THE ROLE OF ACCOUNTABILITY WITHIN A ZERO WASTE STRATEGY: EVIDENCES FROM A SICILIAN SMALL MUNICIPALITY
2017
Building a sustainable city model comprising an integrated waste management system has become an indispensable choice, also in the light of increasingly stringent regulatory constraints. The core point of the paper is the implementation of a zero waste strategy in a small municipality in Sicily. Given that only the unceasing participation of citizens may ensure the persistence over time of such a policy, accountability process works letting citizens approach directly the end-results of their ongoing good practices. By building up a SD model framed by a DPM chart, it is possible to figure out how disclosure of public saving resulting from the decreasing amount of waste piled up in the landfi…
Co-determination and Merger Incentives from Transfers of Wealth: Firm Owners vs. Workers
2010
When workers can capture rents from their influence on corporate decisions, mergers can become a device to generate transfers of wealth. This paper examines the merger incentives from these transfers of wealth. It is found that worker influence increases merger profitability, in line with the owners’ incentive to use mergers to reduce the rents captured by workers. In contrast, the workers’ merger incentives are shown to be decreasing in their own degree of influence on the merger decision, in line with the view according to which workers can be used by incumbent managers as a defensive instrument in acquisitions.
Evolution's cycles of global social systems and the basic mechanisms behind the crisis. The times in which we live. What has changed where are we hea…
2011
Šajā darbā tiek apskatīta viena no 20. gadsimta svarīgākajām paradigmām – pašorganizācija globālu sociāli-ekonomisku sistēmu evolūcijas kontekstā.
LA CALIFICACIÓN DE LOS ESTABLECIMIENTOS PERMANENTES EN LAS OPERACIONES INTRACOMUNITARIAS: LAS TRANSFERENCIAS DE BIENES, LAS VENTAS DE BIENES EN CONSI…
2021
Modelling Geohistorical Accessibility in the Long Run: the Growth of the Waterway's Network
2022
Historical GIS are common tools used in social sciences. They allow to inventory spatial objects over time and to make space a real determinant in the analysis in the long run. Often the projects are focusing on the collect and we aim here to focus on data analysis. The succession of transportation networks is the way to revive economic geography through spatially linked population and occupational data. In the long run it consists of empirical analyses to assess the role of geohistorical accessibility in the local development. Our research project aims to offer a multimodal analysis since the 19th century to question the regional development in France face to the growth of transportation n…

Do different models induce changes in mortality indicators? That is a key question for extending the Lee-Carter model
2021
[EN] The parametric model introduced by Lee and Carter in 1992 for modeling mortality rates in the USA was a seminal development in forecasting life expectancies and has been widely used since then. Different extensions of this model, using different hypotheses about the data, constraints on the parameters, and appropriate methods have led to improvements in the model's fit to historical data and the model's forecasting of the future. This paper's main objective is to evaluate if differences between models are reflected in different mortality indicators' forecasts. To this end, nine sets of indicator predictions were generated by crossing three models and three block-bootstrap samples with …
Distribution and air-sea exchange of mercury (Hg) in polluted marine environments
2012
Mercury (Hg) is emitted in the atmosphere by anthropogenic and natural sources, these last accounting for one third of the total emissions. Since the pre-industrial age, the atmospheric deposition of mercury have increased notably, while ocean emissions have doubled owing to the re-emission of anthropogenic mercury. Exchange between the atmosphere and ocean plays an important role in cycling and transport of mercury. We present the preliminary results from a study on the distribution and evasion flux of mercury at the atmosphere/sea interface in the Augusta basin (SE Sicily, southern Italy), a semi-enclosed marine area affected by a high degree of contamination (heavy metals and PHA) due to…
A new geochemical approach to estimate the distribution of air pollutants from natural and anthropogenic sources: examples from Solfatara Crater (Cam…
2015
Volcanic and geothermal systems significantly contribute to the input of volatile contaminants, such as mercury and hydrogen sulfide, into the atmosphere. Mercury has a strong environmental impact. In the atmosphere the prevalent elemental form is Hg0 (~98 %), whose main physical-chemical features are: high volatility, low solubility and chemical inertness. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), one of the most abundant gas compounds in volcanic fluids, is highly poisoning and corrosive and unpleasantly smells of rotten eggs. Measurements of Hg0 and H2S concentrations in air are commonly performed by means of passive samplers. However, real-time measurements, coupled with monitoring of local atmospheric c…
