. (Elaeagnaceae) inferred from chalcone synthase intron (Chsi) sequences and chloroplast DNA variation

2006

Fossil pollen records indicate that Hippophae rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) was widespread on late- and early postglacial raw soils throughout much of central and northern Europe, but that Early Holocene reforestation restricted populations to northern coastal habitats, or along mountain streams in the Alps, Pyrenees, and Carpathians. We used sequence variation at the nuclear chalcone synthase intron ( Chsi ), in conjunction with chloroplast DNA–restriction fragment length polymorphism data, to investigate the intraspecific phylogeny, phylogeographic structure, and expansion demographic history of this dioecious and wind-pollinated shrub at its range-wide scale in Europe and Asia Minor. Four m…

Weitere Migräne-Studie der Modellvorhaben veröffentlicht: Effektivität der Akupunktur zur Prophylaxe der Migräne: eine multizentrische, randomisierte…

2006

Background Our aim was to assess the efficacy of a part-standardised verum acupuncture procedure, in accordance with the rules of traditional Chinese medicine, compared with that of part-standardised sham acupuncture and standard migraine prophylaxis with beta blockers, calcium-channel blockers, or antiepileptic drugs in the reduction of migraine days 26 weeks after the start of treatment. Methods This study was a prospective, randomised, multicentre, doubleblind, parallel-group, controlled, clinical trial, undertaken between April 2002 and July 2005. Patients who had two to six migraine attacks per month were randomly assigned verum acupuncture (n = 313), sham acupuncture (n = 339), or sta…

Internalismi, eksternalismi ja keskiaikainen havaintofilosofia

2017

Internalismin ja eksternalismin välisellä erottelulla on nykyepistemologiassa keskeinen asema, ja käsiteparia käytetään myös mielentilojen sisältöä koskevissa keskusteluissa. Erottelun keskeinen ajatus on yksinkertainen.

Responsiveness of Electromyographically Assessed Skeletal Muscle Inactivity – methodological exploration and implications for health benefits

2022

Abstract Prolonged sedentary behaviour is detrimental to health due to low contractile activity in large lower extremity muscle groups. This muscle inactivity can be measured with electromyography (EMG), but it is unknown how methodological factors affect responsiveness longitudinally. This study aimed to rank 16 different EMG inactivity thresholds based on their responsiveness (absolute and standardized effect size, responsiveness) using data from a randomized controlled trial targeted at reducing and breaking up sedentary time (InPact, ISRCTN28668090). EMG inactivity duration and usual EMG inactivity bout duration (weighted median of bout lengths) were measured from large lower extremity …

Genetically engineered V79 Chinese hamster cells metabolically activate the cytostatic drugs cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide.

1990

V79 cells, genetically engineered to express active cytochromes P450IIB1 and P450IA1, were used to study the cytotoxicity and mutagenicity of cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide. Cyclophosphamide, tested up to a concentration of 2 mM, was not cytotoxic in V79 nor in the P450IA1-expressing V79-derived cell line XEM2. Pronounced cytotoxicity was, however, observed in the P450IIB1-expressing V79-derived cell line SD1. Induction of gene mutations (acquisition of 6-thioguanine resistance) was observed in SD1 cells as well, but the effects were weak. Ifosfamide was inactive in V79 cells, but was cytotoxic in SD1 cells. Ifosfamide mustard, an active metabolite of ifosfamide, was equally cytotoxic and …

External Versus Internal Metabolic Activation of Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds in Mutagenicity Tests: A Comparison Using Heterologous Expression Syst…

1996

Abstract Benzo[a]pyrene-trans-7,8-dihydrodiol was virtually non-mutagenic to Chinese hamster V79p cells, but was strongly mutagenic to a V79-derived cell line expressing cytochrome P450 1A1, when the cells were exposed separately. In mixed cultures of these two cell types, it showed about 50 % of the mutagenic activity in V79p cells, compared to that observed in the enzyme-proficient cell line, indicating an efficient intercellular transfer of the active metabolite. The benzylic alcohols 1-hydroxymethylpyrene and 6-hydroxymethylbenzo[a]-pyrene were weakly mutagenic to Salmonella typhimurium TA1538 in the absence of a metabolic activation system, but were potent mutagens to a TA1538-derived …

Circadian rhythm and effects of light on cAMP content of the dwarf hamster suprachiasmatic nucleus

1998

The present study was conducted in the dwarf hamster (Phodopus sungorus) to investigate whether a circadian rhythm is present in the content of the second messenger cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the endogenous clock in mammals. In animals held under light/dark conditions (LD), we observed high levels at the end of the light phase and low levels during the night in frozen SCN punches. In animals held in continuous dark, a similar rhythm was seen although a second peak was present in the subjective day. In senile hamsters under LD, the decrease of cAMP levels at the light transition was not seen. These data, obtained for the first time from …

Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia applicability in myocardial infarction prevention and recovery.

2012

Abstract Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (IHH) has been the focus of important research in cardioprotection, and it has been associated with several mechanisms. Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia inhibits prolyl hydroxylases (PHD) activity, increasing the stabilization of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) and activating crucial adaptative genes. It has been hence suggested that IHH might be a simple intervention, which may offer a thoughtful benefits to patients with acute myocardial infarction and no complications. Nevertheless, several doubts exist as to whether IHH is a really safe technique, with little to no complications in post-myocardial infarction patients. Intermittent hypobaric hypox…

What hampers green product innovation: the effect of experience

2019

Based on representative firm-level survey data for Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, this study systematically analyzes the relevance and drivers of barriers to green product innovation using the example of green energy technologies. “Low willingness to pay”, “high development costs”, “high commercial uncertainty”, and “lack of favorable political framework” are identified as the most important barriers. Moreover, we find that the firms’ innovation experience is an important driver of the level of green innovation barriers. Green innovation barriers are more accentuated for firms with green innovation activity than for firms with no green innovation activity. However, experience from diffe…
