Semiotics of pride and profit: interrogating commodification in indigenous handicraft production
2014
This study investigates the shifting terrain of pride, profit and power relations in minority language communities under contemporary globalisation. While “pride” associates linguistic-cultural heritage with identity and preservation, “profit” views these as sources of economic gain. In contemporary late capitalism, “pride” seems to be increasingly giving way to “profit”. Arguing that this transformation needs to be interrogated in terms of complexity and that a detailed, multilayered semiotic analysis can open a privileged window for such an inquiry, this study combines critical multimodal discourse analysis and an ethnographic approach to analyse processes of semiotic commodification in h…
Ethnobotanical research in Cava de' Tirreni area, Southern Italy
2019
Abstract Background To best of our knowledge, this is the first quantitative ethnobotanical study with the aim of documenting the local knowledge and practices of using plants for curing diseases in the Cava de’ Tirreni area, Salerno Province, Campania Region, Italy. The present ethnobotanical field study, carried out during 2016–2017, documents the local uses of 119 plant species for medicinal, food and domestic purposes. Methods Ethnobotanical data were documented from 70 informants: field data were collected and information on the uses of plants was gathered through semi-structured and structured interviews with persons who still retain traditional ethnobotanical knowledge.
Molecular Identification of Yeasts Associated with Traditional Egyptian Dairy Products
2009
This study aimed to examine the diversity and ecology of yeasts associated with traditional Egyptian dairy products employing molecular techniques in yeast identification. A total of 120 samples of fresh and stored Domiati cheese, kariesh cheese, and "Matared" cream were collected from local markets and examined. Forty yeast isolates were cultured from these samples and identified using the restriction-fragment length polymorphism (RFLPs) of 5.8S-ITS rDNA region and sequencing of the domains D1 and D2 of the 26S rRNA gene. Yeasts were identified as Issatchenkia orientalis (13 isolates), Candida albicans (4 isolates), Clavispora lusitaniae (Candida lusitaniae) (9 isolates), Kodamaea ohmeri (…
Comparison of some dispersion-corrected and traditional functionals as applied to peptides and conformations of cyclohexane derivatives.
2012
We compare the energetic and structural properties of fully optimized α-helical and antiparallel β-sheet polyalanines and the energetic differences between axial and equatorial conformations of three cyclohexane derivatives (methyl, fluoro, and chloro) as calculated using several functionals designed to treat dispersion (B97-D, ωB97x-D, M06, M06L, and M06-2X) with other traditional functionals not specifically parametrized to treat dispersion (B3LYP, X3LYP, and PBE1PBE) and with experimental results. Those functionals developed to treat dispersion significantly overestimate interaction enthalpies of folding for the α-helix and predict unreasonable structures that contain Ramachandran φ and …
Thoughts on What Chemists Can Contribute to Fighting SARS-CoV-2 - A Short Note on Hand Sanitizers, Drug Candidates and Outreach.
2020
Abstract The SARS‐CoV‐2 outbreak causing the respiratory disease COVID‐19 has left many chemists in academia without an obvious option to contribute to fighting the pandemic. Some of our recent experiences indicate that there are ways to overcome this dilemma. A three‐pronged approach is proposed.
PCR-DGGE fingerprints of microbial succession during a manufacture of traditional water buffalo mozzarella cheese.

D . E R C O L I N I , G . M A U R I E L L O , G . B L A I O T T A , G . M O S C H E T T I A N D S . C O P P O L A . 2003. Aims: To monitor the process and the starter effectiveness recording a series of fingerprints of the microbial diversity occurring at different steps of mozzarella cheese manufacture and to investigate the involvement of the natural starter to the achievement of the final product. Methods and Results: Samples of raw milk, natural whey culture (NWC) used as starter, curd after ripening and final product were collected during a mozzarella cheese manufacture. Total microbial DNA was directly extracted from the dairy samples as well as bulk colonies collected from the plates…
A multiplex RTi-PCR reaction for simultaneous detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus on fresh, minimally pr…
2007
In this work, a new multiplex single-tube real-time PCR approach is presented for the detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus, three of the more frequent food-borne bacterial pathogens that are usually investigated in a variety of food matrices. The study includes the design and specificity testing, of a new primer and probe specific for Salmonella spp. Reaction conditions were adjusted for the simultaneous amplification and detection of specific fragments in the beta-glucuronidase (uidA, E. coli) and Thermonulease (nuc, Sta. aureus) genes, and in the replication origin sequence (oriC, Salmonella spp.). Melting-curve analysis using a SYBR Green I RTi…
Axial (apical-basal) expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-survival genes in the lake baikal demosponge Lubomirskia baicalensis.
2006
Like in all other Metazoa, also in sponges (Porifera) proliferation, differentiation, and death of cells are controlled by apoptotic processes, thus allowing the establishment of a Bauplan (body plan). The demosponge Lubomirskia baicalensis from the Lake Baikal is especially suitable to assess the role of the apoptotic molecules, since its grade of construction is highly elaborated into an encrusting base and branches composed of modules lined up along the apical-basal axis. The four cDNAs, ALG-2, BAK, MA-3, and Bcl-2, were isolated from this sponge species. The expression levels of these genes follow characteristic gradients. While the proapoptotic genes are highly expressed at the base of…
Geo‐referencing naturalistic driving data using a novel method based on vehicle speed
2013
Naturalistic driving is an experimentation model that allows us to recognise the driving modes observing the driver's behaviour at the wheel of a set of people in natural conditions during long periods of observation. This research methodology aims at increasing the representativeness of the data collected in opposition to data stemming from highly controlled laboratory experiments. However, naturalistic driving research designs produce large volumes of data that are difficult to handle. Thus, it is very important to work with suitable methods for representing and interpreting data, allowing us to observe the variability of the results. The aim of this study is to implement a new methodolog…
