In the framework of the Beta Beams project, a molten fluoride target has been proposed for the production of the required 1013 18Ne/s. The production and extraction of such rates are predicted to be possible on a circulating molten salt with 160 MeV proton beams at close to 1 MW power. As a most important step to validate the concept, a prototype has been designed and investigated at CERN-ISOLDE using a static target unit. The target material consisted of a binary fluoride system, NaF:LiF (39:61 mol.%), with melting point at 649 °C. A method for the calculation of the heat transfer coefficient in potato drying

A method for the determination of the heat transfer coefficient was proposed for the first falling drying period of potato cubes. During this period, heat and mass transfer were considered as coupled phenomena. Temperature calculation inside the sample was performed using the macroscopic heat transfer balance. The heat transfer coefficient was computed by means of parametric identification, using the Gauss–Newton method. The figure obtained for the heat transfer coefficient shows good agreement with other sources.
Storm sewer pressurization transient – an experimental investigation

Pipe pressurization is examined experimentally by 144 laboratory experiments in a circular tilting pipe between two tanks, in which the transient was triggered by sudden closing of the downstream tank outlet. The experiments cover ranges of values of slope, velocity and filling ratio of the open-channel flow not explored in previous studies. Situations involving considerable air quantity and consequent intense pressure oscillations were also reproduced. Two different pressurization patterns, defined as “smooth” and “abrupt”, were observed, but only the abrupt pattern produced intense pressure oscillations. Thermal lensing in relaxor type ferroelectrics as a function of temperature has been investigated by using pulse/probe method. Enhanced thermo-optical (TO) properties had been observed in 3d elements (Cu, Co) doped PLZT ceramics and in sodium-bismuth titanate single crystals near phase transitions (PT). Comparison of TO signals for several doped PLZT materials reveals that 0.5 wt.% Cu doping is responsible for improved thermal lensing parameters interpreted by optimal light absorption, heat transfer and possible PT adjustment. A study of the photo-dielectric effect in ferroelectric SBN-75 ceramics of a broad phase transition under light of small intensity is reported. Relations determining kinetics of the infra-low frequency dielectric response under light and after illumination are obtained from experimental measurements revealing the features of the behaviour of relaxation time constants of the dielectric polarisation with temperature.
