The cone of gaze

Gaze direction is an important cue that regulates social interactions. Although humans are very accurate in determining gaze directions in general, they have a surprisingly liberal criterion for the presence of mutual gaze. We first established a psychophysical task to measure the cone of gaze, which required observers to adjust the eyes of a virtual head to the margins of the area of mutual gaze. Then we examined differences between 2D, 3D, and genuine real life gaze. Finally, the tolerance for image distortions when the virtual head is not viewed from the proper vantage point was investigated. In recently popularized unattended wireless sensor networks, sensed data are stored locally or some designated nodes for a long term and retrieved sometime by collectors on demand. Such data may be delete or modified as sensor nodes are always exposed to risks such as random failure and mobile adversary. A Generic Approach to Scheduling and Checkpointing Workflows

This work deals with scheduling and checkpointing strategies to execute scientific workflows on failure-prone large-scale platforms. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to target fail-stop errors for arbitrary workflows. Most previous work addresses soft errors, which corrupt the task being executed by a processor but do not cause the entire memory of that processor to be lost, contrarily to fail-stop errors. We revisit classical mapping heuristics such as HEFT and MinMin and complement them with several checkpointing strategies. Estimating head pose and state of facial elements for sign language video

In this work we present methods for automatic estimation of non-manual gestures in sign language videos. More specifically, we study the estimation of three head pose angles (yaw, pitch, roll) and the state of facial elements (eyebrow position, eye openness, and mouth state). This kind of estimation facilitates automatic annotation of sign language videos and promotes more prolific production of annotated sign language corpora. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the absorbed dose to the eye lenses due to the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) system used to accurately position the patient during head-and-neck image guided procedures. The on-board imaging (OBI) systems (v.1.5) of Clinac iX and TrueBeam (Varian) accelerators were used to evaluate the imparted dose to the eye lenses and some additional points of the head. All CBCT scans were acquired with the Standard-Dose Head protocol from Varian. Doses were measured using thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs) placed in an anthropomorphic phantom.
