The order Herpesvirales includes viruses that infect aquatic and terrestrial vertebrates and several aquatic invertebrates (i.e. mollusks), and share the commonality of possessing a double-stranded DNA core surrounded by an icosahedral capsid. Herpesviruses of the family Alloherpesviridae that infect fish and amphibians, including channel catfish virus and koi herpes - virus, negatively impact aquaculture. Here, we describe a novel herpesvirus infection of wild European perch from lakes in Finland. Myeloid Cells Restrict MCMV and Drive Stress- Induced Extramedullary Hematopoiesis through STAT1

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) has a high prevalence worldwide, is often fatal for immunocompromised patients, and causes bone marrow suppression. Deficiency of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) results in severely impaired antiviral immunity. We have used cell- type restricted deletion of Stat1 to determine the importance of myeloid cell activity for the defense against murine CMV (MCMV). We show that myeloid STAT1 limits MCMV burden and infection- associated pathology in the spleen but does not affect ultimate clearance of infection. The Mouse Cytomegalovirus Gene m42 Targets Surface Expression of the Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase CD45 in Infected Macrophages

The receptor-like protein tyrosine phosphatase CD45 is expressed on the surface of cells of hematopoietic origin and has a pivotal role for the function of these cells in the immune response. Here we report that following infection of macrophages with mouse cytomegalovirus (MCMV) the cell surface expression of CD45 is drastically diminished. Screening of a set of MCMV deletion mutants allowed us to identify the viral gene m42 of being responsible for CD45 down-modulation. Chronic intestinal inflammation in mice expressing viral Flip in epithelial cells

Viruses are present in the intestinal microflora and are currently discussed as a potential causative mechanism for the development of inflammatory bowel disease. A number of viruses, such as Human Herpesvirus-8, express homologs to cellular FLIPs, which are major contributors for the regulation of epithelial cell death. In this study we analyzed the consequences of constitutive expression of HHV8-viral FLIP in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) in mice. A recent success story in this context was artemisinin, which is not only active against malaria but also to other diseases. This raised the interest of artemisinin's potential for drug repurposing.
