Syntaxonomy and ecology of thermophilous deciduous open woodlands and scrub vegetation in Tajikistan (Middle Asia)
2022
In this paper we present the first syntaxonomic classification for the thermophilous open wood and scrub vegetation in Tajikistan with some remarks on its environmental gradients. Altogether 143 relevés were sampled between 2014–2021 using the seven-degree cover-abundance scale of Braun-Blanquet. They were classified by the modified TWINSPAN method with the use of the four step interval scale with cutoff levels of 0%, 2%, 5% and 10% and total inertia as a measure of cluster heterogeneity. Diagnostic species were identified using the phi coefficient as a fidelity measure. Detrended Correspondence Analysis was used to determine the relation between samples, vegetation units and the major grad…
Remineralization effects of conventional and experimental ion-releasing materials in chemically or bacterially-induced dentin caries lesions
2019
Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the remineralization effects of conventional and experimental ion-releasing materials on different artificial dentin carious lesions. Methods Forty human dentin discs were submitted to different demineralization protocols for simulated caries lesion: (D1) Shallow chemically-induced caries, (D2) deep chemically-induced caries, (D3) deep bacterially-induced caries. Each disc was divided in five parts; one of those served as baseline control. The remaining parts of each disc (n = 12–16/group) were treated using the following materials: EXP, an experimental resin-based bioactive material consisting of a self-etch primer and an adhesive c…
PETTERDITE, THE Cr-DOMINANT ANALOGUE OF DUNDASITE, A NEW MINERAL SPECIES FROM DUNDAS, TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA AND CALLENBERG, SAXONY, GERMANY
2000
Petterdite is a newly discovered hydrated lead chromium hydroxyl carbonate, the Cr 3+ -dominant analogue of dundasite, with a formula PbCr 2 (CO 3 ) 2 (OH) 4 ·H 2 O. The type locality is the Red Lead mine, on the Zeehan–Dundas mining field in northwestern Tasmania, Australia. The mineral also occurs in small amounts at the Callenberg nickel deposit, Saxony, Germany. Petterdite forms thin crusts made up of tiny platy crystals up to about 15 μm across, associated with crocoite and anglesite at the type locality, and with crocoite, cerussite, bindheimite, pyromorphite, and relict galena at Callenberg. The petterdite crusts are pale greyish to pinkish violet and non-fluorescent; they have an ea…

LabVIEW modeling and simulation, of the low-pass and high-pass analog filters
2015
Some programs for simulating different types of filters are developed using LabView software. Implementing a simulation program of an analog filter requires the prior establishment of mathematical model. As a general purpose programming environment, LabVIEW offers possibility of achieving some user programs for plotting frequency characteristics of passive and active analog filters, if established beforehand mathematical models that characterize their behavior. The scientific objectives of this paper are: -the analysis of the possibilities of using virtual instrumentation in the study of electrical filters; -implementation of virtual instruments for analysis and simulation of analog filters…
Mechanical Properties of Pore-Spanning Lipid Bilayers Probed by Atomic Force Microscopy
2006
AbstractWe measure the elastic response of a free-standing lipid membrane to a local indentation by using an atomic force microscope. Starting point is a planar gold-coated alumina substrate with a chemisorbed 3-mercaptopropionic acid monolayer displaying circular pores of very well defined and tunable size, over which bilayers composed of N,N,-dimethyl-N,N,-dioctadecylammonium bromide or 1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium-propane chloride were spread. Centrally indenting these “nanodrums” with an atomic force microscope tip yields force-indentation curves, which we quantitatively analyze by solving the corresponding shape equations of continuum curvature elasticity. Since the measured respon…
Effects of confinement and external fields on structure and transport in colloidal dispersions in reduced dimensionality
2012
In this work, we focus on low-dimensional colloidal model systems, via simulation studies and also some complementary experiments, in order to elucidate the interplay between phase behavior, geometric structures and transport properties. In particular, we try to investigate the (nonlinear!) response of these very soft colloidal systems to various perturbations: uniform and uniaxial pressure, laser fields, shear due to moving boundaries and randomly quenched disorder. We study ordering phenomena on surfaces or in monolayers by Monte Carlo computer simulations of binary hard-disk mixtures, the influence of a substrate being modeled by an external potential. Weak external fields allow a control…
Structural and functional consequences of the replacement of proximal residues Cys172 and Cys192 in the large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate ca…
2008
Proximal Cys(172) and Cys(192) in the large subunit of the photosynthetic enzyme Rubisco (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase; EC 4.1.1.39) are evolutionarily conserved among cyanobacteria, algae and higher plants. Mutation of Cys(172) has been shown to affect the redox properties of Rubisco in vitro and to delay the degradation of the enzyme in vivo under stress conditions. Here, we report the effect of the replacement of Cys(172) and Cys(192) by serine on the catalytic properties, thermostability and three-dimensional structure of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii Rubisco. The most striking effect of the C172S substitution was an 11% increase in the specificity factor when compared wi…
One-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling of coronal plasmas on transputer arrays
1990
Abstract We describe a concurrent implementation of the Palermo-Harvard hydrodynamic code on cost-effective and modularity expandable transputer arrays. We have tested the effectiveness of our approach by simulating an already well-studied compact solar-flare model on different transputer configurations and compared their performances with those of other machines. We have found that the speed of the concurrent program on a 16-T800 transputers array is ~1/9 of that of the equivalent code optimized for a CRAY X-MP/48. This work clearly shows that transputer-based arrays provide locally available high computing-power tools to extend the investigation of compact solar flares and similar astroph…
Characterization of lignin dissolved during alkaline pretreatment of softwood and hardwood
2015
Various alkaline pretreatments were applied to Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and silver/white birch (Betula pendula/pubescens) wood chips and the characterization of sulfur-free lignin dissolved was performed. The behavior of lignin during these pretreatments (alkali charge 1–8% NaOH, time 30–120 minutes, and temperature 130–150°C) was studied mainly in terms of lignin removal efficiency and molar mass distribution of dissolved lignin. The amount of lignin in pretreatment liquors increased along with an increase in the alkali charge of 0.8–4.4% and 0.6–3.4% of o.d. pine and birch wood, respectively. The most significant parameter affecting the molar mass of the dissolved lignin was shown to…
