COVID-19 Crisis - A Test for European Union’s Solidarity
2020
Abstract The crises the European Union has gone through over time have called into question the Union’s legitimacy and efficiency. The 2008-2009 financial crisis, the European debt crisis, the migration crisis and Brexit, have all tested the solidarity between member states. The COVID-19 pandemic is without a doubt the most drastic crisis in the EU’s history, with very severe socioeconomic consequences. The EU leaders were strongly criticized for not reacting quickly and efficiently enough to mitigate the impact of the virus, reduce suffering, and ward off the economic crisis. In this context, the questions that arise are: Is the Union a modern-day Titanic? Will it sink or it will sustain i…
Expert In-depth Interview on Development and Efficiency of “RIGA International Airport” Reflecting Factors
2016
Abstract The aim of the paper is to identify development ways and effectiveness of RIGA International Airport. Theoretical evidence was examined and expert in-depth interview was carried out to explore the main circumstances affecting RIGA International Airport functioning. Findings of the study show that there are positive tendencies in the field of airport efficiency and development, but improvement is needed primarily for coordinating visions and resources managed by both state and airport administration bodies.
Estimating the Demand for New Destinations for a Regional Airport Based on Its Catchment Area
2020
Abstract Estimating accurately demand both at market and company level for specific goods and services can be considered a necessity for every organization. Traditional demand estimation methods may not be relevant for estimating the demand for new destinations to be introduced by a regional airport. The present paper proposes to fill this gap and to develop the demand estimation literature by presenting a novel demand estimation method. Two research objectives are developed in this regard: (1) determining the catchment area of Sibiu International Airport (a regional airport in Romania) for destinations operated by competitor airports and not by Sibiu International Airport and (2) estimatin…
Response of total and nitrate-dissimilating bacteria to reduced N deposition in a spruce forest soil profile
2009
A field-scale manipulation experiment conducted for 16 years in a Norway spruce forest at Solling, Central Germany, was used to follow the long-term response of total soil bacteria, nitrate reducers and denitrifiers under conditions of reduced N deposition. N was experimentally removed from throughfall by a roof construction (‘clean rain plot’). We used substrate-induced respiration (SIR) to characterize the active fraction of soil microbial biomass and potential nitrate reduction to quantify the activity of nitrate reducers. The abundance of total bacteria, nitrate reducers and denitrifiers in different soil layers was analysed by quantitative PCR of 16S rRNA gene, nitrate reduction and de…
Historical biogeography of Melastomataceae: the roles of Tertiary migration and long-distance dispersal
2001
Melastomataceae and Memecylaceae are pantropically distributed sister groups for which an ndhF gene phylogeny for 91 species in 59 genera is here linked with Eurasian and North American fossils in a molecular clock approach to biogeographical reconstruction. Nine species from the eight next-closest families are used to root phylogenetic trees obtained under maximum likelihood criteria. Melastomataceae comprise â¼3000 species in the neotropics, â¼1000 in tropical Asia, 240 in Africa, and 225 in Madagascar in 150-166 genera, and the taxa sampled come from throughout this geographic range. Based on fossils, ranges of closest relatives, tree topology, and calibrated molecular divergences, Mel…
Clinical utility of HFABP in myocardial infarction
2018
Assessing chest pain patients presenting to the emergency area (EA) is still a clinical challenge, as acute myocardial infarction (AMI) diagnosis is not adjudicated in the majority of patients. New generation high sensitivity troponin assays (hs-cTn) still present some limitations, thus, novel biomarkers to early rule-in and rule- out myocardial infarction in chest pain patients presenting to the EA are sought after. Among all, heart- type fatty acid binding protein (h-FABP) has been largely investigated. Studies performed on HFABP in these patients present marked heterogeneity. However, it can be stated that HFABP is clearly not a reliable marker for AMI diagnosis, neither as a stand-alone…
Machine learning of microbial interactions using abductive ILP and hypothesis frequency/compression estimation
2021
Interaction between species in microbial communities plays an important role in the functioning of all ecosystems, from cropland soils to human gut microbiota. Many statistical approaches have been proposed to infer these interactions from microbial abundance information. However, these statistical approaches have no general mechanisms for incorporating existing ecological knowledge in the inference process. We propose an Abductive/Inductive Logic Programming (A/ILP) framework to infer microbial interactions from microbial abundance data, by including logical descriptions of different types of interaction as background knowledge in the learning. This framework also includes a new mechanism …
The importance of the moss layer in sustaining biological diversity of Gamasina mites in coniferous forest soil
2008
Summary The feather moss layer of boreal coniferous forests is known to buffer the underlying soil temperature and to be a major component in the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles by efficient scavenging of nutrients from throughfall and direct precipitation. Through indirect or direct effects the feather moss layer may also play a significant role in forming soil organism communities. In this 4-year experimental field study, the predatory Gamasina mite diversity was estimated in plots where the feather moss layer was removed or disturbed by turning over, in relation to that in control plots. Species richness, Shannon's diversity and equitability in spring but not autumn were decreased when th…
DISTRIBUIÇÃO DE CUSTOS: UM ESTUDO NO PORTO DE VALÊNCIA
2016
