Decreasing muscle performance associated with increasing disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Objectives Increasing evidence suggests that inflammation has a detrimental effect on muscle strength. Our objective was to analyse the association between muscle performance and different disease activity levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Method A total of 199 consecutive outpatients were subject to cross-sectional assessment. Measurements of grip strength, endurance of the upper and lower limbs and trunk strength were combined as a muscle performance composite score (MPCS), using a standardised method. Non-linear analysis of plane steel prestressed truss in fire

The concept of analysis of 2-D static loaded prestressed steel trusses till failure during fire using a modified method of forces is presented. Failure of steel trusses in fire is based on the criterion of stresses. Behaviour of steel is described by non-linear constitutive model (based on hypo-elastic Ramberg-Osgood formula and Dorn creep theory) and Plem proposition (for string). Both models are approximated in calculations by hyperbolic Norton-Bailey rule. Fire simulates thermal force as an action of high temperature that increases linearly up to some level. A sample of 392 students (aged 12-13 years, M± SD: 12. 52% girls) completed a learning module integrating informal hands-on mathematics and arts activity (extending STEM to STEAM). Within a 140 minute workshop period participants worked with commercially available ‘4Dframe’ Math and STEAM learning toolkits to design and create original, personal and individual geometrical structures. Two science pedagogues acted as tutors supervising the process and intervened only when needed. The purpose of the work described in this paper is to construct and implement prediction models for optimizing container handling in particular at Cagliari’s Terminal Container. Prediction models are based on heuristic algorithms such as neural networks and classification and regression trees and evolutionary algorithms such as Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). La histiocitosis crónica diseminada es una enfermedad sistémica por proliferación tumoral de células histiocitarias tipo Langerhans. Su etiología y patogenia no esta del todo aclarada y las manifestaciones clínicas se producen por acúmulos e infiltrados de este tipo celular en los tejidos y órganos. Presentamos 10 pacientes, seis niños y cuatro niñas, con histiocitosis crónica diseminada. La edad de aparición de la enfermedad varió desde los 4 meses hasta los 3'2 años, con una edad media de 1'7 años. The approach of combining GeoGebra and origami is well accepted among students in the school "Petro Kuzmjak" where it is used to teach geometry lessons. This article elaborates on how to introduce students (upper elementary and high school students, age 14-18) to Platonic solids and their properties through combination of GeoGebra and origami activities. Some of the important mathematical concepts related to these well-known geometrical solids can be explained to students applying hands-on activities along with educational software. peerReviewed

Performance of the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC

ALICE is the heavy-ion experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The experiment continuously took data during the first physics campaign of the machine from fall 2009 until early 2013, using proton and lead-ion beams. In this paper we describe the running environment and the data handling procedures, and discuss the performance of the ALICE detectors and analysis methods for various physics observables.
