Prevalence of human parvovirus B19 in blood donors as determined by a haemagglutination assay and verified by the polymerase chain reaction

2002

Background and Objectives Transmission of human parvovirus B19 (PV B19) by transfusion of blood and blood products is well documented. Although PV B19 infection is connected with severe complications in some recipients, donor screening is not yet mandatory. In this study the prevalence of PV B19, as detected by a haemagglutination assay (the Human PV B19 Antigen-Test), was assessed. In addition, the persistence of B19 DNA and the serological status of blood donors was also assessed. The specificity and utility of the Human PV B19 Antigen-Test for donor screening was investigated and compared with other screening strategies. Materials and Methods The prevalence of PV B19 viraemia was assesse…

Single dose vaccination with AS03-adjuvanted H5N1 vaccines in a randomized trial induces strong and broad immune responsiveness to booster vaccinatio…

2009

Priming a population with a pre-pandemic vaccine is being considered to maximize the response upon subsequent vaccination with a true pandemic vaccine more closely matched to the causative pandemic strain. The present study explored this prime-boost concept by evaluating different primary schedules with the pre-pandemic A/Vietnam/1194/2004(NIBRG-14) vaccine, containing 3.75 microg of HA, followed by a 6-month booster with a vaccine formulated with 3.75 microg HA of either the same strain or with A/Indonesia/05/2005(IBCDC-RG2), a heterologous strain from a different clade. In this multicentre, open, randomized study (NCT00430521) we measured immune responses in four groups (N = 48-60) of adu…

Sugar specific cellular lectins of Phallusia mamillata hemocytes: Purification, characterization and evidence for cell surface localization

1989

Cellular lectins (CLs) of Phallusia mamillata were demonstrated in protein preparations obtained by salt fractionation from hemocytes sonicated in a suitable medium. Since the lectins from the precipitated fraction bind sugars containing D-galactosyl groups, they were purified by affinity chromatography on Sepharose. SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions showed that CLs are formed of two components of apparent MWs approximately 36,900 and 35,090 and thus differ from serum lectins (SLs) (MW about 62,200). The "shrinkage" observed when SLs were examined under nonreducing conditions suggest the presence of intrachain disulphide bonds which can affect the molecular structure of the SLs. CL-SL diff…

An assessment of prime‐boost vaccination schedules with AS03A‐adjuvanted prepandemic H5N1 vaccines: a randomized study in European adults

2012

Please cite this paper as: Gillard et al. (2012) An assessment of prime‐boost vaccination schedules with AS03A‐adjuvanted prepandemic H5N1 vaccines: a randomized study in European adults. Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses DOI: 10.1111/j.1750‐2659.2012.00349.x. Background  Long‐term persistence of immune response and safety of an H5N1 prepandemic influenza vaccine adjuvanted with AS03 (an α‐tocopherol oil‐in‐water emulsion‐based adjuvant system) was evaluated using various prime‐boost schedules that mimicked potential pandemic scenarios (NCT00430521). Methods  Five hundred and twelve healthy adults aged 18–60 years received primary vaccination with one or two doses (0, 21 days schedule…

A novel galactose- and arabinose-specific lectin from the sponge Pellina semitubulosa: isolation, characterization and immunobiological properties.

1992

A new lectin from the sponge Pellina semitubulosa is derived which was extracted and purified to homogeneity. The purified lectin is probably a hexamer of polypeptide chains (each M(r) 34,000) which are covalently linked via disulfide linkages; the isoelectric point is 6.1. The lectin displays the following specificities: D-galactose (50% inhibition of hemagglutination at 0.2 mM) = L-arabinose (0.2 mM) greater than D-fucose (1.5 mM) greater than D-glucose (3.0 mM). It precipitates human erythrocytes (A1, A2, A1B, B, and O) with a titer between 2(8) and 2(11) and erythrocytes from sheep and rabbits with a titer between 2(5) and 2(10). The Pellina lectin displays a strong mitogenic effect on …

Arthus type inflammation with rat immunoglobulins.

1971

Circulating diphtheria antitoxin levels in children aged 11-14 years in relation to the vaccinal history.

1991

Diphtheria antitoxin level in serum samples obtained from 204 healthy children aged 11-14 years was determined by means of an indirect haemagglutination technique and related to the vaccinal history of the subjects. Irrespective of the time since the last toxoid inoculation, the mean antitoxin titre per ml of serum in the individuals who had received incomplete/irregular anti-diphtheria vaccination in childhood was significantly higher when the number of toxoid doses was higher (from two to more than four doses); the same was not observed for individuals given primary vaccination (three toxoid doses) according to the schedule for childhood vaccination in Italy (regular vaccinees) and one or…

Purification and partial characterization of a lectin protein complex, the clathrilectin, from the calcareous sponge Clathrina clathrus

2016

Carbohydrate-binding proteins were purified from the marine calcareous sponge Clathrina clathrus via affinity chromatography on lactose and N-acetyl glucosamine- agarose resins. Proteomic analysis of acrylamide gel separated protein subunits obtained in reducing conditions pointed out several candidates for lectins. Based on amino- acid sequence similarity, two peptides displayed homology with the jack bean lectin Concanavalin A,
including a conserved domain shared by proteins in the L-type lectin superfamily. An N-acetyl glucosamine - binding protein complex, named clathrilectin, was further purified via gel filtration chromatography, bioguided with a diagnostic rabbit erythrocyte haemag…
