<title>Micro-Raman scattering and infrared spectra of hemoglobin</title>
2008
Confocal micro-Raman and FT-IR spectroscopies have been used for detection of radiation influence of hemoglobin of patients examined by radio-isotopes diagnosis (Tc99m). After irradiation we observed some little changes of the Raman scattering bands which connected with out of plane porphyrine bending vibrations, also we observed additional band due to methemoglobin. Radiation of blood lead to the transition from hemoglobin (Fe2+) to methemoglobin (Fe3+) with a delocalization of iron from porphyrine plane. It was shown that FT-IR spectra indicate the radiation effects on hemoglobin.© (2008) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Downloading of the abstract is per…
Globins and hypoxia adaptation in the goldfish, Carassius auratus
2008
Goldfish (Carassius auratus) may survive in aquatic environments with low oxygen partial pressures. We investigated the contribution of respiratory proteins to hypoxia tolerance in C. auratus. We determined the complete coding sequence of hemoglobin α and β and myoglobin, as well as partial cDNAs from neuroglobin and cytoglobin. Like the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), C. auratus possesses two paralogous myoglobin genes that duplicated within the cyprinid lineage. Myoglobin is also expressed in nonmuscle tissues. By means of quantitative real-time RT-PCR, we determined the changes in mRNA levels of hemoglobin, myoglobin, neuroglobin and cytoglobin in goldfish exposed to prolonged hypoxia (48…
Is diabetes the cost to pay for a greater cardiovascular prevention?
2010
The recent JUPITER (Justification for the Use of statins in Primary prevention: an Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin) trial is another study providing evidence about the effectiveness of statin therapy in reducing cardiovascular risk. Yet, in this study significantly higher glycated hemoglobin levels and incidence rates of diabetes were observed in persons treated with rosuvastatin than the placebo group. It should be noted that adverse effects on glucose metabolism have already been reported, albeit rarely, in previous trials with statins. Although the exact mechanisms involved are unknown, it seems that statins may deteriorate glycemic control by decreasing different metabolites,…
The differential effects of thiazolidindiones on atherogenic dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetes: what is the clinical significance?
2008
Diabetic dyslipidemia is typically characterized by an increase in plasma triglycerides, a decrease in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and a concomitant increase in atherogenic small dense low-density lipoproteins. Thiazolidindiones are able to lower the levels of fasting glucose and glycated hemoglobin significantly by improving insulin sensitivity, as well as improving some aspects of diabetic dyslipidemia: total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol tend to increase while triglycerides are generally decreased. This paper reviewed the effects of pioglitazone and rosiglitazone on atherogenic diabetic dyslipidemia, in particular on sma…
Iron deficiency and long-term mortality in elderly patients with acute coronary syndrome.
2018
Aim: We evaluated the relationship between iron deficiency (ID) and long-term mortality risk in elderly patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Methods: In this prospective observational study, we included 252 patients older than 65 years with ACS. Transferrin saturation (TSAT) and ferritin were collected before discharge. Results: Mean age, hemoglobin and GRACE score were 78 ± 7 years, 12.4 ± 1.8 g/dl and 138.8 ± 25.3, respectively, 112(44.4%) patients were women, and 151(59.9%) presented ID. During the follow-up, 121 (48%) patients died. Mortality rates among TSAT quartiles were: 2.38, 1.60, 0.90 and 0.95 × 10 person-years for Q1TSAT to Q4TSAT, respectively (p < 0.001) and did no…
The effects of rapid weight loss on skeletal muscle in judo athletes
2020
Abstract Objective To observe the effect of rapid weight loss (RWL) methods over 3 days on muscle damage in judokas. Methods Eighteen judokas participated in this crossover study, meaning that judo athletes were subjected to exercise-only phase (4 days) and RWL phase (3 days). Subjects were tested for myoglobin, creatine kinase, aldolase, hemoglobin, and hematocrit values on seven consecutive days. These biomarkers served as indicators of acute muscle damage. Results During the exercise-only phase, no significant changes were observed. Myoglobin (Mb) (p < 0.001), creatine kinase (CK) (p < 0.001) and aldolase (ALD) (p < 0.001) significantly increased only during the RWL phase, as we…

Different effects of pioglitazone and rosiglitazone on lipid metabolism in mouse cultured liver explants.
2010
Background Pioglitazone (PIO) and rosiglitazone (ROSI) are widely used as oral antidiabetic agents for treatment of type 2 diabetes. Although these medications exert similar effects on blood glucose, recent clinical studies indicated that PIO has a more pronounced beneficial effect on lipid parameters than ROSI. In order to get further insight into the lipid effects of both drugs, we tested whether PIO, compared to ROSI, could exert direct effects on lipid liver metabolism in relation with plasma lipids. Methods We performed in vitro studies using mice liver slices incubated 21 h either with ROSI (1 µmol/L) or PIO (7.5 µmol/L). Results We showed that both glitazones slightly reduced HMG-CoA…
The Impact of Perioperative Blood Transfusion on Survival of Bladder Cancer Patients Submitted to Radical Cystectomy: Role of Anemia Status.
2016
Background The prognostic role of perioperative blood transfusion (PBT) in patients who underwent radical cystectomy (RC) for bladder cancer (BCa), although supported by clinical evidence, still remains to be assessed definitively. Objective To investigate the impact of PBT on RC patients for overall survival and after stratifying according to preoperative anemia status and to define whether the oncologic impact may be assumed to be a primary effect of PBT or attributed to the reduced preoperative hemoglobin (Hb) level. Design, setting, and participants A total of 1490 consecutive patients with nonmetastatic BCa who underwent RC and pelvic lymph node dissection between January 1990 and Augu…
Epidemiología de la transfusión sanguínea en los Servicios de Medicina Intensiva en España: «Transfusion Day»
2022
Objective To describe the transfusion practice in the ICUs in Spain, according to national and international recommendations (guidelines).DesignProspective, cross-sectional, multi-centre study.ScopeData collection was carried out by means of a questionnaire sent electronically to the Heads of Service of 111 ICUs in Spain.Participants1,448 patients were included, aged 61.8 (SD 15.7) years, 66.2% male, with an SOFA of 4.7 ± 3.8 and average stay of 10.62 ± 17.49 days.VariablesDemographic and clinical variables of the patients were collected, as well as variables related to the transfusion act.ResultsOf the 1,448 patients, 9.9% received al least one transfusion of any blood product, 3.7% fresh …
