Grano duro biologico: i consigli varietali.
2019
Land area fractions and population fractions exposed to extreme climate impact events derived from ISIMIP2b output data
2020
This dataset contains the land area fractions and population fractions exposed ('le' for land exposed and 'pe' for population exposed) to the following six extreme climate impact events: crop failures (lec/pec), drought (led/ped), heatwaves (leh/peh), river floods (ler/per), tropical cyclones (let/pet) and wildfire (lew/pew). It is the data behind Lange et al., 2020. The data are provided on a global 0.5° grid and in annual time steps. It was derived from multi-model climate impacts simulations generated within the second round (ISIMIP2b, https://www.isimip.org/protocol/2b, Frieler et al., 2017) of the Intersectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP, https://www.isimip.org). The …
Analysis of Protected Accidental Transients in the EFIT Reactor With the RELAP5 Thermal-Hydraulic Code
2008
The European Facility for Industrial Transmutation (EFIT) is aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of transmutation process through the Accelerator Driven System (ADS) route on an industrial scale. The conceptual design of this reactor of about 400 MW thermal power is under development in the frame of the European EUROTRANS Integrated Project of the EURATOM Sixth Framework Program (FP6). EFIT is a pool-type reactor cooled by forced circulation of lead in the primary system where the heat is removed by steam generators installed inside the reactor vessel. The reactor power is sustained by a spallation neutron source supplied by a proton beam impinging on a lead target at the core centre. A …
Histopathological progression of hidradenitis suppurativa/acne inversa
2021
It is generally acknowledged that the first morphological change of hidradenitis suppurativa/acne inversa (HS/AI) consists of infundibular plugging of the folliculosebaceous apocrine apparatus, which is followed by acute and chronic inflammation, cysts with sinus formation, and fibrosis. Alternatively, it has been hypothesized that HS/AI is primarily a neutrophilic autoinflammatory disease and that the follicular plugging typical of this disease is secondary to inflammation. To review the sequence of the changes that mark the disease development, we have performed a histopathologic study on the surgical material from a series of axillary and inguinal/perineal cases. The histologic material fr…
A hemispherical dynamo model : Implications for the Martian crustal magnetization
2014
Abstract Mars Global Surveyor measurements revealed that the Martian crust is strongly magnetized in the southern hemisphere while the northern hemisphere is virtually void of magnetization. Two possible reasons have been suggested for this dichotomy: a once more or less homogeneously magnetization may have been destroyed in the northern hemisphere by, for example, resurfacing or impacts. The alternative theory we further explore here assumes that the dynamo itself produced a hemispherical field ( Stanley et al., 2008 , Amit et al., 2011 ). We use numerical dynamo simulations to study under which conditions a spatial variation of the heat flux through the core–mantle boundary (CMB) may yiel…
Surface soil humidity retrieval by means of a semi-empirical coupled SAR model
2010
In the last years, the availability of new technologies of Earth Observation encouraged researches to use integrated approaches for environmental monitoring. Even for agro-hydrological applications, remotely sensed data are available on wide areas allowing the retrieval of cost-effective and representative estimation of high spatial and temporal variability of the soil-vegetation system variables. In particular, soil water content plays an important role determining the partition of precipitation between surface runoff and infiltration and, moreover, influences the distribution of the incoming radiation between latent and sensible heat flux. As a consequence, distributed soil water content …
A New, Ecologically Self-Significant Metric of Species-Abundance Unevenness, Reliably Highlighting the Intensity of Interspecific Competition
2021
A wide series of commonly used metrics of abundance-evenness (or -unevenness) have been proposed to characterize synthetically the distributions of species-abundances, accounting for the hierarchic-like organization of species within natural communities. Among them, most – if not all–have been relevantly criticized on their serious limitations regarding both their “descriptive” and their “interpretative” capacities. From the descriptive point of view, many authors have already repeatedly emphasized the formal non-independenceof conventional (un-)evenness metrics with respect to species-richness, leading, in particular, to unacceptable bias when comparing communities differing by their speci…
The Evaluation of the Cultural Industries Impacts on the Local Economies: The Teatro Massimo Foundation
2022
Thanks to its relevant positive effects, the cultural industry, including the Opera Houses, is becoming increasingly important for economic and social well-being. On the other hand, given their cultural relevance and the high costs, these activities require the support of public funds. This evidence generates the need to quantify the economic benefits deriving from its activities to evaluate the opportunity and the return of the public financial support. The study analyses the case of the Fondazione Teatro Massimo di Palermo offering an estimate of the economic, occupational, and fiscal impact on the municipal, provincial, regional, and national territories. The results show how the Opera H…
Export intensity and the productivity gains of exporting
2013
This article analyses whether the productivity gains associated with Learning-by-Exporting (LBE) (controlling for self-selection) depend on the intensity of the firm's exporting activity. The results from a representative sample of Spanish manufacturing firms indicate that the yearly average gains in productivity are larger for those firms that increase their export-to-sales ratio.
