Batteries for Aerospace: A Brief Review

This paper presents a brief overview on batteries for aerospace application. In particular, More Electric Aircraft (MEA) and All Electric Aircraft (AEA) concepts are introduced at first, together with their main advantages and drawbacks. Subsequently, opportunities and issues related to the employment of batteries on aircrafts are presented and briefly discussed. Reference is then made to aircraft power system architectures and battery technologies, as well as on the state-of-the-art of battery management systems, state-of-charge and state-of-health estimations, and thermal management.
Design and Implementation of an Ultra-Low Power Wake-up Radio for Wireless IoT Devices

In this paper, we present the design and prototype implementation of an ultra-low power wake-up radio for wireless IoT devices. The prototyped wake-up radio consumes only 580nA from 3V power supply, covers distance range of up to 55 meters and achieves a sensitivity of -49.5dBm. This wakeup radio module can easily be integrated into wireless IoT devices and thereby reducing the overall power consumption of the battery powered and energy harvesting based devices. The prolonged life time of the devices can reduce the overall costs when deployed in large scale.
Predicting the Batteries' State of Health in Wireless Sensor Networks Applications

[EN] The lifetime of wireless sensor networks deployments depends strongly on the nodes battery state of health (SoH). It is important to detect promptly those motes whose batteries are affected and degraded by ageing, environmental conditions, failures, etc. There are several parameters that can provide significant information of the battery SoH, such as the number of charge/discharge cycles, the internal resistance, voltage, drained current, temperature, etc. The combination of these parameters can be used to generate analytical models capable of predicting the battery SoH. Wireless Power Transmission for house appliances: A small-scale resonant coupling prototype

This paper presents a low cost prototype of wireless power transfer system based on resonant coupling. The system here proposed can be useful for house appliances battery charging systems: as a matter of fact, it consists mainly of two copper wire coils or windings, placed one in front of the other on the same axis. By exploiting the coils resonance coupling effect, electric energy can be transferred from the inductor coil to the receiver in order to charge the batteries. Low cost experimental tests demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed wireless power transfer prototype, being it capable to reach an efficiency of about 80% and more along a distance of 30 cm.
Battery technologies for electric vehicles

This chapter gives a brief overview of the following types of vehicles: battery electric vehicle (BEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). It then provides a comprehensive summary of the electrochemical energy storage including Ni-MH battery, Li-ion battery, and advanced rechargeable battery. Battery chemistry is explained in a detailed manner including an abbreviated modelling approach. Also, the issues of battery-charging method, management, and monitoring are addressed. The chapter concludes with a discussion on battery cell voltage balancing and temperature monitoring in addition to the battery state-of-charge (SOC) estimation.
A Measurement System for Power Inductors in Non-Linear Operating Conditions

The exploitation of power inductors in switching converters outside the linear region requires detailed information on the magnetization curve that often is not included among those usually available on their datasheets. This paper proposes an automatic system in which the inductor is characterized in real operating conditions taking into account also the core temperature. It is based on a switching converter suitably controlled by a virtual instrument. Numerical Simulation of Thermal Effects in Coupled Optoelectronic Device-circuit Systems

The control of thermal effects becomes more and more important in modern semiconductor circuits like in the simplified CMOS transceiver representation described by U. Feldmann in the above article Numerical simulation of multiscale models for radio frequency circuits in the time domain. The standard approach for modeling integrated circuits is to replace the semiconductor devices by equivalent circuits consisting of basic elements and resulting in so-called compact models. Parasitic thermal effects, however, require a very large number of basic elements and a careful adjustment of the resulting large number of parameters in order to achieve the needed accuracy.
