Haploid technology is a valuable plant breeding tool for obtaining homozygosity particularly in woody plants. Hazelnut, the world’s sixth ranking nut tree crop is a monoecious, anemophilous species. It is characterized by a sporophytic incompatibility system that prevents production of homozygous plants with conventional methods, involving several self-pollination cycles. Motivated by the need to predict how the Arctic atmosphere will change in a warming world, this article summarizes recent advances made by the research consortium NETCARE (Network on Climate and Aerosols: Addressing Key Uncertainties in Remote Canadian Environments) that contribute to our fundamental understanding of Arctic aerosol particles as they relate to climate forcing. Reproducibility of digital image analysis for measuring corneal haze after myopic photorefractive keratectomy.

Purpose To evaluate the usefulness of digital image analysis for quantifying corneal haze by determining the reproducibility of its measurements at the corneal plane. Methods In a prospective study, 20 randomly selected eyes that had undergone myopic photorefractive keratectomy were photographed focusing the slit beam on their anterior corneal surface. Each photograph was examined using computer image analysis techniques that detect the edge of the reticular pattern of the image. Direct Objective Quantification of Corneal Haze after Excimer Laser Photorefractive Keratectomy for High Myopia

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to measure regional distribution differences in corneal haze after excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy for high myopia. Methods: The authors developed computerized gradient edge detectors with which were analyzed digitized anterior slit-lamp photographs of 40 eyes, an average of 21.0 plus or minus 14.5 weeks after photorefractive keratectomy for high myopia (−6 to −22 diopters). Measuring corneal clouding in patients suffering from mucopolysaccharidosis with the Pentacam densitometry programme

Aim To identify a means to objectively measure corneal clouding in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis in a prospective controlled clinical trial. Methods Corneal haze was assessed by slit lamp examination and measured using the densitometry programme of the Pentacam, a rotating Scheimpflug camera in 33 mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) patients and 32 controls. Results Pentacam measurements were available in 31 right and 31 left eyes of 32 patients and in 32 left and right eyes of 32 subjects in the control group. Spatial distribution of the arctic haze aerosol size distribution in western and eastern Arctic

Abstract Since June 1993, four flight campaigns to the Arctic have been carried out by a group of scientists from Russia and Germany. Optical remote-sensing methods and in-situ chemical and aerosol measurements have been combined on board a Russian IL-18 research aircraft. From arctic air bases in Siberia, Alaska, Canada, and Spitsbergen, respectively, flights have been undertaken to determine spatial structure of arctic haze events. Measurements of aerosol and CCN properties in the Mackenzie River delta (Canadian Arctic) during spring–summer transition in May 2014

Within the framework of the RACEPAC (Radiation–Aerosol–Cloud Experiment in the Arctic Circle) project, the Arctic aerosol, arriving at a ground-based station in Tuktoyaktuk (Mackenzie River delta area, Canada), was characterized during a period of 3 weeks in May 2014. Basic meteorological parameters and particle number size distributions (PNSDs) were observed and two distinct types of air masses were found. Detection potential of the KM3NeT detector for high-energy neutrinos from the Fermi bubbles

A recent analysis of the Fermi Large Area Telescope data provided evidence for a high-intensity emission of high-energy gamma rays with a E-2 spectrum from two large areas, spanning 50 above and below the Galactic centre (the "Fermi bubbles"). A hadronic mechanism was proposed for this gamma-ray emission making the Fermi bubbles promising source candidates of high-energy neutrino emission. [1] Several ground-based telescopes followed the event of the Huygens probe descent through Titan's atmosphere (14 January 2005). We used the Nasmyth Adaptive Optics System Near-Infrared Imager and Spectrograph (NACO) adaptive optics system at the UT-4 of the Very Large Telescope in Chile to perform both spectroscopic and imaging measurements of Titan. We present here a selected sample of the spectra we acquired on 16 January 2005 in the K band between 2.03 and 2.40 μm. Our spectra include the Huygens landing site and surrounding dark and bright areas. We apply a radiative transfer code using new methane absorption coefficients calculated in the 2-μm region.
