How to escape from insect egg parasitoids: A review of potential factors explaining parasitoid absence across the Insecta: Escape from insect egg par…
2020
The egg is the first life stage directly exposed to the environment in oviparous animals, including many vertebrates and most arthropods. Eggs are vulnerable and prone to mortality risks. In arthropods, one of the most common egg mortality factors is attack from parasitoids. Yet, parasitoids that attack the egg stage are absent in more than half of all insect (sub)orders. In this review, we explore possible causes explaining why eggs of some insect taxa are not parasitized. Many insect (sub)orders that are not attacked by egg parasitoids lack herbivorous species, with some notable exceptions. Factors we consider to have led to escape from egg parasitism are parental egg care, rapid egg deve…
Integrating natural enemies and semiochemicals in cultural control for an effective IPM
2012
Since their discovery, many semiochemicals (behavior modifying chemicals) have been identified and synthetized, and a number of techniques have been developed to use them in integrated pest management (IPM) programs against insect pests. In particular, the uses of semiochemicals in IPM to monitor insect pest populations and to interfere with their behavior preventing agricultural damage are widely adopted by the growers. In the same time, evidences that semiochemicals can also modify the behavior of insect natural enemies inspired researchers to explore the possibility to use semiochemicals to conserve and/or enhance the efficacy of natural enemies in cropping systems. However the use of se…

TAXONOMIC, ECOLOGICAL AND CHOROLOGICAL REMARKS ON CLINOPODIUM MINAE (LAMIACEAE), CRITICAL AND RARE PLANT OF THE SICILIAN FLORA
2017
In a previous contribution (1) the finding in the wild of Clinopodium minae (Lojac.) Peruzzi & F.Conti [Bas. Calamintha minae Lojac.], a critical species close to Clinopodium corsicum (Pers.) Govaerts and well distinct from Clinopodium alpinum (L.) Kuntze subsp. nebrodense (A.Kern. & Strobl) Bartolucci & F.Conti was reported. It is a critical taxon, described by Lojacono, author of the most extensive work on the Sicilian flora (2) based on the examination of the collections of the Herbarium of Palermo (PAL!) (3). In the above cited note, the specific characters as well as the taxonomic relationships with other taxa were highlighted. At the same time, the location of a small population of C.…

Nomenclatural notes on the Polycarpon tetraphyllum aggregate (Caryophyllaceae)
2015
Nomenclatural notes on the aggregate Polycarpon tetraphyllum (Caryophyllaceae) are discussed. The names Hagaea alsinifolia, H. polycarpoides, Poycarpon colomense, P. diphyllum, and P. floribundum are typified, respectively, on an iconography by Boccone (lectotype), and specimens preserved in PAL (neotype), JE (lectotype), MA (Herbarium Cavanilles, lectotype), and COI (Herbarium Willkomm, lectotype). For the nomenclatural purposes, the names P. bivonae (nom. nov. pro P. polycarpoides), P. herniarioides (holotype in K), P. peploides (nom. superfl. et nom. illeg. according to the Arts. 52.1 and 52.2 of the ICN), P. polycarpoides subsp. catalaunicum (holotype in BC), and P. rotundifolium (holot…
From common and used to rare and forgotten: Past and present distribution of the archaeophyte Euphorbia lathyris L. (Euphorbiaceae) in southern Italy…
2019
Our study aimed at clarifying the current and previous occurrence, distribution and status (native vs. introduced) of Euphorbia lathyris L., the caper spurge, in S Italy and Sicily: most of the recent Italian floras and checklists, in fact, do not report this species for this area. To do this, a multi-disciplinary research was carried out taking into account not only botanical but also ethnobotanical and dialectological sources and a survey of the main herbaria of central and southern Italy. Our results point out that E. lathyris was much more frequent, well-known and commonly used in the whole southern Italy and in Sicily until 2-3 centuries ago, and that it probably experienced isolated c…
Su un erbario del XVII secolo conservato presso il Museo Regionale di Messina: Stato di conservazione e proposte per il recupero e la salvaguardia
2013
In this article the conservation status of a XVII Century herbarium from Messina is assessed. This herbarium is attributed to Pietro Castelli, the founder of the Botanical garden of Messina or, most probably, to a pupil of him. It consists of a single volume of 214 pages and is housed in the library od the Museum “Maria Accascina” in Messina. The large part of the specimens stay in poor conditions. Hypothesis for recovery and preservation both in short and long term of this precious heritage are given.
