Different rates of spontaneous mutation of chloroplastic and nuclear viroids as determined by high-fidelity ultra-deep sequencing

2017

[EN] Mutation rates vary by orders of magnitude across biological systems, being higher for simpler genomes. The simplest known genomes correspond to viroids, subviral plant replicons constituted by circular non-coding RNAs of few hundred bases. Previous work has revealed an extremely high mutation rate for chrysanthemum chlorotic mottle viroid, a chloroplastreplicating viroid. However, whether this is a general feature of viroids remains unclear. Here, we have used high-fidelity ultra-deep sequencing to determine the mutation rate in a common host (eggplant) of two viroids, each representative of one family: the chloroplastic eggplant latent viroid (ELVd, Avsunviroidae) and the nuclear pot…

Effects of grip and push forces on the acute response of the hand-arm system under vibrating conditions

1993

The purpose of the occupational medicine component of a joint research project was to study the effects of grip and push forces on the acute reaction of the hand-arm system under vibrating conditions. Several series of experiments were carried out by means of a vibration simulator in a laboratory environment in order to study biodynamic vibration behaviour, muscle response, skin temperature, shifts of the vibration perception threshold and the intensity of subjective vibration perception; in addition, field tests with hammer drills were conducted. On the whole, the findings obtained suggest that the coupling of the hand with the handle involved in using vibrating tools has a considerable im…

Cerebral potentials elicited by mechanical stimuli to the human leg: influence of artifacts

1992

Mechanical stimulation with a reflex hammer was applied to the quadriceps muscle tendon of healthy volunteers and patients. The time-locked electrical signals were recorded from the scalp. In all cases, reproducible potentials could be recorded, with latencies in a range of 20 ms to 100 ms. The potentials recorded in patients under complete spinal anesthesia were similar to those derived before the anesthesia. In brain dead patients who showed absence of median nerve or posterior tibial nerve SEP, reproducible potentials after mechanical stimuli could be recorded as well. The results suggest that the hammer taps lead to mechanical shock waves which are propagated along the body producing ti…

Acute effects of shock-type vibration transmitted to the hand-arm system.

1984

The aim of the project was to find out whether shock-type vibration of hand-tools compared to non-impulsive vibration has stronger acute effects on the hand-arm system and therefore needs a stricter evaluation from the occupational health point of view in comparison with the requirements of the Draft International Standard ISO-DIS 5349. Under laboratory conditions, subjects were exposed to simulated vibration of hand-tools (grinder, chain saw, hammer-drill, pneumatic hammer, rivet hammer and nailer). The following evaluation criteria were used: biomechanical transmissibility of the hand-arm system (wrist, elbow joint, shoulder joint); muscle-activity (m. flexor carpi ulnaris, m. biceps, m. …

Generalized hypergeometric functions and the evaluation of scalar one-loop integrals in Feynman diagrams

2000

Present and future high-precision tests of the Standard Model and beyond for the fundamental constituents and interactions in Nature are demanding complex perturbative calculations involving multi-leg and multi-loop Feynman diagrams. Currently, large effort is devoted to the search for closed expressions of loop integrals, written whenever possible in terms of known - often hypergeometric-type - functions. In this work, the scalar three-point function is re-evaluated by means of generalized hypergeometric functions of two variables. Finally, use is made of the connection between such Appell functions and dilogarithms coming from a previous investigation, to recover well-known results.

Cinceles en la Edad del Bronce italiana: aspectos tecnológicos y tipológicos

2010

Bronze chisels are tools used “à percussion posée”; this means they need a minimum length and some functional parts (tang, body, blade); they could have a handle of perishable material and they were used with a hammer to work wood, bronze and other materials. Chisels can be classified following their functional parts; the first element is the shape (rod or socketed chisel); the second one is body section; the third one is tang section. Chronology and distribution of every type were identified to obtain a general view of this class of tools during the Italian Bronze Age.

Identification and robust control of DC/DC converter Hammerstein model

2008

Abstract—This paper deals with model-based robust control of dc/dc power electronic converters. The converter is described by means of a Hammerstein model consisting of the nonlinear static characteristics of the converter and a linear time-invariant (LTI) uncertainmodel whose parameters depend on the actual duty-cycle operating range. This suggests that the controller be designed using robust control techniques. In view of applying robust control, identification of the earlier LTI models is performed by means of simulation experiments, carried out on a converter switching model implemented onMATLAB/SIMULINK environment. Internal model control (IMC) structure is employed for the controller …

Hammerstein Model-Based Robust Control of DC/DC Converters

2007

This paper deals with model-based robust control of DC/DC power electronic converters. The converter is modelled by means of its static characteristic and a few continuous-time linear and time-invariant (LTI) models corresponding to contiguous ranges of duty-cycle. The model appears as a Hammerstein model in which the values of the parameters of the LTI part depend on the actual duty-cycle operating range. This suggests to describe the converter as an uncertain system to be controlled using robust control techniques. Frequency domain approach is used for describing the nominal model and the uncertainty. In view of applying robust control, identification of the LTI models is performed by mea…

Identification and Robust Control of a Quadratic DC/DC Boost Converter by Hammerstein Model

2015

This paper deals with the theoretical framework definition and the experimental application of the Hammerstein (HM) identification and related robust control technique to a quadratic dc/dc single-switch boost (Q-boost) converter. A set of fourth-order transfer functions (TFs) has been identified with the Hammerstein approach, on the basis of a pseudorandom-binary-sequence (PRBS) excitation signal. The set of identified TFs has been then used to design a suitable robust control technique, able to properly deal with the converter parameter uncertainty and load variations. The proposed approach has been tested in numerical simulation and validated experimentally on a suitably developed test se…
