Krill herd algorithm-based neural network in structural seismic reliability evaluation

2018

ABSTRACTIn this research work, the relative displacement of the stories has been determined by means of a feedforward Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model, which employs one of the novel methods for the optimization of the artificial neural network weights, namely the krill herd algorithm. For the purpose of this work, the area, elasticity, and load parameters were the input parameters and the relative displacement of the stories was the output parameter. To assess the precision of the feedforward (FF) model optimized using the Krill Herd Optimization (FF-KH) algorithm, comparison of results has been performed relative to the results obtained by the linear regression model, the Genetic Alg…

Herding in the cryptocurrency market: CSSD and CSAD approaches

2018

Abstract We analyse the existence of herding in the cryptocurrency market through the cross-sectional standard (absolute) deviation of returns. Our results show that extreme dispersion of returns is explained by rational asset pricing models although it is possible to observe herding during down markets, which highlights the inefficiency and risk of cryptocurrencies. We also observe that the smallest digital currencies are herding with the largest ones, thus traders base their decisions on the performance of the main cryptocurrencies. However, the herding phenomenon cannot be solely attributed to Bitcoin, since the rest of the market is not herding with the main cryptocurrency.

‘Where the F… is Vuotso?’ : heritage of Second World War forced movement and destruction in a Sámi reindeer herding community in Finnish Lapland

2017

In this paper we discuss the heritage of the WWII evacuation and the so-called ‘burning of Lapland’ within a Sámi reindeer herding community, and assess how these wartime experiences have moulded, and continue to mould, the ways people memorialise and engage with the WWII material remains. Our focus is on the village of Vuotso, which is home to the southernmost Sámi community in Finland. The Nazi German troops established a large military base there in 1941, and the Germans and the villagers lived as close neighbours for several years. In 1944 the villagers were evacuated before the outbreak of the Finno-German ‘Lapland War’ of 1944–1945, in which the German troops annihilated their militar…

From Herder to Strecker: Birth and Developments of the Anthropological Notion of Culture in Germany

2023

Austrian and German anthropological traditions are considered in view of the influence they had on global anthropology. The chapter is built around the centrality of the anthropological notion of culture and cultural dynamics. The particularistic and relativist notion of culture is in fact believed to have emerged from Germany from the eighteenth century, where intellectuals have juxtaposed the term Kultur to Zivilisation. Within German anthropology, universalistic perspectives on culture have continued through the nineteenth century, as in the evolutionary approach of Gustav Klemm and Johann Jakob Bachofen. A different form of cultural universalism was introduced by Adolf Bastian with his …

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius as causative agent of dairy cow mastitis.

2013

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a coagulase-positive specie similar to Staphylococcus intermedius , frequently associated with pyoderma, otitis and urinary tract infections of dogs and cats (van Duijkeren and others 2011). No information about bovine mastitis caused by S pseudintermedius is available in the literature. Antimicrobial resistance among S pseudintermedius strains is increasing: in the past, susceptibility to most antibiotics was common (Bond and Loeffler 2012), but in the last few years methicillin-resistant S pseudintermedius (MRSP) strains have emerged as a significant animal health problem in veterinary medicine (Schwarz and others 2008, van Duijkeren and others 2008, Wee…

Ms. 930a, Nr. 12, Bl. 31r-34v Johannes Daniel Falk. Brief an Garlieb H. Merkel, Weimar, den 3. December 179[8?] Autora rokraksts / Autograph, vācu val. / Deutsch [8] lpp.

2009

Published by Herder in 1781, the short study "Liebe und Selbstheit" represents one of the most significant moments of the reception of the works of Hemsterhuis in Germany, and is, at the same time, one of the most advanced points of arrival of the aesthetic and physiological thought of its author.

Do Carbon Traders Behave as a Herd?

2017

Abstract This paper shows the existence of herding behavior in the European Carbon Futures Market and studies its possible causes and consequences. This market is characterized by leading the carbon price discovery process and by being highly dominated by professional traders. Both features make it an appropriate environment for the existence of herding. A patterns analysis indicates that the herding level increases in speculative periods, on those days on which the price and size clustering effect is stronger, and with the arrival of carbon-related news. Regarding possible market drivers, we find that herding behavior is positively related with the number of trades, the intraday volatility…

Interest Rate Sensitivity of Spanish Industries: A Quantile Regression Approach

2015

This paper examines the degree of interest rate exposure of Spanish industries for the period 1993–2012 using the quantile regression methodology. The empirical results show that the Spanish stock market exhibits a significant level of interest rate sensitivity, although there are notable differences across industries and over time. In addition, the impact of changes in interest rates on industry equity returns tends to be more pronounced in extreme market conditions, i.e. during crises or bubbles in stock markets, than in normal periods. This finding may be related to herding behavior of stock investors during periods of market stress.
