Digital performance improvements of a CdTe pixel detector for high flux energy-resolved X-ray imaging
2015
Abstract Photon counting detectors with energy resolving capabilities are desired for high flux X-ray imaging. In this work, we present the performance of a pixelated Schottky Al/p-CdTe/Pt detector (4×4) coupled to a custom-designed digital readout electronics for high flux measurements. The detector (4×4×2 mm 3 ) has an anode layout based on an array of 16 pixels with a geometric pitch of 1 mm (pixel size of 0.6 mm). The 4-channel readout electronics is able to continuously digitize and process the signals from each pixel, performing multi-parameter analysis (event arrival time, pulse shape, pulse height, pulse time width, etc.) even at high fluxes and at different throughput and energy re…
Sampling and repeatability in the evaluation of hepatitis C virus genetic variability.
2003
Among the experimental techniques available to study the genetic variability of RNA virus populations, the most informative involve reverse transcription (RT), amplification, cloning and sequencing. The effects of several aspects of these techniques on the estimation of genetic variability in a virus population were analysed. Hepatitis C virus populations from four patients were examined. For each patient, ten series of data derived from independent PCR amplifications of a single RT reaction were obtained. The sample size of each data set was 10 sequences (in nine series) and 100 sequences (in one series). An additional data set derived from an independent RT reaction (about 10 sequences) p…
Microspore embryogenesis induced through in vitro anther culture of almond (Prunus dulcis Mill.)
2016
Anther culture is one of the most widely used methods to induce gametic embryogenesis. The aim of this investigation was to induce microspore embryogenesis in almond (Prunus dulcis Mill.), through this technique. Anthers were cultured at the vacuolated developmental stage, and seven cultivars, two culture media and two temperature treatments were assessed. Although evidence of the microspore induction was observed in all the genotypes and treatments tested (symmetrical nucleus division and multinucleated structures), calli were produced merely by anthers cultured in the medium P and the regeneration of embryos was detected only in anthers of the cultivars Filippo Ceo, Lauranne and Genco, pl…
W poszukiwaniu definicji szczęścia - oblicza szczęścia w percepcji przedszkolaków
2016
This papers aims to present the opinions of 54 kindergarten pupils from Public Kindergarten in Chrząstowice in the Opolskie province regarding how they understand and interpret the concept of happiness. The pupils were asked a number of questions regarding happiness, being happy and/or unhappy, situations when they are either happy or unhappy. The research material was further subjected to a qualitative analysis.
Tieteen sensurointiyritykset ja tutkijoiden itsesensuuri uhkaavat akateemista vapautta

Tunnen tukijoita, jotka ovat hylänneet herkullisen tutkimusaiheen, koska heitä on pelottanut, että he joutuisivat kiistanalaisen aiheen tutkimisen takia vihamielisten tahojen tikun nokkaan. Heitäkin enemmän tunnen tutkijoita, jotka eivät suostu haastateltaviksi mediassa tai jotka eivät puhu julkisissa tilaisuuksissa tutkimuksensa tuloksista heihin kohdistuvien hyökkäysten pelossa. nonPeerReviewed
The balance of HSPs expression during pregnancy: the role of placenta

β-thalassemia major (β-TM) is an inherited hemoglobinopathy caused by a quantitative defect in the synthesis of β-globin chains of hemoglobin, leading to the accumulation of free a-globin chains that aggregate and cause ineffective erythropoiesis. We have previously demonstrated that terminal erythroid maturation requires a transient activation of caspase-3 and that the chaperone Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) accumulates in the nucleus to protect GATA-1 transcription factor from caspase-3 cleavage. This nuclear accumulation of HSP70 is inhibited in human β-TM erythroblasts due to HSP70 sequestration in the cytoplasm by free a-globin chains, resulting in maturation arrest and apoptosis. Like…
On State Constrained Optimal Shape Design Problems
1987
This paper is concerned with the following optimal design problem with constraints both on the state and on the control: $$MinimizeJ(y,u)$$ (P) subject to $$A\left( u \right)y + \partial \varphi \left( y \right) \mathrel\backepsilon Bu + f,$$ (1.1) $$y \in K,$$ (1.2) $$u \in {U_{ad}}.$$ (1.3)
Carbon nanotube field-effect devices with asymmetric electrode configuration by contact geometry
2014
We have studied experimentally the conductive properties of single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) based field-effect type devices, with different contact geometries at the connecting electrode. The device designs are asymmetric with one end of the SWNT having the metal electrode deposited on top and immersing it, while at the other end, the SWNT is on top of the electrode. The devices were made with either gold or palladium as electrode materials, of which the latter resulted in different behavior of the different contact types. This is argued to be caused by the existence of a thin insulating layer of surface adsorbents on the palladium, possibly Pd5O4, the effect of which is enhanced by th…
Population history in social spiders repeated: colony structure and lineage evolution inStegodyphus mimosarum(Eresidae)
2009
Social cooperative spiders from diverse taxonomic families share life-history and demographic traits, including highly inbred colony structure. The combination of traits suggests constrained pathways for social evolution in spiders. The genus Stegodyphus has three independently evolved social species, which can be used as replicate samples to analyse population constraints in evolutionary time. We tested colony structure and population history of the social S. mimosarum from South and East Africa using mitochondrial DNA variation, and we compared the results to published data for the independently evolved social congener S. dumicola. S. mimosarum had many and diverse haplotypes (5-7% sequen…
