Langerhans cell histiocytosis with oral manifestations: a rare and unusual case report
2012
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), is a rare, proliferative disorder in which the accumulation of pathologic Langerhans cells leads to local tissue infiltration and destruction. We present a case of a 32 years old, completely edentulous female patient who presented with erythema of hard palate, maxillary alveolar mucosa and mucosa over the distobuccal part of mandibular alveolar ridge with foci of ulcerations. Histopathologic features were suggestive of LCH which was confirmed by immunohistochemistry which was CD1a positive, confirmatory for LCH. Bone scan revealed multiple bone involvement. At this stage, disease had already progressed to multisystem involvement with endocrinal abnormali…
Focal palmoplantar and gingival keratosis ? A rare genodermatoses : case report
2020
Focal palmoplantar and gingival keratosis syndrome is a rare dominant inherited disease with an early onset in life. Clinically, the condition is characterized by pressure related thickening of the epidermis of the palms and soles, usually accompanied by pain and different levels of skin involvement and thickness between patients. Recently, we observed a 38-year-old woman with multiple non-removable, painless white plaques of variable size and thickness on the attached gingiva and a white plaque widespread across the hard palate. By further questioning, the patient comments that she has thick yellowish focal plaques in both soles of her feet. Histopathological analysis revealed a hyperplast…
Symmetrical palatal fibromatosis: An additional case report with immunohistochemical characterization
2021
Background The term "symmetrical palatal fibromatosis" was recently suggested to designate bilateral palatal lesions presenting as typically broad, "mirror" images on the posterior lateral region of the hard palate. Purpose We report an additional case of this as-yet poorly understood oral lesion in a 67-year-old male patient, with emphasis on differential diagnoses and immunohistochemical characterization. Case Report The histopathological examination demonstrated a hypocellular, fibrous connective tissue with prominent thick collagen bundles and few blood vessels. Scattered large, stellate, and sometimes binucleated fibroblasts were found. Immunohistochemistry was positive for vimentin an…
Papillary cystoadenoma lymphomatosum (Warthin-like) of minor salivary glands
2009
Papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum is a benign salivary gland tumor most frequently located in the parotid gland (Warthin?s tumor). Its presentation in other major, or in minor, salivary glands is rare. Clinically, it manifests as a slow growing tumor, fluctuant on palpation due to its cystic morphology. The treatment of choice is complete excision with wide tumor-free margins. We present a 73-year-old female patient with an asymptomatic tumor of 8 years evolution in the right posterior area of the hard palate. We performed surgical excision and a biopsy, which was reported as papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum. During the post-operative examination carried out after 3 weeks, it was obser…
Percolation and Schramm–Loewner evolution in the 2D random-field Ising model
2011
Abstract The presence of random fields is well known to destroy ferromagnetic order in Ising systems in two dimensions. When the system is placed in a sufficiently strong external field, however, the size of clusters of like spins diverges. There is evidence that this percolation transition is in the universality class of standard site percolation. It has been claimed that, for small disorder, a similar percolation phenomenon also occurs in zero external field. Using exact algorithms, we study ground states of large samples and find little evidence for a transition at zero external field. Nevertheless, for sufficiently small random-field strengths, there is an extended region of the phase d…
Transitions in a stratified Kolmogorov flow
2016
We study the Kolmogorov flow with weak stratification. We consider a stabilizing uniform temperature gradient and examine the transitions leading the flow to chaotic states. By solving the equations numerically we construct the bifurcation diagram describing how the Kolmogorov flow, through a sequence of transitions, passes from its laminar solution toward weakly chaotic states. We consider the case when the Richardson number (measure of the intensity of the temperature gradient) is $$Ri=10^{-5}$$ , and restrict our analysis to the range $$0<Re<30$$ . The effect of the stabilizing temperature is to shift bifurcation points and to reduce the region of existence of stable drifting states. The…
Uniaxial stress dependence of the dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the Na0.5K0.5NbO3and Na0.5K0.5NbO3 + 0.5 mol%MnO2ceramics
2013
Na0.5K0.5NbO3 and Na0.5K0.5NbO3 + 0.5 mol%MnO2 lead-free ceramics have been produced by solid phase hot pressing sintering process at 1120–1145°C. The results of the X-ray diffraction measurements showed that the obtained samples possessed a perovskite structure. The micrograph of the fractured surface showed a dense ceramic structure, in compliance with 93% relative density determined by the Archimedes method. The dependence of dielectric and ferroelectric properties on the uniaxial compressive stress (0–3000 bar) of the Na0.5K0.5NbO3 and Na0.5K0.5NbO3 + 0.5 mol%MnO2 ceramics was investigated. Significant influence of the external stress on these properties was revealed. It includes a shif…
Influence of Compressive Stress on Dielectric and Ferroelectric Properties of the Na0. 5K0.5NbO3, Na0.5K0.5(Nb0.94Sb0.06)O3and Na0.5K0.5(Nb0.94Sb0.06…
2013
Good quality lead-free ceramics of Na0.5K0.5NbO3, Na0.5K0.5(Nb0.94Sb0.06)O3 and Na0.5K0.5(Nb0.94Sb0.06)O3 +0.5mol%MnO2 have been produced by a solid phase hot pressing sintering process at 1120–1145°C. The dependence of dielectric and ferroelectric properties on the uniaxial pressure (0–3000 bar) of the these samples was investigated, revealing a significant influence of the external stress on their properties. This includes a shift of the phase transition, a diffuseness of the permittivity characteristics, a change of the dielectric dispersion and a decrease of the polarization. We discuss our results based on hardening of the soft-mode and domain switching processes under applying of pres…
Child–display interaction:Lessons learned on touchless avatar-based large display interfaces
2020
AbstractDuring the last decade, touchless gestural interfaces have been widely studied as one of the most promising interaction paradigms in the context of pervasive displays. In particular, avatars and silhouettes have proved to be effective in making the touchless capacity of displays self-evident. In this paper, we focus on a child–display interaction approach to avatar-based touchless gestural interfaces. We believe that large displays offer an opportunity to stimulate children’s experiences and engagement; for instance, learning about art is very engaging for children but can bring a number of challenges. Our study aims to contribute to the literature on both pervasive displays and chi…
Investigationes on population dynamics and mortality of Phyllocnistis citrella in western Sicily (Italy)
2006
Population dynamics and mortality of P. citrella, and its natural enemies with parasitism levels in two different citrus orchards, sprayed and unsprayed, were investigated. The effect of host density on percentage parasitism and mortality was calculated by regression analyses. In both sites, over the 3-years period from 2002 to 2004, P. citrella was detected during the summer months and it was not found during the first flush. Population levels were low, never exceeding 3.0/leaf. P. citrella began to increase from June in 2002-2003 and from July in 2004. The monthly percentage parasitism of P. citrella in sprayed orchard fluctuated from 0 to 19%, while in unsprayed from 0 to 30%. High morta…
