The interval since first symptoms until diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma in the head and neck region is still a problem in southern Brazil.
2020
Background The aim was to examine the interval since first symptoms until final diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the head and neck region in southern Brazil. Material and Methods The individuals were prospectively selected and underwent anamnesis, physical examination and interview in the first medical consultation at a Cancer Hospital from south of Brazil. Results From 488 patients who underwent clinical examination, 105 were included in the study with diagnosis of SCC. Patients average interval from first symptoms to final diagnosis was 152 days (median 86; max:1105; min: 1), the average professional interval was 108 days (median: 97; max:525; min: 1) , and the average total …
Hörempfindungen im Ultraschallgebiet
1950
Tones between 15 and 200 kcycles are audible when applied by bone-conduction. The resulting sensation is to be observed not over the whole surface of the head and neck, but only over many points, of which early 60 have been investigated in cases of normally hearing persons of both sexes and middle age. The sensation is that of a very high tone and does not change according to frequency. The highest limit of hearing may lie near 200 kcycles. The reasons are discussed why hearing in this “ultrasonic” range seems to be a real one, which can be understood by observations ofGalambos andDavis on single nerve fiber-preparations.

Quality of life in irradiated patients with head and neck cancer: A preliminary study about the impact of prosthetic rehabilitation
2021
Background Oral quality of life is of great importance in head and neck cancer, where each patient combines functional, social and esthetic needs. Our study aimed to evaluate the influence of prosthetic and/or maxillofacial rehabilitation on patients’ perceived oral quality of life. Material and Methods The General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) was used in 28 patients with head and neck cancer who had undergone radiotherapy, recruited at La Timone University Hospital, Marseille, France, and who required prosthetic rehabilitation. The questionnaire was completed at three timepoints in the study: before insertion of the prosthesis (T0), then one week (T1) and three months after inserti…
Proteomic identification of the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein K as irradiation responsive protein related to migration
2014
Abstract Irradiation resistance is a major obstacle of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) therapy, limiting treatment success and patient survival. The aim of our experiments was to identify irradiation-regulated proteins as potential drug targets. Two established HNSCC cell lines (HNSCCUM-01T and HNSCCUM-02T) were treated with a single 8 Gy (Gray) fraction of irradiation. Changes in cellular protein expression were studied after 24 h by means of 2D-electrophoresis and MALDI–TOF-mass spectrometry. Ninety-four differentially expressed proteins were identified. The expression levels of four proteins were regulated similarly in both cell lines after irradiation treatment, i.e., GRP7…

AGuIX® from bench to bedside-Transfer of an ultrasmall theranostic gadolinium-based nanoparticle to clinical medicine.
2019
International audience; AGuIX® are sub-5 nm nanoparticles made of a polysiloxane matrix and gadolinium chelates. This nanoparticle has been recently accepted in clinical trials in association with radiotherapy. This review will summarize the principal preclinical results that have led to first in man administration. No evidence of toxicity has been observed during regulatory toxicity tests on two animal species (rodents and monkeys). Biodistributions on different animal models have shown passive uptake in tumours due to enhanced permeability and retention effect combined with renal elimination of the nanoparticles after intravenous administration. High radiosensitizing effect has been obser…
Improving management of patients with head and neck cancer
2022
The management of cancer patients aims at ensuring the best treatment for the patient but also a better preservation of his quality of life. In this thesis work, we aimed to highlight how the implementation of patient-reported parameters such as quality of life into management could contribute to improve the management of head and neck cancer patients. Our first work, which aimed to study the impact of routine assessment of health related quality of life based on data from 200 patients who received radiotherapy as first-line treatment included in a randomized phase 3 trial, showed that assessing health related quality of life in daily clinical practice could lead to a clinically relevant imp…
Evaluation of halitosis and sialometry in patients submitted to head and neck radiotherapy
2009
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the parameters of halitosis and sialometry in patients who had undergone head and neck radiotherapy, correlating oral concentration of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) with the presence of tongue coating, salivary flow rate and BANA test. Material and Methods: 35 patients allocated in two groups were examined: group I (control) - patients with systemic and oral health; group II - patients submitted to head and neck radiotherapy. All volunteers were submitted to halitosis measurements through a sulphide monitor, evaluation of tongue coating weight, non-stimulated sialometry and BANA test. Results: The results were analyzed through analysis …
