770 Risk Factors Associated with Anemia and Nutritional Status in Infants
2012
Background Growth assessment is an integral part of infants health. An understanding of anemia risk factors is essential to identify the groups that are more vulnerable. The Aim of the study was to identify the risk factors for malnutrition in the vulnerable age group of 6 to 12 months and to evaluate possible related risk factors with anemia. Methods The cross-sectional study which evaluated 206 infants aged between 6–12 months who attended the Pediatric Clinic during the years 2010–2011 for inadequate growth. Mothers were interviewed to collect informations regarding socioeconomic status and nutrition practices. Nutritional status was evaluated by anthropometric measurements using growth …

Development Of a Disease Specific Quality Of Life Questionnaire For Patients With Aplastic Anemia and/Or Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (QLQ-AA/…
2013
Abstract Introduction Acquired Aplastic Anemia (AA) and Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH) are ultra-rare diseases with a yearly incidence 2 to 4 per million (AA) and of 1.3 to 2 per million (PNH. While much is known about pathophysiology and treatment of these interrelated diseases, less is known about patients (pts.) psycho-social issues. Quality of life (QoL) evaluation tools used in all studies for AA and PNH are rather unspecific and were initially designed for cancer patients (e.g. the European Organization of Research and Treatment (EORTC) QLQ-C30). Given the complexity of AA and PNH, the variation in symptoms and different treatment approaches (immunosuppression, bone marrow …
Oxygen exchange in the erythrocyte
1969
Oxidized respiratory molecules induced in vivo by nitrite in Pontodrilus littoralis (oligochaeta)
1992
Abstract 1. The in vivo effect of nitrite has been investigated in Pontodrilus littoralis. 2. Exposure of the animals at nitrite concentrations (0.05–0.1%) produced methaemoglobin and hemichromes. 3. Disappearance of oxidized forms was obtained when normal rearing conditions were restored. 4. Longer exposure to higher nitrite concentrations produced irreversible oxidized forms.
Time scale of protein aggregation dictated by liquid-liquid demixing
2003
The growing impact of protein aggregation pathologies, together with the current high need for extensive information on protein structures are focusing much interest on the physics underlying the nucleation and growth of protein aggregates and crystals. Sickle Cell Hemoglobin (HbS), a point-mutant form of normal human Hemoglobin (HbA), is the first recognized and best-studied case of pathologically aggregating protein. Here we reanalyze kinetic data on nucleation of deoxy-HbS aggregates by referring them to the (concentration-dependent) temperature Ts characterizing the occurrence of the phase transition of liquid-liquid demixing (LLD) of the solution. In this way, and by appropriate scalin…
Unveiling the timescale of the R-T transition in human hemoglobin.
2010
Time-resolved wide-angle X-ray scattering, a recently developed technique allowing to probe global structural changes of proteins in solution, was used to investigate the kinetics of R-T quaternary transition in human hemoglobin and to systematically compare it to that obtained with time-resolved optical spectroscopy under nearly identical experimental conditions. Our data reveal that the main structural rearrangement associated with the R-T transition takes place approximately 2 mus after the photolysis of hemoglobin at room temperature and neutral pH. This finding suggests that the 20-mus step observed with time-resolved optical spectroscopy corresponds to a small and localized structural…
Zur Dissoziation des Human-Hmoglobins
1969
Thrombotic risk in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria-like (PNH-like) phenotype
2020
The complement system is an essential component of the innate immune defence that, if overly activated, may damage organs and tissues. For this reason, there is a fine complement regulatory system. The complement modulation system includes two proteins with important regulatory activity, CD55 or decay accelerating factor (DAF) and CD59 or membrane inhibitor of reactive lysis (MIRL). The paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a clonal and non-neoplastic disease characterized by intravascular haemolysis, occurrence of thrombosis and bone marrow failure. In clinical practice, in opposition to PNH, a variety of pathological conditions have been observed with an acquired and non-genetic de…
Hypoxia induces a complex response of globin expression in zebrafish (Danio rerio).
2006
SUMMARY Unlike most mammals, many fish species live and survive in environments with low or changing levels of oxygen. Respiratory proteins like hemoglobin or myoglobin bind or store oxygen, thus enhancing its availability to the respiratory chain in the mitochondria. Here we investigate by means of quantitative real-time PCR the changes of hemoglobin, myoglobin, neuroglobin, cytoglobin and globin X mRNA in zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to mild (PO2=∼8.6 kPa) or severe(PO2=∼4.1 kPa) hypoxia. Neuroglobin and myoglobin protein levels were investigated by western blotting. Whereas mild hypoxia caused only minor changes of mRNA levels, strong hypoxia enhanced mRNA levels of the control genes (…
