Conservation of the endangered Mediterranean tortoise Testudo hermanni hermanni: The contribution of population genetics and historical demography
2016
International audience; Estimating the genetic variation and demographic trends of species in decline is of major concern in conservation genetics. This study contributes to understanding how historical and anthropogenic factors shape the distribution of current genetic diversity in one of the most endangered reptiles in Western Europe, the Hermann's tortoise Testudo hermanni hermanni. We used 17 microsatellite loci, chosen from a pyrosequencing library specifically developed for the subspecies to genotype eight populations distributed over about 30 sample localities covering almost the entire geographic distribution of the sub-species. The population genetic results reflect a very strong g…
Analysis of movement patterns and macrohabitat use in Hermann’s tortoises (Testudo hermanni hermanni, Gmelin 1789) reintroduced in a coastal area dom…
2016
The Hermann’s tortoise is a strictly European species found mostly in areas with Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean climes and, especially the subspecies T. hermanni hermanni, has to deal with various threats which reduced its geographic distribution to only a few isolated populations. Thus, with the objective of recovering natural populations of the species, numerous reintroduction projects are being carried out throughout its historical and prehistorical geographic distribution. The aim of our study is to evaluate the success of the T. hermanni reintroduction project carried out in the Albufera de Valencia Natural Park since 2011, through the analysis of movements, home range sizes and h…
The Quaternary fossil record of the genus Testudo in the Iberian Peninsula. Archaeological implications and diachronic distribution in the western Me…
2009
This paper explores the presence of tortoise remains and its meaning in Palaeolithic archaeological contexts. We focus on two topics: (1) the presence or absence of the genus Testudo from the Early Pleistocene to the Holocene in SW Europe; and (2) the relationship between Testudo and the palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental conditions diachronically. In order to address this objective, we collected published and unpublished data from different sites on the eastern Iberian Peninsula. The results obtained by this study demonstrate that Testudo hermanni was the only tortoise present in this area until recent times and its presence in archaeological sites is almost always related to anthropic…
Current Status of and Threats to Sicilian Turtles
2022
Based on the critical review of the literature published in the last 22 years, an attempt was made to evaluate the current knowledge gap on the distribution and status of the native Testudines taxa occurring in Sicily (namely Caretta caretta, Emys trinacris, and Testudo hermanni hermanni), as well as the available knowledge of the only non-native species with putative viable populations occurring on the island, i.e., Trachemys scripta. Summarizing the current information, all of the Testudines species occurring in Sicily showed a fragmented and incompletely-known distribution, and only scarce data are available about their phenology. Moreover, despite their inclusion of international and na…
Pasaules spogulis
1599
Teoloģiski, filozofiski ētisks un vēsturisks traktāts, viens no apjomīgākajiem N. Molllīna iespieddarbiem. Izdots arī latīņu valodā (1588, 1599). Vācu valodas izdevums dāvāts Livonijas karavadonim dažādu valstu karadienestā Georgam Fārensbaham (1551-1602), Cēsu pirmajam vaivadam no 1598. gada līdz 1602. gadam, kad krita karā pret zviedriem aplencot Vīlandes pili. Grāmatas titullapu ietver ornamentāla aproce ar dažādām fantastiskām būtnēm, grifiem, jūras vāravām utml. Ievadā publicēta Dāvida Hilhena vēstule Georgam Cīgleram. Tad seko Dāniela Hermaņa sacerētais Georga Fārensbaha dzīves apraksts. Šis G. Cīglera darbs ir vienīgais Mollīna iespieddarbs, kas guvis plašāku ievērību ārpus Livonijas…
Hermann weyl, the reluctant revolutionary
2003
“Brouwer – that is the revolution!” – with these words from his manifesto “On the New Foundations Crisis in Mathematics” (Weyl 1921) Hermann Weyl jumped headlong into ongoing debates concerning the foundations of set theory and analysis. His decision to do so was not taken lightly, knowing that this dramatic gesture was bound to have immense repercussions not only for him, but for many others within the fragile and politically fragmented European mathematical community. Weyl felt sure that modern mathematics was going to undergo massive changes in the near future. By proclaiming a “new” foundations crisis, he implicitly acknowledged that revolutions had transformed mathematics in the past, …

Primi risultati di un progetto di restocking di Testuggine
2013
First results of a restocking project for Testudo hermanni in a protected area in northwestern Sicily. A restocking project was carried out in the Zingaro Natural Reserve in order to counteract the Sicilian population decrease of Testudo hermanni. 50 tortoises coming from regional wildlife rescue centers were released after an acclimatization period in a controlled fence. 11 tortoises have been provided with radio-transmitters to follow the dispersal process and to monitoring the project progress. The obtained results have permitted to assess the useful area for the dispersion during the first year from the release and have showed the successful integration of the rescued tortoises with the…
First report of a wild hypomelanistic Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni) in Sicily (Italy)

We report the first observation of a wild hypomelanistic Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni) in Sicily (Italy)
AcouMotion – An Interactive Sonification System for Acoustic Motion Control
2006
This paper introduces AcouMotion as a new hard-/software system for combining human body motion, tangible interfaces and sonification to a closed-loop human computer interface that allows non-visual motor control by using sonification (non-speech auditory displays) as major feedback channel. AcouMotion's main components are (i) a sensor device for measuring motion parameters (ii) a computer simulation to represent the dynamical evolution of a model world, and (iii) a sonification engine which generates an auditory representation of objects and any interactions in the model world. The intended applications of AcouMotion range from new kinds of sport games that can be played without visual di…
