Content of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls in fish from Latvian lakes

Seventeen polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/PCDFs) of the highest priority as well as twelve dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) were analyzed in the muscle tissues of the following freshwater fish species sampled from eleven Latvian freshwater lakes: perch (Perca flavescens), carp (Cyprinus carpio), eel (Anguilla rostrata), bream (Abramis brama), chub (Leuciscus cephalus), pike (Esox lucius), sheatfish (Silurus glanis) and roach (Rutilus). Crystal structure of N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)phenylalanyldehydroalanine isopropyl ester (Boc–Phe–ΔAla–OiPr)

In the crystal structure of the de­hydro­dipeptide (Boc-Phe-ΔAla-OiPr), the mol­ecule has a trans configuration of the N-methyl­amide group. Its geometry is different from saturated peptides but is in excellent agreement with other de­hydro­alanine compounds. In the crystal, an N—H⋯O hydrogen bond links the mol­ecules in a herringbone packing arrangement.

QUESTION Investigation of the predictive value of the Catterall- as compared to the Herring-classification in patients with Perthes disease. METHOD A radiological follow-up study including 53 patients with a total of 59 affected hips was carried out. In the initial diagnosis the Catterall-, Waldenstrom- and Herring-stages were assessed. Root topology and allocation patterns of Atriplex patula supplied with different nutrient concentrations

To test whether sub-optimal available nutrient concentrations would result in a more herringbone root branching pattern, in lower root diameters, and in greater resource allocation to root growth than to above-ground portions, seedlings of Atriplex patula were grown under optimal (full), intermediate (1/3 full), and low (1/6 full) nutrient treatments. No significant differences were found between the full and 1/3 nutrient treatments for any of the parameters tested. Root topologies did not show conclusive responses to nutrient availability, however roots treated with 1/6 nutrient concentration showed the tendency to grow in a more herringbone pattern. High dietary inclusion level of fresh herring impairs growth of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss

Abstract One-year old rainbow trout (initially 350–670 g) were fed for 15 weeks diets containing various amounts of water (23–67%). This was achieved by replacing fish meal with Baltic herring. The growth of rainbow trout, whether measured as wet weight, protein or energy, was impaired when 50–55% dietary water was fed. The fish compensated for increasing dietary water content by consuming more diet so that the dry matter intake of the diets with 23 and 67% water were equal. Partitioning of growth into protein and lipid as well as protein and energy retention efficiencies were unaffected by dietary water. Effects of feeding frequency on growth and food utilisation of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed low-fat herring or dry pellets

Abstract One-year-old rainbow trout (weight range 400–700 g) were fed for 18 weeks on low-fat herring or commercial dry pellets 1, 2 or 4 times in a day. Quadratic regression analysis indicated that at least three feedings were required for maximum growth and that fish fed a dry diet could benefit from even more frequent feeding. The proportion of lipid in growth increased with increased number of feedings, but the protein content was not affected (mean 18.6% protein wet basis). Food consumption (dry weight) was affected in a similar manner for both diets and its maximum occurred at slightly higher frequency than for maximum growth. The probability for the oil accident to occur at the Gulf of Finland has been increasing last ten years and it is predicted to continue so. The risk is high based on the accident probability and the probable harm caused; some spawning areas of the Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras) are located in the vicinity of ports and ship fairways with heavy traffic, so any oil spillage there could affect recruitment of this commercially important species. Signs of impaired thiamine (vitamin B1) status in feeding-migrating Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were studied in three Baltic Sea areas, which differ in the proportion and nutritional composition of prey fish sprat (Sprattus sprattus) and herring (Clupea harengus).
