Sex differences in the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection: an individual participant data pooled analysis (StoP Project)

2019

Background Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is more frequent among men, though the magnitude of the association might be inaccurate due to potential misclassification of lifetime infection and publication bias. Moreover, infection is common, and most studies are cross-sectional. Thus, prevalence ratios (PRs) may be easier to interpret than odds ratios (ORs). Aim The aim of this study was to quantify the association between sex and H. pylori infection using controls from 14 studies from the Stomach Cancer Pooling (StoP) Project. Participants and methods H. pylori infection was defined based on IgG serum antibody titers or multiplex serology. Participants were also classified as infe…

Main RecommendationsPatients with chronic atrophic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia (IM) are at risk for gastric adenocarcinoma. This underscores the importance of diagnosis and risk stratification for these patients. High definition endoscopy with chromoendoscopy (CE) is better than high definition white-light endoscopy alone for this purpose. Virtual CE can guide biopsies for staging atrophic and metaplastic changes and can target neoplastic lesions. Biopsies should be taken from at least two topographic sites (antrum and corpus) and labelled in two separate vials. For patients with mild to moderate atrophy restricted to the antrum there is no evidence to recommend surveillance. In pati…

Novel Probiotic Bifidobacterium bifidum CECT 7366 Strain Active against the Pathogenic Bacterium Helicobacter pylori▿

2010

ABSTRACT Helicobacter pylori is considered one of the major risk factors underlying the development of gastritis and gastric and duodenal ulcers. Moreover, 50% of the population carries this bacterium, and consequently, when it is detected, eradication of H. pylori is strongly recommended. Regarding the use of probiotics as functional agents, several studies have shown that there is a direct relationship between the addition of certain probiotic bacteria and in vitro inhibition of H. pylori ; however, in vivo studies showing bifidobacterial activity against H. pylori remain scarce. In this study, a Bifidobacterium bifidum strain which proved active in vitro against H. pylori has been isolat…

Screening and Construction of Probiotic Strains with Enhanced Protective Properties against Intestinal Disorders

2011

Within the scope of the DEPROHEALTH project, a range of wild-type strains of Lactobacillus were analysed for their ability to interact with the host immune system. While the studied isolates interacted in a strain-specific way with immune cells, they seemed to have little and non-discriminative effect on epithelial cells. However, they were shown to facilitate the cross-talk between intestinal and immune cells. Studies conducted in mouse colitis models confirmed that specific strains possess higher intrinsic anti-inflammatory properties. Two of these were further engineered to produce murine IL10 and are presently being evaluated for their protective effect in a TNBS colitis model. Cell wal…

Complete Genome Sequence of “Candidatus Tremblaya princeps” Strain PCVAL, an Intriguing Translational Machine below the Living-Cell Status

2011

ABSTRACT The sequence of the genome of “ Candidatus Tremblaya princeps” strain PCVAL, the primary endosymbiont of the citrus mealybug Planococcus citri , has been determined. “ Ca . Tremblaya princeps” presents an unusual nested endosymbiosis and harbors a gammaproteobacterial symbiont within its cytoplasm in all analyzed mealybugs. The genome sequence reveals that “ Ca . Tremblaya princeps” cannot be considered an independent organism but that the consortium with its gammaproteobacterial symbiotic associate represents a new composite living being.

No association between Helicobacter pylori genotypes and antibiotic resistance phenotypes within families.

2002

Background. Triple therapy combining a proton pump inhibitor with two antibiotics, e.g. clarythromycin (CLR), metronidazole (MTZ) or amoxicillin (AMX), represents the standard in Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens. Resistance to antimicrobial agents, particularly MTZ (up to 56% in Western countries) and CLR (up to 15% in southern Europe), is frequently observed and may be associated with treatment failure [1]. Recently, several studies indicated that individual H. pylori colonies from a single anatomic site may not always yield identical genotypes, or the identical patterns of susceptibility to antibiotics [2–5]. Representative for every single patient we analyzed 27 H. pylori antrum …

Helicobacter pylori Infection in Type 1 Diabetes Children and Adolescents Using 13C Urea Breath Test

2014

There is a 10–30% prevalence of HP infection in the general pediatric population in Poland. This study aimed to determine its prevalence in T1DM children in Upper Silesia, Poland and estimate its influence on metabolic control of patients. We studied 149(82♀) children with T1DM (duration >12 months, mean HbA1c) and 298(164♀) age-matched controls. In all cases height and weight z-scores and Cole’s index were assessed. In T1DM patients additionally glycated hemoglobin A1c and T1DM duration were analyzed. Presence of HP infection was determined using 13C-isotope-labeled urea breath test (UBT) (fasting and 30min after ingestion 75 mg of 13C urea). HP infection was present in 17 (11.4%) T1DM pat…

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN HELYCOBACTER PYOLRI INFECTION AND PATHOLOGICAL ORAL MANIFESTATIONS

2016

DATA FROM LITERATURE ARE CONTROVERSAL REGARDING THE PRESENCE OF bELICOBACTER PYLORI (HP) IN DENTAL PLAQUE AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH GASTRIC INFECTION. oNE OF THE POSSIBLE MECHANISMS SUGGETSED FOR RE-INFECTION IS THE RECOLONIZATION WITH HP DENTAL PLAQUE. THE PURPOSE OF THIS REVIEW WAS TO DETERMINE WHETHER DENTAL PLAQUE, POOR ORAL HYGIENE, AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE WERE RISK FACTORS FOR HP INFECTION.
