Analyzing long-term soil erosion in a ridge-shaped persimmon plantation in eastern Spain by means of ISUM measurements

Abstract Graft unions of cultivated plants have been used as passive bio-indicators to assess long-term soil erosion rates. By taking complementary topographical measures in inter-row areas, soil erosion can be more accurately estimated as done with the Improved Stock Unearthing Method (ISUM) in vineyards. As vines are not the only plants that are grafted, ISUM could be also applied to other crops. Exploring calibration strategies of the SEDD model in two olive orchard catchments

To optimize soil conservation strategies in catchments, it is required an accurate diagnosis of the areas contributing to soil erosion by using models such as SEDD (Sediment Delivery Distributed model). In this study, different calibration strategies of the SEDD model were explored to adapt its use in two olive catchments with different environmental features and managements. Capacity and Energy-Consumption Optimization for the Cluster-Tree Topology in IEEE 802.15.4

International audience; 802.15.4 proposes to use a cluster-tree hierar- chy to organize the transmissions in Wireless Sensor Networks. In this letter, we propose a framework to analyze formally the capacity and the energy consumption of this structure. We derive a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation to obtain a topology compliant with the standard. This formulation provides the optimal solution for the network capacity: this con- stitutes an upper bound for any distributed algorithms permitting to construct a cluster-tree. This framework can also be used to evaluate the capacity and to compare quantitatively different cluster-tree algorithms.

Mechanical Characterization of Polymers on a Nanometer Scale through Nanoindentation. A Study on Pile-up and Viscoelasticity

The analysis of nanoindentation force curves collected on polymers through the common Oliver and Pharr procedure does not lead to a correct evaluation of Young’s modulus. In particular, the estimated elastic modulus is several times larger than the correct one, thus compromising the possibility of a nanomechanical characterization of polymers. Pile-up or viscoelasticity is usually blamed for this failure, and a deep analysis of their influences is attempted in this work. Piling-up can be minimized by indenting on a true nanometer scale, i.e., at penetration depth smaller than 200 nm.
