Between constitution and interpretation: Identity as history

2015

The paper focuses on the possibilities to constitute meaning in the „borderline- situations“ (Jaspers) of the social sphere, such as the loss of validity of orientation within and experience of reality in the socially shared structures of the lifeworld. On the one hand, I will refer to A. Schutz’ and his constitution-analysis of foreign understanding and of shared meaning; on the other hand, I bear onto I. Kertesz literary project to narrate the biography of an Auschwitz-survivor as close to his experiential perspective as possible. I will focus both on the concept of constitution and of interpretation with respect to their enabling of the transcending of a typologized everyday’s world whic…

The Hermeneutics of Texts

2002

The second canon is the canon of the whole and the parts and implies the hermeneutical circle between the whole and the parts: understanding the whole presupposes understanding the parts and vice versa. The task of this essay is not to solve the methodological difficulties of the practical application of the canon to texts and their contexts. Such a solution would require a complicated and lengthy investigation of the different aspects of the application of the canon to the methodology of philological text interpretation and historical research concerning the original contexts of texts. A brief sketch of one simple aspect of the application of the second canon will be given in the last sect…

The Clip Approach : A Visual Methodology to Support the (Re)Construction of Life Narratives

2021

Major life changes may cause an autobiographical rupture and a need to work on one’s narrative identity. This article introduces a new qualitative interview methodology originally developed to facilitate 10 prostate cancer patients and five spouses in the (re)creation of their life narratives in the context of a series of interventive interviews conducted over a timespan of several months. In “The Clip Approach” the interviewees’ words, phrases, and metaphors are reflected back in a physical form (“the Clips”) as visual artifacts that allow the interviewees to re-enter and re-consider their experience and life and re-construct their narratives concerning them. Honoring the interviewees as …

Being hospitalized with a newly diagnosed chronic illness - A phenomenological study of children’s lifeworld in the hospital

2012

The impact of a hospital environment on children has rarely been investigated. Recently, however, the perspective of hospitalized children has been taken into account. Being hospitalized and facing an illness represent a dramatic change in a child’s daily life, and the quality of the environment may influence the child’s experiences. The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of children being hospitalized with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes and to obtain an increased understanding of the environmental influences on the children’s lifeworld. The study used a hermeneutic phenomenological approach. The design is a combination of observation of the participant, interviews, and p…

‘Sometimes it feels as if the world goes on without me’: adolescents' experiences of living with chronic fatigue syndrome

2013

Aims and objectives To explore the experience of being an adolescent with chronic fatigue syndrome. Background Despite ample research, chronic fatigue syndrome is still poorly understood, and there are still controversies related to the illness. Adolescents with chronic fatigue syndrome are often unable to attend school and lose social relations with friends. The challenges they face will affect their quality of life. Hell on earth: Textual reflections on the experience of mental illness

2012

Background: Some people who by themselves or by others are understood as having mental health problems have written autobiographies about their experiences. Aims: The aim of this study is to explore how people write about their experiences of being mentally ill. Method: Twelve Scandinavian autobiographies were studied using content analysis based on phenomenology and hermeneutics. Results: Three themes were identified: feeling like a stranger in life and places, the transformation of life experiences into questions of disease and feeling ashamed. Conclusions: People’s experiences of being mentally ill might be understood as the result of medical constructions unsuitable for the persons them…

From the Ultimate God to the Virtual God: Post-Ontotheological Perspectives on the Divine in Heidegger, Badiou, and Meillassoux

2014

The Heideggerian account of the ontotheological constitution of Western metaphysics has been extremely influential for contemporary philosophy of religion and for philosophical perspectives on theology and the divine. This paper introduces and contrasts two central strategies for approaching the question of the divine in a non- or post-ontotheological manner. The first and more established approach is that of post-Heideggerian hermeneutics and deconstruction, inspired by Heidegger’s suggestion of a “theology without the word ‘being’” and by his later notions of an “ultimate god” and of “divinities” as one of the four axes of the fourfold (Geviert). Here, the divine is no longer articulated …

Reformations of Metaphysics? Historical and Critical Remarks

2016

A historical survey on the concept of "overcoming of metaphysics" as stated in both philosophies which lie at the core of the so-called "great divide" between analytical and continental philosophy: Heidegger's and Carnap's. The essay shows how their legacy deeply influenced the later course of criticism to epistemic claim of metaphysics from an unitary point of view.
