Modeling the influence of potassium content and heating rate on biomass pyrolysis

2017

This study presents a combined kinetic and particle model that describes the effect of potassium and heating rate during the fast pyrolysis of woody and herbaceous biomass. The model calculates the mass loss rate, over a wide range of operating conditions relevant to suspension firing. The shrinking particle model considers internal and external heat transfer limitations and incorporates catalytic effects of potassium on the product yields. Modeling parameters were tuned with experimentally determined char yields at high heating rates (>200 K s−1) using a wire mesh reactor, a single particle burner, and a drop tube reactor. The experimental data demonstrated that heating rate and potassium …

Promoting the Flexibility of Thermal Prosumers Equipped with Heat Pumps to Support Power Grid Management

2023

The increasing share of renewable energy sources in energy systems will lead to unpredictable moments of surplus/deficit in energy production. To address this issue, users with heat pumps can provide support to power grid operators through flexible unit operation achieved via Demand Response programs. For buildings connected to low-temperature heating networks with ensured third-party access, further room for flexibility can be explored by investigating the production of surplus heat that can be sold to the network. A key aspect lies in the identification of the energy pricing options that could encourage such flexible operation of a heat pump by “thermal prosumers”. To this aim…

The Risks of WiFi Flexibility: Enabling and Detecting Cheating

2013

Flexibility is an important paradigm for future WiFi networks. However, it also opens the possibility for diverse methods of cheating, which users can perform to increase their throughput. Therefore, it is important to develop the necessary tools to mitigate such efforts. In this paper we first discuss the risks of flexibility in terms of misbehaviour. We then propose an architecture to detect misbehaviour and react by punishing the cheaters. The proposed architecture utilizes advanced passive monitoring, flexible WiFi software, and appropriate reasoning to detect cheating. We validate its performance and discuss means of punishment

Impact of processing conditions on functionality of powders prepared from mixed protein system

2020

International audience; The projection of a global human population of around 9.5 billion by 2050 indicates that the demand for animal protein will double during this period. It seems therefore essential in regard to sustainability and food security to search for alternative protein sources that show nutritional and functional quality close to animal protein ones. In that respect, there is a growing interest in utilizing plant proteins as partial replacers of animal proteins in food. The reintroduction of plant proteins into our diet is a solution already envisaged by some vegetarian or flexitarian diets. In order to broaden this practice, one strategy is the use of protein mixes as an ingr…

Considerations about an indicator aimed at describing the energy efficiency of buildings with innovative envelope components at different climatic co…

2020

Green roofs are building components that have become increasingly common in urban contexts because other than the general improvement of the aesthetics of the buildings equipped with them, they have demonstrated to positively improve the building energy performance. Consequently, it would be useful for technicians to have easy and reliable indicators to achieve a synthetic quantitative judgement about the effectiveness of green roofs by an energy perspective compared to others building envelope technologies, for different climates. In sight of the definition of such an indicator, or at least of its properties, some considerations aimed at this purpose, especially concerning the use of new c…

Internal heat gain from different light sources in the building lighting systems

2017

EU directives and the Construction Law have for some time required investors to report the energy consumption of buildings, and this has indeed caused low energy consumption buildings to proliferate. Of particular interest, internal heat gains from installed lighting affect the final energy consumption for heating of both public and residential buildings. This article presents the results of analyses of the electricity consumption and the luminous flux and the heat flux emitted by different types of light sources used in buildings. Incandescent light, halogen, compact fluorescent bulbs, and LED bulbs from various manufacturers were individually placed in a closed and isolated chamber, and t…

Influence of axial mirror ratios on the kinetic instability threshold in electron cyclotron resonance ion source plasma

2022

International audience; Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source plasmas are prone to kinetic instabilities. The onset of the instabilities manifests as emission of microwaves, bursts of electrons expelled from the plasma volume, and the collapse of the extracted highly charged ion (HCI) currents. Consequently, the instabilities limit the HCI performance of ECR ion sources by limiting the parameter space available for ion source optimization. Previous studies have shown that the transition from stable to unstable plasma regime is strongly influenced by the magnetic field structure, especially the minimum field value inside the magnetic trap (Bmin). This work focuses to study the role o…

Laboratory medicine and sports : between Scylla and Charybdis

2012

Laboratory medicine is complex and contributes to the diagnosis, therapeutic monitoring and follow-up of acquired and inherited human disorders. The regular practice of physical exercise provides important benefits in heath and disease and sports medicine is thereby receiving growing focus from almost each and every clinical discipline, including laboratory medicine. Sport-laboratory medicine is a relatively innovative branch of laboratory science, which can provide valuable contributions to the diagnosis and follow-up of athletic injuries, and which is acquiring a growing clinical significance to support biomechanics and identify novel genomics and "exercisenomics" patterns that can help i…
