Occurrence and Genesis of Palygorskite and Associated Clay Minerals in a Pleistocene Calcrete Complex, Sde Boqer, Negev Desert, Israel

AbstractPalygorskite and associated clay minerals have been studied in a Pleistocene calcrete complex from the Negev desert (Sde Boqer, Israel). This complex is divided into five main parts: the chalky and marly bedrock overlain by its weathered product, a brecciated calcrete hardpan; the laminar crust; loess pockets trapped in the calcrete; and the overlying soft surficial soil. The distribution of clay minerals is directly dependent on the position of the sample in the calcrete complex. Smectite is inherited from the bedrock in the calcrete with an aeolian enrichment in loess pockets and upper soft soil. The source of kaolinite is mainly detrital, related to desert dust. Deposits with unusually high Mn contents sampled at Monte Mangart in the Julian Alps include organic-rich marlstone and black shale with interbedded manganoan and siliceous limestone, which were deposited during the early Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event. Mn enrichment during that period has been related to global sea-level change coincident with increasing subsidence rate. The formation of Fe-Mn nodules, marking a hardground at the base of the Monte Mangart section, seems to be triggered by release of Mn from remote hydrothermal vents into a region of relatively elevated submarine topography where oxidizing conditions prevailed. Twelve published simple sequence repeat (SSR; microsatellite) markers, belonging to the ssrOeUA-DCA, GAPU and UDO series, were tested in a panel of 46 accessions of olive germplasm belonging to 30 unique cultivars collected in seven Provinces of Sicily. Four well-known reference olive cultivars were also added. The analysis was carried out on an automatic capillary sequencer using fluorescent dyes, and fragment sizes were determined using internal standards. Fatigue crack propagation from a cold-worked hole

Abstract The cold expansion process is widely used to enhance the fatigue life of structures with fastener holes. Various studies assert that the cold expansion improves the fatigue strength of fastener holes; however, the improvement of fatigue life is difficult to quantify. Therefore, the influence on fatigue life of cold-worked process was studied by numerical and experimental tests. Then, a parametric study on material hardening behavior and Bauschinger’s parameter was performed for several loading conditions in order to determine their effect on crack growth propagation. The results of the numerical tests have exhibited a good prediction of the fatigue life of the component.

Parallel Algorithms for Listing Well-Formed Parentheses Strings

We present two cost-optimal parallel algorithms generating the set of all well-formed parentheses strings of length 2n with constant delay for each generated string. In our first algorithm we generate in lexicographic order well-formed parentheses strings represented by bitstrings, and in the second one we use the representation by weight sequences. In both cases the computational model is based on an architecture CREW PRAM, where each processor performs the same algorithm simultaneously on a different set of data. Investigations of Surface Forces between Gypsum Microcrystals in Air Using Atomic Force Microscopy

This article introduces a new approach to the study of the interactions between gypsum faces in air. We have mounted a gypsum crystal on the end of a microcantilever to measure local forces (van der Waals, capillary forces, electrostatic) directly between two crystals. A systematic study with respect to the orientation of crystalline faces, relative humidity, and the duration of contact between crystals improves the understanding of the mechanism involved in the hardening of plaster in air.
