Hopf bifurcation at infinity for planar vector fields

2007

We study, from a new point of view, families of planar vector fields without singularities $ \{ X_{\mu}$  &nbsp:&nbsp  $-\varepsilon < \mu < \varepsilon\} $ defined on the complement of an open ball centered at the origin such that, at $\mu=0$, infinity changes from repellor to attractor, or vice versa. We also study a sort of local stability of some $C^1$ planar vector fields around infinity.

Two-photon laser dynamics.

1995

Degenerate as well as nondegenerate three-level two-photon laser (TPL) models are derived. In the limit of equal cavity losses for both fields, it is shown that the nondegenerate model reduces to the degenerate one. We also demonstrate the isomorphism existing between our degenerate TPL model and that of a dressed-state TPL. All these models contain ac-Stark and population-induced shifts at difference from effective Hamiltonian models. The influence of the parameters that control these shifts on the nonlinear dynamics of a TPL is investigated. In particular, the stability of the periodic orbits that arise at the Hopf bifurcation of the system and the extension of the self-pulsing domains of…

Cooperation ‐ the form of sustainable tourism industry in Latvia / Bendradarbiavimas – darnaus Latvijos turizmo forma

2008

This paper draws attention to building networking and partnership amongst the market players of tourism industry in Latvia. The authors define cooperation as a process, which manifests in all fields of business operations, e.g. it occurs when two or more parties (enterprises) have business objectives which are mutually dependent. There are many ways and forms of cooperation that are of choice for every entrepreneur – formal and informal, vertical and horizontal, centralised and decentralised and others; it is just needed to evaluate all the benefits and contributions when to choose to compete and when to cooperate. Temperature-dependent polymorphism of N-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,5-dimethyl-1H-imidazole-4-carboxamide 3-oxide: experimental and theoretical studies on int…

2014

X-ray analysis of N-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,5-dimethyl-1H-imidazole-4-carboxamide 3-oxide reveals the temperature-dependent polymorphism associated with the crystallographic symmetry conversion. The observed crystal structure transformation corresponds to a symmetry reduction from I41 /a (I) to P43 (II) space groups. The phase transition mainly concerns the subtle but clearly noticeable reorganization of molecules in the crystal space, with the structure of individual molecules left almost unchanged. The Hirshfeld surface analysis shows that various intermolecular contacts play an important role in the crystal packing, revealing graphically the differences in spatial arrangements of the molecule…

Spatial and temporal patterns of throughfall quantity and quality in a tropical montane forest in Ecuador

2007

Summary In forests, complex canopy processes control the change in volume and chemical composition of rain water. We hypothesize that (i) spatial patterns, (ii) the temporal stability of spatial patterns, and (iii) the temporal course of solute concentrations can be used to explore these processes. The study area at 1950 m above sea level in the south Ecuadorian Andes is far away from anthropogenic emission sources and marine influences. It received ca. 2200 mm of rain annually. We collected rain and throughfall on an event and within-event basis for five precipitation periods between August and October 2005 at up to 25 sites and analyzed the samples for pH and concentrations of K, Na, Ca, …

Estimation of winter leaf area index and sky view fraction for snow modelling in boreal coniferous forests: consequences on snow mass and energy bala…

2012

Abstract in Undetermined Leaf area index (LAI) and canopy coverage are important parameters when modelling snow process in coniferous forests, controlling interception and transmitting radiation. Estimates of LAI and sky view factor show large variability depending on the estimation method used, and it is not clear how this is reflected in the calculated snow processes beneath the canopy. In this study, the winter LAI and sky view fraction were estimated using different optical and biomass-based approximations in several boreal coniferous forest stands in Fennoscandia with different stand density, age and site latitude. The biomass-based estimate of LAI derived from forest inventory data wa…

Response of water and nutrient fluxes to improvement fellings in a tropical montane forest in Ecuador

2009

Abstract Management of natural forests might be one option to reduce the high deforestation rate in Ecuador. We therefore evaluated the response of water and nutrient cycles in a natural tropical montane forest to improvement fellings with the aim of favoring economically valuable target trees which will later be harvested with additional ecosystem impacts not considered here. The study was conducted at ca. 1900–2200 m above sea level in the south Ecuadorian Andes on the east-exposed slope of the east cordillera. In June 2004, one of two paired ca. 10-ha large catchments was thinned by felling 10.2% of the initial basal area (dbh ≥ 10 cm) on 30% of the catchment. The stems remained in situ.…

Water budgets of three small catchments under montane forest in Ecuador: experimental and modelling approach

2006

The water budget of forested catchments controls the local water supply and influences the regional climate. To assess the anthropogenic impact on the water cycle, we constructed a water budget for three ∼10 ha catchments under lower montane forest on the east-facing slope of the Andes in south Ecuador at 1900–2150 m elevation. We used field hydrological measurements and modelled surface flows with TOPMODEL, a semi-distributed catchment model. We measured incident precipitation, throughfall, stemflow, and surface flow between May 1998 and April 2002 in hourly to weekly resolution, and determined all variables needed to parameterise TOPMODEL. On average, of the four monitored years and three…

Hyperhomocysteinemia and Cardiovascular Risk: Effect of Vitamin Supplementation in Risk Reduction

2010

Abstract Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing aminoacid produced during metabolism of methionine. Since 1969 the relationship between altered homocysteine metabolism and both coronary and peripheral atherotrombosis has been known; in recent years experimental evidences have shown that elevated plasma levels of homocysteine are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular ischemic events. Several mechanisms by which elevated homocysteine impairs vascular function have been proposed, including impairment of endothelial function, production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and consequent oxidation of low-density lipids. Folic acid and B vitamins, required for remethyl…
