Immune Tolerance Induction in Hemophilia A: A Review

In this article, a comparative analysis of the data stemming from the studies conducted in the field of immune tolerance treatment (ITT) of hemophilia A was attempted. Comparisons are difficult because previous studies differ in many respects, including the dosage of factor (F) VIII, the number of FVIII administrations per day, the association with immunosuppressive drugs (prednisone, cyclophosphamide), and, most importantly, the definition of success in terms of the reacquisition of tolerance. Modulation of oestrogen excretion profiles by adjuvant chemotherapy in pre- and postmenopausal breast cancer.

Modulation of steroid status by conventional chemotherapy was studied in 31 breast cancer patients receiving CMF and in 31 age-matched breast cancer patients without any therapy, taken as controls. This was achieved through the study of oestrogen excretion profiles using previously identified parameters and referring not only to classical but also to the “other”, namely catechol and unusual, oestrogen metabolites. After CMF treatment the premenopausal patients exhibit a modified excretion pattern, mainly concerning a marked and significant reduction of classical oestrogens, as shown by pattern indices. To evaluate in a prospective multicenter trial the feasibility and clinical efficacy of the combination of alemtuzumab (Campath-1H) with the cyclophosphamide/doxorubicin/vincristine/prednisone (CHOP) regimen (CHOP-C) as the primary treatment for patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), between January 2003 and December 2005, 24 consecutive patients with PTCL entered the study and received 8 CHOP courses. Alemtuzumab was added at 30 mg subcutaneously at day −1 initially to the first 4 courses (4 patients), and then to all 8 courses (20 patients). Objectives Self-compassion can facilitate self-improvement motivation. We examined the effects of self-compassion in response to dietary lapses on outcomes relevant to weight-loss strivings using a longitudinal design. The indirect effects of self-compassion via guilt and shame were also explored. Abstract V79 Chinese hamster cell lines genetically engineered to express rat CYP2B1, CYP1A1, CYP1A2, and their parental cell lines V79-MZ, without acetyltransferase, and V79-NH, with acetyltransferase, were studied for chromosome aberrations and sister chromatid exchange induced by aflatoxin B 1 , cyclophosphamide, benzo[a]pyrene, 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene and dimethylnitrosamine. Characterization of an epithelial, nearly diploid liver cell strain, from Chinese hamster, able to activate promutagens

Epithelial liver cells of the Chinese hamster (CHEL cells) were propagated in culture for 35 passages. At favourable cell densities, the population doubling time in normal medium, was 20 h. L-Tyrosine amino transferase activity was retained at a measurable level, but its enhancement by dexamethasone was detected solely in cells of early passages. Pyruvate kinase was strongly activated by fructose-1,6-biphosphate at low substrate concentrations. These enzymatic properties suggest that the CHEL cells are derived from a sub-population of parenchymal hepatocytes or from cells closely related to parenchymal hepatocytes. With a lag period of a few hours, CHEL cultures metabolized benzo[a]pyrene. …

During operations with AGN-201 “COSTANZA” nuclear research reactor of Palermo University a failure of a compensated boron-lined ionization chamber provided with a measurement channel was highlighted. A maintenance program aimed to verify the operative conditions of all measurement systems was then started. It was easy to identify as cause of the malfunction a seepage of water inside the container of a Westinghouse WL 6377 ion chamber due to a lack of watertight closure. This can be attributed to corrosion of the container due to parasitic currents circulating between the container, the chamber and the reactor tank that acts as electrical ground of the system. Abstract The discovery of rhamnose-binding lectins (RBLs) in teleost fish eggs led to the identification of a novel lectin family characterized by a unique sequence motif and a structural fold, and initially proposed to modulate fertilization. Further studies of the RBL tissue localization and gene organization were also suggestive of role(s) in innate immunity.
