Abstract Background Addressing children`s and adolescents` health literacy is a bedrock for personal and societal growth, health and wellbeing over the life-course, and sustainable development in the WHO European Region and beyond. Does health literacy explain regional health disparities among adolescents in Finland?
2021
Health literacy (HL)—as a broad range of health-related competencies—has been proposed to be a promising construct in understanding health disparities better, also among adolescents. Several factors have been found to explain differences in adolescents’ HL levels; however, not much is known about how different regions of a country or majority/minority status is associated with HL, or whether HL is associated with regional health disparities. The aim of this study was to examine and compare HL and health levels among majority- and minority-language-speaking adolescents living in different regions of Finland, and to explore if HL explains regional health disparities, taking into account other…
Health literacy and its association with health outcomes among students in upper secondary education
2022
Abstract Background Health literacy (HL) - as a broad range of health-related competencies and skills- has been recognized as a determinant of health outcomes, and suggested to be a modifiable health resource and a factor contributing to empowerment and equity. Thus, there is a need to identify the state of HL in various population groups. The aim of this study was to investigate HL levels and associations between HL, physical activity and subjective health among students in general upper secondary and vocational Swedish-language schools in Finland. Methods The study used cross-sectional data from the Finnish LIITU-study among students in Swedish-speaking general upper secondary and vocatio…
Teachers' Knowledge and Stigmatizing Attitudes Associated With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Effectiveness of a Brief Educational Intervention
2021
Because children and adolescents are vulnerable to developing obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), classroom teachers play an important role in the early identification and intervention in students with OCD. The present study aims to explore the recognition of OCD, general knowledge about this disorder, implications in the classroom, and stigmatizing attitudes among teachers, as well as the effectiveness of a brief educational intervention about OCD. Participants (n = 95; mean age = 43. 29 years old; 64.3% female) were primary and secondary school teachers who were randomly assigned to an experimental group or a control group. All of them completed a set of self-report questionnaires, read …
2015
Fyysisellä aktiivisuudella on myönteisiä vaikutuksia fyysiseen, psyykkiseen ja sosiaaliseen terveyteen. Siten liikunnan harrastaminen on terveyttä merkittävästi edistävä elämäntapa. Nuorten kunto on heikentynyt ja elintapoihin liittyvien sairauksien määrä kasvanut. Tutkimukset osoittavat, että lapsena ja nuorena fyysisesti aktiivisesti elänyt ihminen on todennäköisesti aikuisenakin aktiivinen. Näiden seikkojen perusteella on tärkeää, että nuorten liikuntaan liittyvää terveysosaamista kehitetään peruskoulun jälkeenkin toisen asteen koulutuksessa. Tutkimuksen tarkoitus oli tarkastella liikuntaan liittyvän terveysosaaminen kehittämistä lukion terveystiedossa. Tutkimusaineisto koostui kuuden op…
