Here, we report on the role of haptoglobin (Hp), whose expression depends on the synthesis of interleukin 6 (IL-6), related to the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS), as a possible marker of muscle improvement achieved after treatment with the polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and an increase in the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in the blood. After 4 months of intervention with 27 MS patients, we observed that Hp does not significantly increase, alongside a significant decrease in IL-6 and a significant increase in muscle percentage. At the same time, Hp synthesis is considerably and positively correlated with IL-6 both before and after treatment

Studies with tumor necrosis factor p55 receptor- and interleukin-6 (IL-6)-deficient mice have shown that IL-6 is required for hepatocyte proliferation and reconstitution of the liver mass after partial hepatectomy. The biological activities of IL-6 are potentiated when this cytokine binds soluble forms of its specific receptor subunit (sIL-6R) and the resulting complex interacts with the transmembrane signaling chain gp130. Associations between leprosy and serum protein groups

Serum protein group typings were done on a sample of n=173 adult healthy Negroes from the Macua tribe in Mozambique and on n=129 leprous individuals from the same tribe. Unfortunately, the type of leprosy is not known. Whilst between leprosy and haptoglobins, transferrins and Pi proteins no associations could be observed, statistically significant associations between leprosy and ceruloplasmin resp. β2 I were found. It is pointed out that these associations should be confirmed by further research on other populations and with respect to type and process of leprosy, until biological and population genetical interpretations will be possible.

Acute Phase Proteins Are Baseline Predictors of Tuberculosis Treatment Failure

Systemic inflammation is a characteristic feature of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). Whether systemic inflammation is associated with treatment failure in PTB is not known. Participants, who were newly diagnosed, sputum smear and culture positive individuals with drug-sensitive PTB, were treated with standard anti-tuberculosis treatment and classified as having treatment failure or microbiological cure. The plasma levels of acute phase proteins were assessed at baseline (pre-treatment). Haptoglobin interacts with apolipoprotein E and beta-amyloid and influences their crosstalk.

Beta-amyloid accumulation in brain is a driving force for Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) represents a critical player in beta-amyloid homeostasis, but its role in disease progression is controversial. We previously reported that the acute-phase protein haptoglobin binds ApoE and impairs its function in cholesterol homeostasis. Further studies on associations between leprosy and genetic markers in human serum.

Seven serum proteins were typed on a sample of 910 individuals from Angola, Africa. The sample consisted of both leprosy patients and healthy controls from the same geographical area. Significant associations with leprosy were found for the Hp and Pi systems. The results are discussed.

Pseudo-exclusion from paternity due to maternal uniparental disomy 16.

The investigation of a case of disputed paternity revealed indirect exclusion of the alleged father in the haptoglobin system and in the DNA single-locus system D16S309/Hinf I (MS205). The paternity index for the non-exclusion systems was > 10(6). Since both exclusion systems (HP and MS205) are located on chromosome 16, we investigated 10 microsatellite loci covering this chromosome with 10-20 cM resolution. Analysis of the child's chromosome showed only alleles of maternal origin and lack of inheritance of paternal alleles for five informative loci.
