Experimental Stark-broadening studies of the NI multiplet $\mathsf{(^{1}D) 3s^{2}D - (^{1}D)3p^{2}P^{o}}$ at 7904.5

2004

Experimental Stark-broadening studies of the NI multiplet $(^{1}{\rm D})3s$ $^{2}{\rm D} - (^{1}{\rm D})3p$ $^{2}{\rm P}^{\rm o}$ are reported. Line shape measurements were performed using a wall-stabilized arc operated at atmospheric pressure in helium with small amounts of nitrogen and hydrogen. The radiation of the plasma emitted from nearly homogeneous plasma layers in end-on direction was measured using a grating spectrometer equipped with a charge-coupled device (CCD) detector. The arc current was varied from 35 to 50 A in order to obtain different plasma conditions (electron densities and temperatures). The so-called j(x) profiles of Griem, convoluted with the corresponding Doppler a…

Ordered helium trapping and bonding in compressed arsenolite: Synthesis ofAs4O6·2He

2016

Compression of arsenolite has been studied from a joint experimental and theoretical point of view. Experiments on this molecular solid at high pressures with different pressure-transmitting media have been interpreted thanks to state-of-the-art ab initio calculations. Our results confirm arsenolite as one of the most compressible minerals and provide evidence for ordered helium trapping above 3 GPa between adamantane-type $\mathrm{A}{\mathrm{s}}_{4}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ cages. Our calculations indicate that, at relatively small pressures, helium establishes rather localized structural bonds with arsenic forming a compound with stoichiometry $\mathrm{A}{\mathrm{s}}_{4}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}\ifmmode\c…

Coherent photoproduction of η-mesons off 3He – search for η-mesic nuclei

2012

Coherent photoproduction of $\eta$-mesons off $^3$He, i.e. the reaction $\gamma ^3{He}\rightarrow \eta ^3{He}$, has been investigated in the near-threshold region. The experiment was performed at the Glasgow tagged photon facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the combined Crystal Ball - TAPS detector. Angular distributions and the total cross section were measured using the $\eta\rightarrow \gamma\gamma$ and $\eta\rightarrow 3\pi^0\rightarrow 6\gamma$ decay channels. The observed extremely sharp rise of the cross section at threshold and the behavior of the angular distributions are evidence for a strong $\eta {^3{He}}$ final state interaction, pointing to the existence of a resonant …

The key reactions in Stellar helium burning: 12C(α,γ)16O and 22Ne(α,n)25Mg

2003

Abstract The excitation functions of 12C(α,γ)16O and 22Ne(α,n)25Mg have been determined with a yet unequaled experimental sensitivity of 10−11 b. From γ-angular distributions the SE1-and SE2-factors for 12C(α,γ)16O have been deduced and extrapolated into the range of helium burning temperatures using the R-matrix method. An improved reaction rate has been calculated: NA〈σν〉=(7.9±2.5)x10−15cm3(mols)−1 at T9 = 0.2. For a more precise extrapolation the excitation function has to be measured with better statistics. Therefore a new experiment on 12C(α,γ)16O with a better suited setup has been started recently. The accuracy of the 22Ne(α,n)25Mg reaction rate could be improved considerably compare…

Probing Rydberg atoms through collisions with helium in the presence of static electric and magnetic fields

2005

We report on field induced inelasticity effects in state-to-state transitions caused by collisions of helium with Rydberg atoms in the presence of parallel static electric and magnetic fields. Due to the phases accumulated by the wavefunctions of the states involved into the collision events, the transition cross sections plotted as a function of the external fields exhibit modulations. When the relative velocity of the colliding atoms is high enough, these modulations are wiped out, while sizable modifications of the cross sections may take place due to the alteration of the wavefunctions' spatial localization. The possibility of using the field-assisted collisions as a probe giving inform…

Coupling of heat flux and vortex polarization in superfluid helium

2020

We consider a macroscopic description of the mutual influence between heat flux and vortex polarization in superfluid helium, in which the vortices produce a lateral deviation of the heat flux, and the heat flux produces a lateral drift of vortices. This coupling is a consequence of a microscopic Magnus force and mutual friction force between the vortices and the flow of excitations carrying the heat. We keep track of these effects with simplified macroscopic equations, and we apply them to second sound propagation between rotating concentric cylinders and to spatial distribution of polarization across a rectangular channel with vortices polarized orthogonally to the channel in the presence…

The T[sub z] = −1→ T[sub z] =0 beta decays and comparison with Charge Exchange reactions

2011

Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions can be studied in both β decay and charge exchange (CE) reactions. If isospin is a good quantum number, then the Tz = −1→0 and Tz = +1→0 GT mirror transitions, are identical. Therefore, a comparison of the results from studies of β decay and CE should shed light on this assumption. Accordingly we have studied the β decay of the Tz = −1 fp‐shell nuclei, 54Ni, 50Fe, 46Cr, and 42Ti, produced in fragmentation and we have compared our results with the spectra from (3He, t) measurements on the mirror Tz = +1 target nuclei studied in high resolution at RCNP, Osaka. The β decay experiments were performed as part of the STOPPED beam RISING campaign at GSI.

Determination of the helium-4 mass in a Penning trap

2001

We have measured the cyclotron frequencies of He+, H+ 2 and D+ 2 ions in a room temperature Penning trap. The resonances were detected destructively by a time-of-flight technique. The statistical uncertainty of the resonance frequencies was generally below 1 ppb. A detailed account of measures to minimize systematic frequency shift is presented. Using the accepted values for the proton and deuteron mass we obtain a value for the 4He mass: M(4 He) = 4.0026032489(22) (0.5 ppb). It is in agreement with the accepted value.
