Background/Objectives: A small number of case-control studies have suggested that mitochondrial haplogroups could be associated with obesity. We examined whether obesity risk was influenced by mitochondrial haplogroup in a large North American cohort across an 8-year period. We conducted a longitudinal cohort study including individuals from the Osteoarthritis Initiative. Abstract The identity of the mummified Lady from the Barfusser Church in Basel, Switzerland has been unsolved for decades, despite the prominent location of the burial place in front of the choir screen. A recent multidisciplinary research approach came up with a possible candidate, Anna Catharina Bischoff who died in Basel in 1787 with an age of 69 years (1719–1787). To verify the identity of the mummy, genealogists of the Citizen Science Basel discovered three living individuals of the maternal lineage of two different family branches, separated from Anna Catharina Bischoff by up to 22 generations. Founder analysis is a method for analysis of nonrecombining DNA sequence data, with the aim of identification and dating of migrations into new territory. The method picks out founder sequence types in potential source populations and dates lineage clusters deriving from them in the settlement zone of interest. Here, using mtDNA, we apply the approach to the colonization of Europe, to estimate the proportion of modern lineages whose ancestors arrived during each major phase of settlement. The discovery of mitochondrial type N1a in Central European Neolithic skeletons at a high frequency enabled us to answer the question of whether the modern population is maternally descended from the early farmers instead of addressing the traditional question of the origin of early European farmers.
Morphological and molecular analysis of the freshwater bivalve Anodonta anatina in Iran and Finland

Duck mussel, Anodonta anatina is a habitat generalist inhabiting both lentic and lotic aquatic ecosystems. Due to high morphological similarity and phenotypic plasticity, A. anatina has sometimes been misidentified as A. cygnea. Here, morphological and molecular studies were conducted on Anodonta mussels inhabiting North Iran and Finland. The individuals were collected from Anzali Wetland, Tajan River (North Iran) and Jyväsjärvi Lake (Finland). The COI sequence analysis showed the existence of A. anatina in the sampling areas.
