The evolution of mating preferences for genetic attractiveness and quality in the presence of sensory bias.

2022

The aesthetic preferences of potential mates have driven the evolution of a baffling diversity of elaborate ornaments. Which fitness benefit—if any—choosers gain from expressing such preferences is controversial, however. Here, we simulate the evolution of preferences for multiple ornament types (e.g., “Fisherian,” “handicap,” and “indicator” ornaments) that differ in their associations with genes for attractiveness and other components of fitness. We model the costs of preference expression in a biologically plausible way, which decouples costly mate search from cost-free preferences. Ornaments of all types evolved in our model, but their occurrence was far from random. Females typically p…

The role of left supplementary motor area in grip force scaling

2013

Skilled tool use and object manipulation critically relies on the ability to scale anticipatorily the grip force (GF) in relation to object dynamics. This predictive behaviour entails that the nervous system is able to store, and then select, the appropriate internal representation of common object dynamics, allowing GF to be applied in parallel with the arm motor commands. Although psychophysical studies have provided strong evidence supporting the existence of internal representations of object dynamics, known as "internal models", their neural correlates are still debated. Because functional neuroimaging studies have repeatedly designated the supplementary motor area (SMA) as a possible …

A Microassay for Measuring Glycogen in 96-Well-Cultured Cells

1996

Abstract This study describes a rapid, sensitive, and automated spectrophotometric enzymatic microassay that measures the intracellular glycogen of primary cultured hepatocytes and other cultured cells in 96-well plates and can be adapted for other samples that are transferred to these plates. The procedure involves in situ disruption of cells, followed by hydrolysis of glycogen into glucosyl units by fungal glucoamylase (exo-1,4-α- D -glucosidase, EC 3.2.1.3), and glucose determination with the glucose oxidase colorimetric method. The color intensity can be measured in conventional ELISA readers, and the data can be fed to an on-line computer for rapid processing. The advantages of this me…

''Active Collisions in Altered Gravity Reveal Eye-Hand Coordination Strategies''

2012

White, Olivier | Lefevre, Philippe | Wing, Alan M. | Bracewell, R. Martyn | Thonnard, Jean-Louis; International audience; ''Most object manipulation tasks involve a series of actions demarcated by mechanical contact events, and gaze is usually directed to the locations of these events as the task unfolds. Typically, gaze foveates the target 200 ms in advance of the contact. This strategy improves manual accuracy through visual feedback and the use of gaze-related signals to guide the hand/ object. Many studies have investigated eye-hand coordination in experimental and natural tasks; most of them highlighted a strong link between eye movements and hand or object kinematics. In this experime…

How to preserve and handle fish liver samples to conserve RNA integrity

2019

As transcriptomic studies are becoming more and more common, it is important to ensure that the RNA used in the analyses is of good quality. The RNA integrity may be compromised by storage temperature or freeze-thaw cycles, but these have not been well studied in poikilothermic fishes. This work studied the effects of tissue storage time and temperature, and freeze-thaw cycles of tissue and extracted RNA on RNA integrity in brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) liver. The storage time and temperature had an effect on RNA integrity, but RNA suitable for quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) (RIN > 7) was still obtained from samples preserved at − 20 °C for 6 months. Freeze-thaw cycles of …

Administration of Triclabendazole Is Safe and Effective in Controlling Fascioliasis in an Endemic Community of the Bolivian Altiplano

2012

Background Emergence of human fascioliasis prompted a worldwide control initiative including a pilot study in a few countries. Two hyperendemic areas were chosen: Huacullani, Northern Altiplano, Bolivia, representing the Altiplanic transmission pattern with high prevalences and intensities; Cajamarca valley, Peru, representing the valley pattern with high prevalences but low intensities. Coprological sample collection, transport and study procedures were analyzed to improve individual diagnosis and subsequent treatments and surveillance activities. Therefore, a coproantigen-detection technique (MM3-COPRO ELISA) was evaluated, using classical techniques for egg detection for comparison. Meth…

Adolescents’ health literacy, health protective measures, and health-related quality of life during the Covid-19 pandemic

2020

AbstractPurposeFirst, to describe adolescents’ health information sources and knowledge, health literacy (HL), health protective measures, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) during the initial phase of the Covid-19 pandemic in Norway. Second, to investigate the association between HL and the knowledge and behavior relevant for preventing spread of the virus. Third, to explore variables associated with HRQoL in a pandemic environment.MethodsThis cross-sectional study includes survey data from 2,205 Norwegian adolescents 16–19 years of age. The participants reported on their health information sources, HL, handwashing knowledge and behavior, number of social interactions, and HRQoL. A…

Formulation, process conditions, and biological evaluation of dairy mixed gels containing fava bean and milk proteins: Effect on protein retention in…

2019

International audience; Food formulation and process conditions can indirectly influence AA digestibility and bioavailability. Here we investigated the effects of formulation and process conditions used in the manufacture of novel blended dairy gels (called "mixed gels" here) containing fava bean (Vicia faba) globular proteins on both protein composition and metabolism when given to young rats. Three mixed dairy gels containing casein micelles and fava bean proteins were produced either by chemical acidification (A) with glucono-δ-lactone (GDL) or by lactic acid fermentation. Fermented gels containing casein and fava bean proteins were produced without (F) or with (FW) whey proteins. The AA…

What physical performance measures predict incident cognitive decline among intact older adults? A 4.4 year follow up study

2016

Reductions in physical performance, cognitive impairment (CI) and decline (CD), are common in older age, but few prospective cohort studies have considered the relationship between these domains. In this study we investigated whether reduced physical performance and low handgrip/lower limbs strength, could predict a higher incidence of CI/CD during a 4-year follow-up among a cohort of elderly individuals. From 3099 older community-dwelling individuals initially enrolled in the Progetto Veneto Anziani (PRO.V.A.) study, 1249 participants without CI at the baseline were included (mean age 72.2 years, 59.5% females). Physical performance measures included the Short Physical Performance Battery …
