Role of oxidative and nitrosative stress biomarkers in chronic heart failure

In this review, we present recent insights on chronic heart failure (CHF) and the potential role of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukins, myeloperoxidase (MPO), and nitrosative stress in the progression of this disease process. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced as a consequence of aerobic metabolism. Under physiologic conditions, their unfavourable effect in causing oxidative damage is counteracted by antioxidants. An imbalance in favour of oxidants leads to oxidative stress, and contributes to myocyte apoptosis, direct negative inotropic effects, and reduced bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO). Heparin–polynitroxides: Synthesis and preliminary evaluation as cardiovascular EPR/MR imaging probes and extracellular space-targeted antioxidants

We report here the synthesis of heparin-polynitroxide derivatives (HPNs) in which nitroxide moieties are linked either to uronic acid or glycosamine residues of the heparin macromolecule. HPNs have low anticoagulant activity, possess superoxide scavenging properties, bind to the vascular endothelium/extra-cellular matrix and can be detected by EPR and MRI techniques. As the vascular wall-targeted redox-active paramagnetic compounds, HPNs may have both diagnostic (molecular MRI) and therapeutic (ecSOD mimics) applications.

Freeze-fracture features of epithelioid cells, multinucleated giant cells, and phagocytic macrophages

The freeze-fracture morphology of epithelioid cells, multinucleated giant cells (Langhans' type), and phagocytic macrophages was investigated. The intensely folded and interdigitating surface membranes of epithelioid cells and multinucleated giant cells displayed no specialized areas of cell contact. The size of the intramembranous particles (IMP) and the fact that the area density of IMPs was higher in the cytoplasmic (P) faces than in the external (E) faces of the cell membranes agreed with observations in other eukaryotic cells. A study of the neutron structure of the ground state of 7He has been performed by means of registration and analysis of the decay channels of the residual nuclei following absorption of stopped pions. In particular, the reactions 9Be(π−, d)X and 11B(π−, dd)X have been investigated where X denotes any system with five neutrons and two protons — the constituencies of a 7He nucleus. The results point out to the existence of a halo-like configuration of the ground state of 7He with all three neutrons outside of the alpha particle core. The helium-cooled pebble bed (HCPB) blanket is one of the two concepts proposed as a driver blanket for the European Union Demonstration Fusion Power Reactor (EU DEMO). In contrast to past conceptual design studies, in the frame of the current Power Plant Physics and Technology of the EUROfusion Consortium, the ongoing EU DEMO preconceptual design activities have adopted a holistic and integrated (i.e., systems engineering) design approach. A simple expression for electronic stopping force of heavy ions in solids

Abstract A simple expression for the electronic stopping force of heavy ions in solids is proposed based on an adaption of the Bohr’s classical stopping theory. A three-parameter model is constructed by using experimental data for helium, oxygen, argon, krypton and xenon ions in carbon, aluminum, nickel and gold targets at energies from 600 eV/u to 985 MeV/u. Total average agreements between the model and used experimental data are (−4.5 ± 47)% and (−1.6 ± 7.4)% at energies below and above the Bragg peak, respectively. The good overall agreement makes this model a good candidate for future development in stopping force prediction tools.

The Antiproton Decelerator of CERN began operation in 1999 to serve experiments for studies of CPT invariance by precision laser and microwave spectroscopy of antihydrogen ($\bar{\rm H}$) and antiprotonic helium ($\bar{p}{\rm He}^+$). The first 12 years of operation saw cold $\bar{\rm H}$ synthesized by overlapping clouds of positrons ($e^+$) and antiprotons ($\bar{p}$) confined in magnetic Penning traps. Cold $\bar{\rm H}$ was also produced in collisions between Rydberg positronium atoms and $\bar{p}$. Abstract The development of the IGISOL technique since its earliest beginnings at the University of Jyvaskyla in the early '80s is reviewed. The processes involved in ion survival in the ion guide are discussed. The design and performance of ion guides for different types of reactions is summarised. The mass-separated beam quality for different skimmer systems is compared.
