Synthesis and biological activities of a new class of heat shock protein 90 inhibitors, designed by energy-based pharmacophore virtual screening

2013

The design through energy-based pharmacophore virtual screening has led to aminocyanopyridine derivatives as efficacious new inhibitors of Hsp90. The synthesized compounds showed a good affinity for the Hsp90 ATP binding site in the competitive binding assay. Moreover, they showed an excellent antiproliferative activity against a large number of human tumor cell lines. Further biological studies on the derivative with the higher EC50 confirmed its specific influence on the cellular pathways involving Hsp90.

Gli anfiteatri di Campania e Sicilia, 'pietre miliari' nella storia della tutela in età borbonica. Amphitheatres of Campania and Sicily, ‘milestones’…

2017

The contribution traces the research phases aimed at the study of the Greek-Roman Theater and the Odèon of Catania, at the characterization of the forms of degradation of the archaeological remains, and at the definition of a conservation project integrated by new architectures and by a re-functionalization program of the whole complex.

Anemia in non-celiac wheat sensitivity: Prevalence and associated clinical and laboratory features.

2022

Background: Patients suffering from non-celiac wheat sensitivity (NCWS) frequently report extra- intestinal symptoms, such as anemia. Aims: We investigated the prevalence and associated clinical features of anemia in NCWS patients. Methods: Data from 244 NCWS patients, diagnosed by double-blind placebo-controlled wheat challenge, were retrospectively reviewed and compared with 2 control groups (celiac disease (CD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)). Furthermore, 31 NCWS anemic patients were prospectively re-evaluated after at least 12 months on the “strict”wheat-free diet (WFD). Results: Anemia prevalence in NCWS patients was 34.8% (mean hemoglobin 10.4 ±1.4 g/dl), significantly higher tha…

Thermal resistance and upper lethal temperatures of underyearling Lake Inari Arctic charr

1997

Underyearling Arctic charr were acclimated to six temperatures between 6 and 21·5°C and thermal tolerance and resistance were tested after an acclimation period of at least 2 weeks. Resistance times were influenced by acclimation temperature and the highest upper incipient lethal temperature was 23–24°C. An upper limit for cultivation of Lake Inari charr is suggested to be 21°C which is the intercept of the function which represents the upper limit of the thermal tolerance zone.

Fractional-order constitutive equations in mechanics and thermodynamics

2019

This chapter is devoted to the application of fractional calculus in mechanics of materials and thermodynamics. The use of fractional calculus in mechanics is related to the definition of fractional-order constitutive equations leading to the class of fractional hereditariness. In this regard, a brief description of the classical rheological models of material hereditariness and a comparison with the fractional elements are reported. It is shown that a rheological hierarchy corresponding to the fractional order stress-strain relation may be defined. Such a model provides a multi-scale mechanical picture of the power-law hereditariness and it leads toward an unique definition of material fre…

Stress protein/peptide complexes derived from autologous tumor tissue as tumor vaccines.

1999

Vaccination of inbred mice with tumor-derived stress proteins hsp70, hsp90, and gp96/grp94 elicits a protective immunity to the tumor from which the vaccine was purified. There is now comprehensive experimental evidence that the antigenicity of tumor-derived hsp70, hsp90, and gp96 preparations results from diverse arrays of endogenous peptide antigens complexed with these stress proteins. Vaccination with tumor-derived stress protein/peptide complexes leads to their uptake and processing by professional antigen-presenting cells and to presentation of associated tumor peptide antigens to cytotoxic T cells. This induces a tumor-specific cytotoxic T cell response. The attractiveness of the con…

Thermodynamic and19F NMR studies of antimony trifluoride in water

1993

Densities, specific heat capacities per unit volume and enthalpies of dilution at 25°C and osmotic coefficients at 37°C were measured for antimony trifluoride in water as functions of concentration. From the first three properties the apparent and partial molar volumes, heat capacities and relative enthalpies were derived. As well, pH measurements in water at 25°C and19F NMR spectra in water and methanol at 33°C were also carried out. All the thermodynamic properties together with the chemical shifts abruptly change in the very dilute concentration region (<0.1m) and, then, tend to a constant value. These trends have been rationalized through a simple model based on an equilibrium of dissoc…

Omega-3 rich foods: Durum wheat spaghetti fortified with Portulaca oleracea

2020

Abstract Portulaca oleracea is an annual succulent herb (purslane) with high antioxidant properties and high content of essential ω-3 and ω-6 fatty acids, ascorbic acid, α-tocopherol and β-carotene. In the present study, sensorial and chemical analyses of uncooked and cooked durum wheat pasta fortified with purslane from three different Sicilian areas and at three different concentrations (5, 10 and 15%) were estimated. The sensorial analysis showed that the scores of the overall acceptance decreased considerably in pasta with 15% purslane, while consumers appreciated pasta samples with 10% purslane. Chemical analysis highlighted that the addition of purslane gave pasta samples the potentia…
