These processes are associated with redistribution of cell-cell and cell-substrate adhesion molecules, cross talk between external ECM and internal cytoskeleton through focal adhesion molecules and the expression of several proteolytic enzymes, including matrix metalloproteases and serine proteases. This study assessed the comparative distribution and histotopology of nerve fibres immunoreactive for neural markers and a variety of regulatory active neuropeptides in the human anal canal by light microscopic immunohistochemistry. L-selectin is a cell adhesion molecule abundantly expressed on circulating neutrophils. For over two decades, neutrophil L-selectin has been assigned the exclusive role of supporting tethering and rolling – the initial stages of the multi-step adhesion cascade. Danshen, the dried root of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (Lamiaceae), is one of the most commonly used traditional Chinese medicines for cardiovascular indications. In EA.hy 926 cells, a cell line derived from human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), an aqueous extract of danshen, and also a methanol extract of the plant, increased eNOS promoter activity, eNOS mRNA and protein expression, as well as endothelial NO production. Glutamine and glutamate transport activities were measured in isolated luminal and abluminal plasma membrane vesicles derived from bovine brain endothelial cells. This study examined whether a clinically relevant concentration of the volatile anaesthetic halothane modifies the endothelium-dependent relaxation produced by acetylcholine (3 nM-10 microM), histamine (1 pM-0.1 microM) and anti-human immunoglobulin E (1:1000) in human isolated pulmonary arteries submaximally precontracted with noradrenaline.
